ryan davies was the ultimate all round welsh entertainer. Sadly he died in 1977 aged just 40. A naturally funny man with a fantastic voice. His Myfanwy by far the best version

That's wonderful Twm. I'd just recently decided to call my new campervan Myfanwy. I was aware of the song of course, having grown up in the Valleys, but discovering the history of your legend has brought more pleasure and I'm super proud that Myfanwy will be touring the roads of Ireland (where I live now) very soon. Diolch yn fawr.

You should be! He was the best all round Welsh entertainer ever - Singer, songwriter, musician, actor & comdedian. I was only 14 when he died but I never forget him & I never tire of playing 'Ryan at The Rank' Vol 1 & 2. Absolutely, brilliant he was!😊

As an Englishman living in Wales I was asked many years ago to accompany some friends to a show in Swansea Grand . It was billed as a Welsh variety show and if I’m honest I did not much fancy it. Ryan Davies was the compère and star. The first half was excellent but the second half, which was basically a one man show by Ryan, was amazing. The late great Bruce Forsyth was lauded for his versatility, but believe me he could not hold a candle to Ryan Davies. Comedy, singing, dancing , playing a variety of instruments you name it he did it. What a star. What a loss.

Duw, listening to this has taken me back to my initial police training at Cwmbran in 1974. We had a lad on our course with a fantastic voice and he could bring the students' bar to total silence of an evening when he stood up to sing Myfanwy. Listening to Ryan singing it has just sent a tingle right down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Diolch.

My father was not a great lover of music, but he loved Ryan, and this was one of his very few favourites. He passed away in January 2020, at the age of 89 and, at his cremation in the February, this was one of the 3 songs I chose for the service. Absolutely amazing.

My father Alex Johnstone was the drummer at Swansea Grand Theatre for many years and shared happy times with Ryan doing the pantomimes. I have to come back to this ever so often, both for the song, and for this wonderful performance. I have had most recently the feeling that this song imparts, of being left by a beautiful girl, but at the last word, she stayed. It brings more tears than as if she had really said "farwell" as Myfanwy does in this song. What a shame so few got the opportunity to take joy in this great talent of a man.

I was born in Tumble in 68. My parents always had the Ryan at the Rank on, guess it kinda stuck with me, then welsh pride was at it's greatest. The one line which will always make me smile, is when Ryan thanked Mr Rank for the use of his hall, we had so much pride back then, Max,Ryan, cabaret's in the local Rugby club etc, now I live in Newcastle and all they gave us was Ant n Dec.. And the English say were slow. Imagine Ronnie and Ryans Saturday night takeaway.

I was lucky enough to have been a pupil at St John's in Shirley, Croydon when Ryan was teaching there in the 1960s. As you can probably imagine, 'Mr Davies' was a very popular teacher! It was always fun when he was teaching. Music sessions were briliant, even if I did always end up with a triangle when I wanted the symbols! Harpists used to come in & play to us too, this was surely Ryan's influence. I remembered him fondly as I was growing up, I had no idea that he had left teaching & was very surprised when he appeared on the TV in Ryan & Ronnie. He lived in the next road to us & I remember my Mum sending me round to his house with a card & some flowers when one of his children was born. I'm sure that he is remembered with great affection by all who were fortunate enough to have meet him.

I never met him....or Ronnie. Here in Wales at the age of eight, I would watch them both in black and white speaking a language I didn't understand ; yet laugh out loud because they were funny. Their humour crossed the language barrier. When I was fourteen , Ryan died. I was extremely saddened by this news. I'm now pushing sixty. Ryan Davies has yet to be replaced here in Wales. He never will be.

I do like the pictures of this man's life, so great he was. I can't help but come back to his songs in the sadness of the nights that are so long and think of the fact that sweetness, tenderness and intelligence is so superior and helpful to the soul compared to the bare and raw noisy bellowing or emoting that I hear so much today.

Why is it anger, O, Myfannwy, that fills your dark eyes; And why do your gentle cheeks, O, Myfannwy, not blush upon seeing me? Where is the smile once on your lips, which sparked my foolish, faithful love? Where is the sound of your sweet words which saw my heart race after you? Myfannwy, may you be all your life, under the shining midday sun. And may the bloomed rose of health dance a century upon your cheeks. Forget all of the promises you made to someone, fair maiden. And give your hand, gentle Myfannwy, to do no more than say, 'Farewell'. the health in the sixth line can be substituted with youth or youthfulness. The Welsh version is much nicer to read. Oni fynwch fyned yn waeth nag anifeiliaid, mynwch addusg yn y Gymraeg.

We, and a few other volunteers, provided a "backing-track" for one of his songs. We played various instruments whilst Ryan gripped his larynx with his fingers, and oscillated his voice-box to the tune of "The Blue Danube" . its been a year since i commented on this, but have to say Mr. Davies technique is so flawless, tender, and true, I have tried so hard to sound like him. It seems that only this song has such purity and sweetness, and tenderness in the voice that is also gripping is so hard to do. Mixing words of rejection with a beautiful sound is so unique, I enjoy this performance tremendously, makes me want to sing it over and over myself.

Oh dear God... I've loved this song for years, and I even named by own cat 'Myfanwy', so how did I never hear this version until now? His rendition broke me... recent rejection probably didn't help! :p In any case, diolch yn fawr iawn for uploading. :)
