I decided to make the jump to the Shelix cutterhead everyone is raving about online. I wanted to show you more than just the install. Is it worth it for the sound level? Is the cut quality really that better? Is it worth it because the cutter head is almost as much as the machine itself? Watch until the end and all you questions will be answered.

Longevity! It's what we really buy it for. They are CARBIDE! Also, nearly no tear out on hard woods! In addition, you don't have to replace the cutter, you change it's facet and have 3 more sides left! The vacuum will actually vacuum the wood chips! This thing is awesome!

I bought the DW 735 planer and the factory knives chipped on the first board.I installed the shelix head and I not even turned the carbide cutters yet after a year of planing hundreds of board feet of rough cut red oak,hickory,pecan,beech,walnut and everything else I can think of.The cost savings on not having to buy factory knives every other board is more than worth the $400 price tag.

The Shelix cutters last 10 x longer than the standard blades. Additionally, each Shelix cutter has four sides, so you’ll get 4 times the use out of them, with each one lasting 10 longer. What would it cost you to replace standard blades 40 times?

Great video, thanks very much for posting! I did this yesterday. My advice: Get the snap ring pliers, absolutely will save you time and aggravation. Also get three M5-0.8x10mm screws, you will likely strip the screws that come with the planer - they are on TIGHT. I found both at Home Depot for $13 total. The pulley belt is a PITA to remove but eventually will come out.

A couple of notes to anyone disassembling their machine. First, the part they mention at 3:45 in the video - if you are having trouble rotating your blade assembly make sure you depress this spring-loaded piece. When it is in the up position it locks onto a bolt on that end of the knife assembly, making it very difficult to rotate. Simply depress it down, make the rotation and the knife assembly will lock into position with the screws facing up to make blade removal easy. If you install another cutter head other than Shelix, for instance the Titan Lux Cut Head, be advised that this part cannot be reinstalled onto your machine, as the Titan assembly does not have this bolt on the end nearest the smaller bearing. You would have to alter this part with a file to enable it to slip over the end of the cutter head. Second, at 5:50 you may have to place a small piece of wood between the chain and sprockets. Turning the bolts that hold in the sprockets made my entire assembly rotate, possibly because I did not disassemble in the exact order they mentioned. At 7:45, needle nose pliers work great, just make sure the gripping surface of the pliers have teeth NOT SMOOTH faced. I had my large snap ring out in 3 seconds. At 8:30: DO NOT remove the snap rings in the manner they showed. Get yourselves a pair of actual snap ring pliers. You squeeze the handles, they open, and grip the rings at the same time to prevent them from escaping into your shop never to be seen again. At 10:45 don't use a clamp. Just clamp the entire thing into your vise on your work bench. Using the exact socket needed, the gear comes right out. Otherwise, this is a very helpful video. Thanks for posting guys!

I don't know if anyone had stated this already, but if you're upgrading with the Helical cutter system with the inserts, those inserts are numbered 1-4 on meaning when one side dulls, you can rotate them all to a new side. Definitely worth ensuring all sides are on 1, 2, 3 or 4 to make it easier for rotating the inserts. Awesome video, definitely upgrading! Thanks!!

Instead of removing the roller drive cover, I found that putting one of the blade screws back in and then use a piece of metal bar to tap against the screw to push the shaft out with only a few swings, saves a little time.

Thanks for the complete. And unbiased video and review. I was thinking about getting the Sheila but after using my 735 for about 3 months and running cherry, maple and sapele through it (I buy 4/4 or 5/4 lumber). The surfaces are absolutely as smooth as it gets on the rough setting. So I can’t see how the Shelix would improve things. I can buy 10 sets of new knives (that 20 cutting edges) for,the price of the Shelix. At the rate I use the planer it makes absolutely no sense. The noise factor - doesn’t everyone wear hearing protection and eye protection anyhow? Btw, my snipe is practically not noticeable. Just my 2 cents.

Are you using the stock knives or carbide? I have had problems with the stock knives getting nicks in them while planning clean maple. The finish not at all smooth which led me to get the shelix.

Thank you for the extremely informative video. Following your step by step instructions yesterday, I had the old head out of the machine pending the arrival of the UPS truck with my new Lux lll head. The reassembly process last night got as far as the installation of the new head, minus the inserts. (The large snap ring is a large PITB.) I will finish the job in the morning after enough coffee to wake up my brain. Just for your information - Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is measured with the microphone three feet (one meter) from the sound source. The pickup should be mounted in a holder of some sort, not your hand. A three decibel increase in the SPL represents a doubling in volume. Thanks again for the great video. You made a normally intimidating job very simple.

I have a Makita and 2 oem pullies do not fit shelix shaft and depth of keyway is not correct and key does not fit. I brought to attention during warranty and manufacturer will not fix.

