While writing the script for the #Myanmar episode I realized there just wouldn't be enough time to fit this very important section of delicate information in the video (unless I rushed or glossed over it) however it definitely needed to be addressed, therefore I had to make an entire separate video for it; The Rohingya situation. There are many other pieces of information that could've been mentioned in this video but for what it's worth I talked to quite a few people on this matter, did research and this is the briefest yet concise summary I can give.

You could probably have mentioned that there are UN reports that document actual attempts at ethnic cleansing by the Myanmar army. It's not just a 'both sides' thing, there are third-party international observers, you should try to at least mentioned what those have to say as well...

Actually, many small ethnic groups live on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. There are 1.5 million Burmese Buddhists living in Chittagong and Cox's bazar in Bangladesh. Bangladesh never deprives them of their rights. In the same way that Myanmar has deprived the Rohingyas of their citizenship, Bangladesh and those who want to live in Bangladesh, can deprive these Buddhist communities of their citizenship. But one secular government after another has come to power in Bangladesh and is not doing so

@@zobaerhossainrobin46 Because the Buddhist community living in Bangladesh has solid proofs its their land. The Rohingya people has no solid proof they came to Myanmar being an arab tradder. Also all the Rohingya speaks in Chittagongian language which is a Bengali language which is enough to prove them they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. On the other hand, the Buddhists in Bangladesh living in Chittagong and Cox bazar had their own kingdom and proof of claiming those area. Check the Arakan Kingdom if u didnt knew it existed.

I spent all of November in Myanmar. Traveled from Yangon to Nay Pi Taw, Mandalay, then off to smaller more rural areas like Shwebo, Kale, Kanbalu, Tedim, Falam, and Rihkawdar. I have to say it is a very interesting country. I found while there while most everyone was very open about talking about the government and democracy, no one wanted to talk about the Rohingya at all. And you are 100% correct about it not being about them being Muslim. I traveled the entire month with a Myanmar native that was Muslim and a colleague from out of the country that was also Muslim and everywhere we went the people were for the most part incredibly friendly.

It's true. I used to enthusiastic to answer questions about Rohingya for my friends from other countries. Then, I started not to because I don't want to get the look of distrust and disgust as if I'm lying to them just because what I'm saying is not like what mass media is reporting. What I want them to know is that I care deeply about people no matter what their race is and I was just explaining the misrepresentation of Muslims vs Buddhists in the news. SMH.

Wow! Never watched a video about Rohingya tackling BOTH sides of the story! A salute you! You researched both sides. But yes, people should not suffer. My country (Philippines) accepted 8000 of them. ( I think more).We can accept more but I think Rohingya likes Indonesia, since it is a Muslim country. Note: The Philippines is just a foothold for the refugees. We usually send them to countries that they like like US and the EU, or back to their country if things was solved. Rohingyans stayed for just 5 months in our country. We were the first Southeast asians bordering the South China to accept them We accepted Vietnamese before. After peace was acheive in Vietnam in the 70's, it is time for yhe refugees to return. But they did not want to leave unfortunately. Vietnamese people crying since they loved it in our country.

Yeah.. at the beginning they chose Indonesia, since We (read: most of Muslim in Indonesia) love to take care our fellow muslim abroad. Do you hear Pakistan? They are supported by Indonesia for a very long time. They got de jure from us. There are no news about Rohingya lately, but last thing I heared from national media: "They are not comfortable in the refugee camp because it isn't the same as what they are promised." They got baptized (so Christian word, can't find the Islamic word) by our culture: You cam hold my promise because promise is free! Simply because they are a burden in financial, with no benefit at all. Which country want to accept this kind of immigrant? 1. No money 2. No education 3. No skill Do not mention their language is very different from us, maybe most of Indonesian who helped them can speak Arabic. But most of Indonesian, even most of Muslim in Indonesia can't speak Arabic. To be understand: Many Muslim in Indonesia can speak Arabic because they learn to resd their holy book. But they can't make a conversation. It is more like they are remembering the verse like a song. Thr higher the education, more of them can take a very basic conversation.

