I've been looking into the functions really in depth for the past few months and it's been helping me a lot with my horrible anxiety because I've been able to come to the realization of how bad I am at Se and just how heavily I rely on Ni. It kind of made me upset when I tried to talk about the MBTI to my best friend a couple months ago and he kind of just wrote it off as a gimmick initially. But I was actually just talking about the functions to him last night and he was sorry he hadn't listened at first, because he could tell it was helping me figure out my thought processes.

Got to know the functions to use your type for more than just an entertaining ego boost. I don't know if focusing on developing the inferior function is good advice though. According to personality hacker logic, I would say, learn to keep your inferior function happy without indulging in it and focus on developing your auxiliary function to keep you out of that depressing Ni-Ti, or other, loop.
@FrankJames6 жыл бұрын
Well developing the inferior function is all about balancing your life out. Meaning you are imbalanced heavily in favor of your dominant function and can achieve more harmony in life by working on your inferior function. It's not easy though!
@quiri29676 жыл бұрын
I agree the inferior function is the goal. I just think the auxiliary function is the path to reach that goal. Good navigation does not constantly focus on how far you still have to go but tells you where the next turn is.

@@timefortee First of all, I don't think there's anything wrong with being essentially a gateway into MBTI, if anyone that stumbles upon the channel is truly interested, I'm positive that they'll end up finding another, more niche channel that delves deeper into the roles and nuances of each function and their position in the stack. That's a brilliant use of Fe for him, the single largest MBTI channel at the moment. I understand that FJ's more surface level, but through him I started searching more and ended up finding a lot of great channels (and a few not so great channels). More importantly, I'm talking about how Frank presents himself here and in his updated version specifically. This video is a lot dryer and "uninteresting" compared to his newer version, which, despite being 3.5x longer, is easier to digest. That is growth. I'm an INFP myself so I do like this version and its humor as well, but I'm self aware enough to know that more people find it boring, especially the computer analogy. I think its all in the way he speaks from then and now. If your have personal grievances about him, or think he's manipulating his audience, I'm not entirely sure how you found my comment, but as far as I know, he's not exploiting anyone here. Good explanation, FJ! I liked the elaboration. I also like Jean Kummerow's Tedx talk on Myers Briggs. She explains the categories, and preference. It helped me to think of the four letters of our Type as explaining how we do four activities: gather energy, collect info, make decisions, and live our lives. Introverts want their energy to go in, want to take time to process rather than put it out to others constantly. I like that extroverted people process externally and we all have difference needs/interpretations of interactions. She talks about silences and talking things out, even talking to ones self. She says some introverts may appear to be extroverts. She talks about Intuition as preference of intuiting rather than real sensing, and how we see the same picture differently because we interpret it differently. Feeling refers to the desire to be in harmony with their internal value system not just facts. She comments that Judging types like to organize, make lists and make plans and decisions rather than options and going with the flow. She makes suggestions for what questions to ask ourselves to balance and develop our subdominant functions. I found it interesting in support of what you've shared. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXPOeqyAbNCZlas

It was only when I studied the functions, took functions tests, researched socionics, read books, watched a ton of videos, and consulted with my typology nerd friends that I became 80-90% sure that I’m an INFJ (the Ni dominant, Se inferior is crazy apparent and while I have very strong Te, I absorb other people’s feelings too readily, and my Fi is all but nonexistent).