There are now other manufacturers of diy cutter head upgrades such as the Sheila Company which offer same or better quality products at lower cost. In recent years the prices of these cutter heads have spiked and opened the door for competitors to enter the market. This year I will be upgrading both my dw735 and my Ridgid 6” jointers cutter heads with helical ones mainly because, along with the benefits this video listed, helical cutters are amazing with figured wood which is what I work with. Plus I work in my garage and I have neighbors and town ordinances to work around and anything that reduces the noise pollution inherent with woodworking equipment is music to my ears. And my neighbor.s.

Hmm, the cutters on your Shelix has four sides before you need to replace one. I also believe they are quite cheap to buy a pile of them. If they gave you 6 spare, that is 6x4 replacements. I think if you use this most weekend or on most builds it will be worth while, if you are using a lot of re-claimed wood, I think its a no brainer. As the screws you has threading issues with, shame you could not find TORX screws that you could fit to make it all the same type of head. Still.... your probably only going to be opening it again like that every few years, so a bit over kill I suppose.

Replace ALL fastners with TORX drive head, phuck obsolete phillips fasteners. Should have pointed out a missing screw holding the original cutter head blade together

Thanks for the video. I have been considering this upgrade for some time. As you stated in the video a new planner and the Shellix would be about $1000.00. So it would not make sense to buy a new 735 planner and upgrade with the Shelix. The upgrade may not be as cost effective as just buying new replacement steel knives. If my old planner dies I would definitely buy a new planner with the Shellix built in. It is too bad you cannot buy the Dewalt 735 with the Shelix. I think the 735 is a great planner and I have put thousands of feet of boards through mine. However the last set of knives I put in I had a ding on it on the first board. There was no nail or steel the blade just got a nick and I have to pass a board through two times to keep from having a line left on the board. That slows me down but it is not cost effective to replace the knives for this small defect. Bottom line for me the upgrade is not cost effective on my existing 735. The future may have a shelix head but not on my existing 735.

Your board tester corrected himself from shee-lix to shell-ix. Pretty sure the former (shee-lix, rhyming with helix) is correct. It's short for "Shear & Helix". I had one of these heads in my DW735. Their packaging has come a long way since then when it was a brown box with a couple blocks of wood to support it. :) It made a huge difference, and more importantly, got me out of the knife-changing game with the 735. Before the shelix, I was constantly nicking those straight knives on maple. I even used the single-side expensive carbide knives. In the end, the Shelix made a lot more sense. I wasn't concerned so much about cost as I was the irritation of having to constantly rotate the knives. For figured wood, the Shelix makes a huge difference compared to the straight knives. I know you didn't talk about that when talking about quality and sanding, but it's a HUGE difference. If you are doing curly maple or something similar, you will really notice the difference. Really, figured woods is one of the main reasons to go with a helical insert head for any jointer or planer. I have a Hammer/Felder jointer/planer with a silent helical head now. I wouldn't have realized how good those could be if I hadn't tried the Shelix first. Tip on the mic: Get a pop filter of some sort, or make sure you aim your mouth to one side of the mic instead of at it. Your plosives (like when saying "pop" or "purchase") are coming through super loud on the video.

I recently bought a factory refurbished Dewalt 735 with the sole purpose of putting a helical cutterhead in it. I gave it one last careful look-over before starting it up and realized that the splined drive belt had walked forward on the motor pulley as well. I noticed it because it was not parallel to the housing when centered on the cutter pulley. It was really close to the chain that adjusts the depth of cut. There is a little inspection port. I took that off and adjusted the belt at that end too. Just an FYI for anyone doing this. Haven't used it yet but decided to try the LUXCut III also sold by Mywoodcutters.com . I will upload a picture if I can figure it out.

I just bought a new Dewalt DW735 planer and a Lux CUT III cutter head. Your step by step instructions made it a breeze to install. I did pick up snap ring tool at Home Depot for ten bucks and it was well worth it. I used my cordless Ryobi drill with the torque set to fifteen to reinstall the forty cutter heads. This gave all the screws a consistent tightness. Thanks, you didn't miss a step. Looking forward to receiving my Myers Woodshop t-shirt that I ordered in appreciation.

From lots of experience replacing carbide inserts for my lathes and mills, I have to tell you that everything MUST be absolutely clean. The slightest bit of dirt, or even dust, can raise the insert enough to make a noticeable difference in cutting height. Even worse, if the insert is lifted at one corner, with the pressure of the screw, it can shatter when cutting. As far as this being worth it, well, most people don’t have sanders. So add a good $900 for a sander. If you’re sanding by hand, with an orbital sander, it takes a lot of time to take planer marks off. This head seriously shortens the finishing time. The best head, as far as finish is concerned, is a true spiral head that has several spiral cutting blades extending across the entire width of the head. But these are extremely expensive, and require specialized professional resharpening. But boy, are those results good!

I just completed my DW-735 Shelix upgrade using your video as a guide. I only screwed up twice, boogering up one of the hex screws holding a sprocket on, but found I could get by with only removing one sprocket, but it was more difficult to reinstall. I also forgot the large split ring and had to disassemble some stuff to get it into place. I have both large and small c-clip pliers, so removing/installing those wasn’t hard, but finding the holes was difficult because of the low light level where I worked. Thankfully, a hardware store is only a mile away! Thanks! This was a very helpful video. A quick follow-up. The install went fine, but when I actually ran a piece of hardwood stock through the planer, I had a couple of ridges along the length of the board. This necessitated removing a number of the cutters, where I found some debris under a couple of them. Problem fixed. I should have taken more time on the cutter reinstall.