I’m Thai and I can say that many conflicts in Southeast Asia, including this one, are the result of Western colonization. British and French just left many problems behind this region without any responsibility. They combined and divided their conquered territories like a cake without thinking about ethnic background and former political status. Shan people, for example, are still fighting against the Bamars for their independence until today. I’m pro-Shan because Shan state (Tailand) has ever been an independent state not part of Burma. The language Rohingya’s speak is a sub-branch of the Chittagonian language in Bangladesh, which is related to Bengali. The word Rohingya is derived from the Bengali corruption of the word “Rohang”. “Roshang” and “Roan” which refers to Rakhine (Arakan). This is in the Bengali and British colonial historical administrative records. Everyone in Myanmar never called Rohingya’s by that name, they have always referred to them as Bengali’s. Most of the population have never heard that name until recently when all this made international headlines. It is unacceptable that they are lying about their bengali roots. From the British rule of Myanmar from 1824 to 1948, not a single reference to ‘Rohingya’ is to be found in any British official report, regional gazetteer, census, legislation, private correspondence or personal reminiscence, including the conflicts between the Burmese and Bengali’s. There is simply no credible historical evidence that they were called Rohingyas. Also visiting European travellers, explorers who visited Arakan and the rest of the country in the 1800’s and early 1900’s who were amazed with the country had no mention of it. The term Rohingya has also never even been mentioned once in the ancient history of Arakan State and the Rakhine (Arakan) people going back 500 BC when Buddha visited Arakan State. That’s why the Arakanese people and Burmese cannot accept that term. They are stealing the identity of the Arakanese people. There have been interfering efforts by some international nations on this Rohingya issue, without fully understanding the ethnic groups and other situations of Myanmar, it is viewed as offending the sovereignty of the nation. In February 1965 the (West) German Embassy in Karachi, reported on the visit of a General from Myanmar to Pakistan, he mentioned that there are 250,000 illegal Bengali immigrants in Arakan. By 1975 the number had risen to 400,000, according to Bangladeshi Ambassador, in conversation with the British Ambassador in Rangoon on 23 December 1975. No wonder these thousands of illegal Bengalis and their descendants currently in Arakan want to be classified as “Rohingya”.

I am Burmese and Buddhist too. I will not be biased on this case and I would like to share what I know about it . But it can’t be explained in a paragraph since the country is messed up every fields (religion, ethnics, government, education, etc) . When I said that I am Burmese, I was born in Myanmar but both of my grand fathers of my mom and dad sides came from China . So I can be considered what they call Chinese-Burmese. Burmese are indeed prejudice in ethnics and there were lots of evidence about that. Chinese were also prosecuted right before I was born. They can’t attend to the university since they are Chinese and many other stuffs which my parents told me. Regardless of what I said it is pretty different in this situation. Chinese were indeed migrated from China and not native to Burma. But they gave the citizenship to everyone who were born in Burma including me regardless of my ancestors’ identity. In this Rohingya case, what I know is that they don’t speak Burmese which is the official language of Myanmar. It’s true that many ethnics group(135 recognized groups) still don’t speak Burmese but they speak their languages where we can understand since there were proves about relationship between Burmese and other ethnic goups(Rakhine, mon, karen, Chin, etc) since before British rules. Most of the Chinese were assimilated and even my parents were born in Burma and they speak both Chinese (at home) and Burmese outside. In this situation, most of the rohingya don’t have enough evidence to prove they live in Arakan State which is native to Rakhine people(one of the major ethnic groups in Myanmar) . Second is that they started to form the army and attacked the Burmese Government where they state they want to succeed . Even though if you can give land to those people, shouldn’t Burmese government stand for Rakhine people? Where will they live? We, most of the Burmese people, allow Rohingya to leave the country if they want to escape from this conflict. Another conflict is within the government , as you know after 1988, there was a revolution and military took the role to rule the country as a reason to stop those violences. Since then, Burma was gradually destroyed . They were lots of corruption and downfall in every aspects of the country. The government controlled all of the country’s activities and right before (2015 or 2016 I think ) NLD (the Democratic Party led by Aung San Suu Kyi) won the election. But those military officers didn’t want to lose their authority so they make many problems. One of the problems is that they didn’t let Aung San Suu Kyi to be president because she is married to the UK resident. I know it is strange but that is one fact includes in the 2008 Constitution which state the president can only be married to Myanmar people and not other country’s people. This led to many problems. Aung San Suu Kyi couldn’t make herself president and she didn’t have enough authority to led the country. So, the military government is still there. Also , even though it states Burma as a democratic country, military hold 20%(I am not sure with these facts since they are complicated , but it is ~20 or 30) of the votes. For this one, not all the actions were taken by Aung San Suu Kyi. Military government still got excuses that Rohingya burnt down the villages and killed many Rakhine residents, as they involved in this case. Aung San Suu Kyi didn’t step ahead of this crisis and let go of her Nobel prize, not because she is stupid but because she knows how to handle the case. She took all the blames on herself and covered those military folks. On the other hand , she helped the Rohingya . If she let medias record this crisis, mostly the military government will revolt as a reason for saving nation and re-control the country. Therefore, she had no choice because it can led to another 1988 military control(You can find this event as a reference to my comment since it is important) . In order to remove those 20% , firstly, they have to rewrite the 2008 Constitution and give her the authority to be a president. I can question that before u know the facts what I told, didn’t you find strange why Aung San Suu Kyi wasn’t president after winning election. Still, it isn’t quite easy to rewrite the constitution and it will take time. However, I trust her not because she is a Nobel prize winner but because she is the daughter of General Aung San (nationalist who led to Burmese independence) . You can learn about General Aung San in Wikipedia or other any sources. Also, even though General Aung San got three kids, she is the only one who looks after Myanmar just like her father regardless of her own profits. One example is that she left her kids in UK and came to Myanmar but got under house arrest. Overall, whatever you guys said to me , I am willing to listen and debate and I truly believe in Aung San Suu Kyi and her personality. That’s all!