This all makes sense. As I've been researching MBTI, I've come to understand how to figure out the functions from the letters. But, I actually watched this video hoping that you would explain some things that still do NOT make sense to me: Why does the orientation of the functions have to alternate? (e.g. I, E, I, E)--Why do they have to go in that order? Why can't there be two extraverted functions in a row? For INFJ for example--if the dominant function is introverted intuition, why does the other perceiving function have to be extraverted? Why not introverted sensing too? Why not extraverted feeling and extraverted thinking? I understand that there's a pattern and know how the pattern applies, but right now it seems like that pattern has been decided arbitrarily by humans. I would trust the MBTI system more as it applies to the human psyche if there was a logical reason for the pattern. (And there probably is, but it doesn't make sense to me yet.) Is there any resource you could point me to, to understand, or could you make a video about this in the future? (Or if anyone else has insight, I'd love it.)
@koraljkamiletic6206 жыл бұрын
That was a clear explanation, thank you for your effort ☺. And the pipe actually reminded me of Ernest Hemingway. One of the next topics could be: How can we change the world to better suit INFJs (so our percentage is equivalent to the percentages of other types...I mean, it would be only fair if each type has 6.25% of the population as there are 16 types and not like we have only 2% while some other types have 8%). Although...as an oldtimer, I think the world is already changing...

Thank you I was lately fixated about MBTI codes until I saw your video, thanks a lot fellow INFJ! So basically MBTI code INFJ translated to function is Ni-Fe-Ti-Se which is plus minus plus minus or same principal as Yin Yang sign! 1Dominant 2Auxiliary - 3Tertiary 4Inferior the moment that you have developed the second Inferior part you are in balance or well-rounded person.

You exactly express what I felt/thought. My word to describe the MBTI would always have been superficial, but I've never been very satisfied with this word. I'm a hobby ethymologist, btw, but I did not find the right words. To say the MBTI is a personality test or personality chart or something can be very confusing and people do that, because they only rely on the letters and sometimes don't even know about the functions. The MBTI discribes how you react to your surroundings and environment and how you process it - or, as you said, how you perceive and how you judge it. I'm not very satisfied by the word 'reality', because people discuss what reality really is and everybody has their own reality (because everybody has their own filter) Imo most of the tests at the internet are not reliable, because they are just leaked by the real MBTI and, last but not least, you only can type yourself, when you are really, really self-reflecting. Otherwise you will get the type you want to be and/or what others told you about yourself. That might be the reason why so many INFPs mistype themselves for INFJs. Imo you can only find out your type by studying the functions.

So I looked for a longer video outside of your channel for a more in-depth explanation, but they all fell short. This was the best explanation of cognitive functions I have heard so far, and it was concise AND hilarious! The Smash Mouth reference got me! 🤣 I should have known to start with Frank James the Cool and Attractive. ❤️😁❤️

Certain other KZbinrs ought to watch your videos. They seem to not know about functions and say crap like 'if you like doing [insert activity] then you're not a [insert type], like me'. Do they not realise you cannot put 7 billion people into 16 neat boxes? Things such as upbringing, traumatic events, social/cultural/religious conditioning will also add to your 'personality' so you might sometimes do things differently even though your mbti type is correct. Thank you for your great videos 😊