IMPORTANT: This video is very good and I got mine fitted reasonably quick, maybe 2 hours however........ The piece with the spring that has 2 screws that easily sheer became a problem. It wont fit over the new spindle so you have to pass the spindle through it as you are putting the spindle in. I hope that helps as it takes a while to take it all apart again to rectify it.

I'm kind of surprised they don't recommend using Loctite on most of this stuff. I've had a BUNCH of screws and nuts fall off my Dewalt, including the one that held the adjustment wheel on, the spring-loaded outfeed table retainers, etc. I have taken to Loctite-ing everything that falls off. lol

One more thing - each cutter has a mark on it that are all facing the same direction when new. The cutters should be put back so that they all are in the same position. This is so that when you rotate a cutter 90 degrees after it is damaged or wears out, you can identify the rotated ones because they are aligned differently. Otherwise you’ll never be able to figure out which ones have been rotated and how many times they have been. Always rotate in the same direction - clockwise or counterclockwise as you prefer.

18:25 DO NOT REINSTALL THE SLIDE LOCK PLATE. I was told to remove mine by Byrd tech support when they noticed it in a picture I sent them. It can cause problems and potentiality serious damage and isn't needed with their cutter head.

The piece that you hammered back into place (with the spring on it) isn't supposed to be reinstalled. It's an indexing tool that helps removal of the original knives (when changing blades). If you noticed, when you took the 3 original knives out, you're supposed to have to press down on it (since it's spring loaded) in order to rotate the knife holding head 1/3 revolution. When released, the contact points hold the head head on the small bearing shaft side of the assembly. When you reinstall the dust chute, it presses down on it and allows motor operation. Since the carbide blades are in a shelix/helix pattern (and given the fact that the new assembly doesn't have a hex end), it's simply not needed.

Any real need to reinstall the locking mechanism since that end does not have a hex on the shelix ? I’m just going to reinstall the Phillips screws to keep dust and chips out of there and store the locking mech with the old mandrel.

Where the blades before sharp like new? I guess they were used for a while before you replaced them with the shelix. If you compare you should compare both with brand new blades.

they were flipped on the second side so nearly new.

The noise is quite a difference, however, the only reason you are getting smoother cuts is because it was a used machine and likely saw a ton of use. It certainly looked as though it did. I would buy a larger machine or the 735 and replace the knives when needed. Thanks for the video. Sorry about the buyers remorse! lol Keep the videos coming.

There's one more thing to compare against stock blades: Tear out on figured wood like curly maple. I'm thinking about one of these and was wondering if you or one of the other readers know if the shelix helps reduce tear out?

Something you don’t mention is that with certain woods you will get chipping even with brand new knifes and no chipping with the shelix cutter head.

You did not mention the better cutting of highly figured wood with very little tear out. Worth it if you mill any exotic materials.

Thanks for doing this. Very clear demonstration. I am in the process of deciding between a drum sander and this Dewalt with Shelix cutting head. I would not consider the planer unless I could install the Shelix. Watching this I think I could do it. I too will probably get the OEM for the same reasons you described.

Started this disassemble tonight - you're OEM cutter cylinder rotates way smoother than mine! I had to use quite a bit of force just to turn it a little bit.

At 18:23 in your video you use some “gentle persuasion” to reinstall the cutter rotate lockplate. The instructions from Byrd Tool say to discard that lockplate. That may be why it didn’t fit well.

Thanks for posting. Great video! I've watched numerous Shelix install videos and this is definitely one of the better, particularly the video with good shots of all the key steps. The snap ring sequences were a little painful to watch, but they got it done, albeit with 2 people and "3 pairs of hands". Nits I can't help but pick: The whole assembly is "the cutter head" so when you remove each of the 40 individual carbide inserts, you're not "removing every single cutterhead." One thing missing was a summary of the pros and cons of the OEM size vs. the reduced size versions of the Shelix cutterhead. And, although I make the same mistake if I'm not being careful, it's not 'Shell-icks", it's supposed to rhyme with 'helix', hence the spelling with 1 "l", pronounced "Sheeelicks". But these are clearly gratuitous criticisms, the video is clear, well-lit, and steady and the narration overall is quite good, making it a pleasure to watch!

At 19:02 - when you've replaced the two phillips screws with the spring plate... I have the screws tightened as far as they'll go yet there is still a "spring in it's step" for that plate. Screws are tight yet not holding plate secure... Please confirm this is normal. Thanx!!!

Thank you for this Video! For one I went and bought a snap ring pliers, and two instead of giving that one piece some “gentle persuasion “ I sanded down the edges, since that piece really doesn’t have any use anymore anyway. Ran my first board through and I have to say I’m super impressed! Great investment!