I live in the Philippines, the stories circulating around South East Asia about this issue is kind of one sided. No concrete stories have been published by anyone; others are for Rohingya others are for Burmese Government. This is the most none bias story that I have heard about this issue. Nice Barbs! I really like how you construct videos, very fair! I hope you could make a similar to this one about the West Philippine Sea issue or the 9 dash line claim of China. :D

OMG you're doing a good job, Barby! I'm Chinese Indonesians and I'm sick of many ignorant fellow Indonesians always shouted that this is Buddhist dicrimination against the moeslem (while conveniently forget about how several moeslems forbids church and so on). Rohingya crisis IS NOT a religious conflict. IT IS A RACE DISCRIMINATION and they end up with the worst goverment on earth, Myanmar military Junta (even Suu Kyi is a little helpless against them, I think). You even mention the possible oil conflict between China-India-Myanmar. I'm so glad you got many things covered in neutral positions. My personal wish for the Rohingyas? I wish the Bangladesh gov't can intergrate the Rohingya to the Bangladeshi society. You're right, Rohingya racially doesn't look like anything like Burmese people. It need time and much work, but let's just hope for the best

Most of the refugees in Texas and Indiana are. I ask what happened in there homeland that led them to come to the states, but they are very private and won’t talk about it. I would appreciate if you did a video on Chin refugees so I can have a better understanding of them. I love all your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me 💕

Thank you for explaining the whole story. I felt like a lot of western people misunderstood the situation. Bangladesh did not want to take them, we gave them refuge out of the humanity we have left in us. Bangladesh is the most densely populated country(except for the city-states) in the whole world. How is it logical that we take more people? Our economy is suffering, our relation with our neighbor Myanmar is suffering. These people have been living there way before the existence of Bangladesh. We have no similarity with them. Hopefully, the world will find a solution to this crisis.
@KG-ms3ji
@KG-ms3ji 3 жыл бұрын
how do you not have similarity with them? they are bengalis, they speak bangla, they are muslims and they share the same tradition and culture as you and they even fought secessionist war against myanmar to join you . they are basically you but without the bangladeshi nationality. i agree bangladesh shouldn't be held responsible for them and the wider world needs to find a solution but they are way more bangladeshi than they ever were burmese.
@tarchhera
@tarchhera 3 жыл бұрын
@@KG-ms3ji You obviously have very little understanding about Bangladeshis. Them being muslims, doesnt make them similar. Arabs are muslims, we do not find much similarity except for the religious practice, even there we have differences. They do not speak Bangla, their language is in the same family, but that is not bangla. Most of us (at least 80-85%) do not understand what they are saying. People of a certain region (Chittagong) understands a little. Our culture drifted on a way different paths, although they share the same root. There are Bengalis in India, and we find them quite similar to us actually. But it does not mean we must live in the same country. Whether they ever fought any war to join Bangladesh, does not mean anything to us. These people migrated in Myanmar a very long time ago, way before Bangladesh was formed. While they are still mostly uneducated, not modernizing in thoughts and living, still in the darkness, Bangladeshi people moved on. People change with the help of technology and education. We did, way more than they have. Now, these people are like Bangladeshis in 70s in thought and senses. Now that they arrived here, we can not see how we are similar. It is people like you, living somewhere else and generalizing us because they are bengali and muslims and a few other misinformation on your end. Religion and once shared culture does not make us similar. And this does not help us. These people started pillaging locals' lands, destroying forest. I am not going to talk about their relation with Myanmar, or whether they are Burmese. We do not find rohingyas to be part of us. They are here and still here, only because of moral reasons.