ok this really confused me at first but i took a 2 hour long shower and now i get it. the thing that made it confusing is you didn’t really explain how to figure out a types dominant, auxiliary, inferior and whatever number 3 is called. so for anyone who isn’t an infj it’s very hard to figure out your function stack. but i remembered your video on how to recognise the types of the people around you, and you mentioned something about how the exxp’s and ixxj’s talk more about ideas or experiences whereas exxj’s and ixxp’s talk more about other people or things. this helped me realise that exxp’s and ixxj’s must have a perceiving function as their dominant and inferior functions and their judging one as auxiliary and the 3rd one, and the exxj’s and ixxp’s have a judging function as dominant and inferior, and their perceiving function as auxiliary and 3rd. so for example my own type, an entp, would have a stack like this: 1. _, (perceiving) 2. _, (judging) 3. _, (judging) 4. _, (perceiving) now to figure out what _ is, all you need to do is look at whether you have an i or an e, whether you are introverted or extroverted. if you are introverted, so is your dominant function and if you are extroverted, the same goes. so as an entp, i am extroverted meaning so is my dominant function. 1. extroverted (perceiving) 2. _, (judging) 3. _, (judging) 4. _, (perceiving) the next bit is pretty easy because you just need to go extroverted, introverted, extroverted, introverted. so now my stack looks like this: 1. extroverted (perceiving) 2. introverted (judging) 3. extroverted (judging) 4. introverted (perceiving) now all you need to do is figure out whether you prefer to use sensing or intuition and whether you prefer to use thinking or feeling. you do this by looking at the middle two letters. as an entp, my middle letters are nt, which means i must prefer intuition and thinking. so my dominant function must be intuition and my auxiliary function must be thinking, whereas function number 3 must be feeling and my inferior function must be sensing (basically the opposites to my inferior and auxiliary functions). so now we can complete the function stack: 1. extroverted intuition (ne) 2. introverted thinking (ti) 3. extroverted feeling (fe) 4. introverted sensing (si) now each type has a sister type, as you explained in a previous video. as an entp, my sister type is an enfp. we share the same dominant and inferior functions, but have different ones at number 2 and 3. here is the function stack of an enfp: 1. ne 2. fi 3. te 4. si each type also has an opposite type. as an entp, my oposite type is an isfj. an isfj’s function stack would be exactly the opposite of mine. so where I have ne as my dominant function, they have si. where i have ti as my auxiliary function, they have fe, where i have fe as my 3rd function, they have ti and finally where i have si as my inferior function they have ne. here is an isfj’s function stack: 1. si 2. fe 3. ti 4. ne this system works with any type. take an istp, for example. they are an ixxp type meaning they use a judging function as their dominant. and because they are introverted their stack must go introverted, extroverted, introverted, extroverted. because they have st as their middle letters their dominant and auxiliary functions must be sensing and thinking, and their inferior and 3rd functions must be intuition and feeling. so here is their stack: 1. ti 2.se 3. ni 4. fe an istps sister type is an intp, and because they share the same dominant and inferior functions but have different functions in the middle, an intp’s stack will look like this: 1. ti 2. ne 3. si 4. fe and the opposite type to an istp is an enfj, whose stack must look like this: 1. fe 2. ni 3. se 4. ti in conclusion, that’s how you figure out the function stack of each type, i hope this helped someone even though it’s a mess and probably just confused you even more (sorry).

I'm an ISFJ and I tried following your steps and I got 1. Fi (because I'm introverted) 2. Se 3. Ni 4. Te Then I read your function stack for the ISFJ and realized I got them all wrong 😂 So now I'm confused, please help!
@oa55383 жыл бұрын
@@courtneylaine8350 ok the reason you got it wrong is because you are an ixxj type. this means that your dominant function is a perceiving function. the perceiving functions are sensing and intuition. what you did wrong is you put a judging function first (the judging functions are thinking and feeling). you need to put a perceiving function first because ixxj and exxp types have perceiving functions as their dominant functions. your preferred perceiving function, as an isfj, is sensing and because you are introverted, it is introverted sensing (si). so your dominant function is si, an introverted function, meaning that the next function has to be extroverted. it also has to be a judging function because your dominant function is perceiving. since your preferred judging function is feeling, your auxiliary function is fe. and then your 3rd function has to be the opposite of your auxiliary function so it’s ti. finally, your inferior function is ne because it’s the opposite of your dominant function. so here is your function stack: 1. si 2. fe 3. ti 4. ne i hope this helped if not just tell me what you’re still confused about. sorry about this though i’m not always great at explaining things...

this was really helpful for me! i am also an infj and seeing that my extroverted sensing is weak solves a lot of my questions as to why I am always so unaware of my surroundings. today I was painting a classroom with a bunch of strangers and I found myself listening to them talking and trying to figure out exactly who they are while I could completely be inches away from a spider and wouldn’t know it. i probably seem so spacey to others because I try to pay attention to many things at the same time.

Always good to review the functions. Even in watching this, I realize I still have such a baby Se :-( On a somewhat unrelated topic, I'd like to see the NT/NF death spiral addressed if you believe it has any merit. I cannot really find any videos addressing this and while I have heard it touched upon in the past, there seems to be a lack of commentaries addressing it overall.
