A really good thing to do with George is to teach him to “Shake” hands. Give him a treat when he puts his paw in your hand. Yorkie’s are smart and mine LOVES a treat. And you can teach him “Shake” with “Right” and “Left.” It will get him used to having his paws touched. I bet he would learn it within just a few short sessions. Dad we know you can do it! My dog acted just like George and now I can cut his hair with scissors with no drama. He stays calm.

I have a male Yorkie that also HATES his front legs touched at all. Since I can't find a groomer that will groom him more than once, I have to clip him myself. He hates the clippers so I have to use a scissors for his whole body. Props to you for taking the difficult ones.

I adopted my Yorkie/Pom at 10 months, oh my was she matted. She is almost 6 now & I have started to groom her myself. It took a couple years b4 she would even trust me but I was persistent & we get brushed several times wkly. I keep her cut short, so much easier to bathe. Pet Mom get use to one on one everyday brushing & saying what a pretty, good boy when brushing and yes walks/playtime sure helps to wear a yorkie down. You did a great job with him, poor guy was traumatized at one time due to something. Also have Mom when just holding him, calmly touch/rub his paws so he gets used to being touched on his paws. Mine still hates the blow dryer, so she "air dries".

A dog that is already VERY nervous and skittish needs to be addressed in a very calm and firm voice. Don't give him commands made out of too many words. "Stop" or "no" suffice. Everything else is too much and confuses the dog.

I am in UK and have just adopted 2 yorkies. Father ( 3)and son, (18 months)both young. They were surrendered to RSPCA. They are very thin and the coats were really awful. They had ti have them very close due to matting and fleas. They have had daily brushing and 2 baths over 3 weeks and the change in their coats is brilliant. We still have a long way to go. But will apply some of the tricks you showed.

I keep my yorkie's hair long & just trim the muzzle, tips of ears, privates & pads/feet. I comb her every day so there are no mats - and it only takes 2 min.! If she ever does get a tangle, I hold the hair above the tangle and comb it out. That way, my comb is pulling against my fingers, not against her skin, which would hurt. Works great. I had an Old English sheepdog for 14 yrs. and did the same with him - worked great & he never had a tangle or mat on him!

This dog can learn that brushing won’t hurt him, and he can learn to like it. It took me months of daily showing my yorkie the soft bristle brush and then lightly brushing him just a few strokes. I waited until the afternoon when he was relaxed, tired and sleepy. I always quit brushing before he showed any sign of getting upset. Every week I could brush him longer and I used this same process to show him scissors and how they opened and closed and let him hear the sound they made. Of course when I made a small cut that was a different sound. It has taken much longer to get him used to the scissors. But he had made tremendous progress. If you rush your dog you will just prolong the process.

Ok- I have a suggestion- when I trained my lil girl to the clippers and scissors - I turned the clippers on and rubbed then on my dog, not cutting the hair just side ways- to get the sound and vibration! I also rubbed the scissors unopened around the face to get the feel of them- then I opened them and closed them to learn the sounds!! It was a simple thing but it made her feel much more comfortable with the grooming!! I’ve had no trouble with my dog ever- I started her at 4 weeks old!!

Many people simply don't care. They don't research the breeds, they don't listen, they just see pictures and this "oh how cute"... 🤦🏾‍♀️ meanwhile my mom got our first yorkie when I was 7 and my brother was 2, she would give all 3 of her kids brush days and made sure we did it right. Its one of the reasons I chose a yorkie as a service dog

Fantastic tutorial on how to groom a bucking bronco/ whirling dervish. Holy Cow no matter what he did you were calm and patient with him. No surrender just kept moving toward the finish. You totally deserve every bit of that tip because 3 minutes into that whirling bucking move and another groomer would have either thrown in the towel or had so many people holding him he would been more traumatized than he already is.I would love to see more of George as he rehabilitates because you have made that your goal. Not to just stick him with a label or to tranquilize him you are helping those parents by working towards a calmer not terrified George. You rock and are the best groomer I have ever seen. If we all had 1/4 of your compassion the world would be a much better place.

I've owned Yorkies for over 28 yrs and the best advice I can give is to handle them and brush their coat daily, without fail! A slicker brush works best. Unless you keep them shaved, daily brushing is a necessity. From the time they are a puppy you must handle their feet, toenails, ears, tail, their muzzle, and teeth. If you start clipping their toe nails from puppy age, they will allow it. Same goes for cleaning ears and brushing their teeth. Yorkies are very prone to dental disease, so it is imperative that you brush their teeth daily! Otherwise they have to undergo general anesthesia to have a professional dental cleaning and scaling. There are plenty of how-to videos online about these topics, so NO EXCUSE to have a pet like this that is 1 year old and out of control, stressed out fighting grooming!

Over a year late, but to any pet owners watching this in the future who may have a rescue with similar feet issues, the key is positive reinforcement while regularly playing with their feet. My dog was worse than George when we got her. We sat down every night for foot and face time (she was terrible with anything going near her face too). I would break up pieces of her favorite treats, and she would get them in return for letting me massage her feet and scratch her chin. Within a year, chin scratches were one of her favorite things, and even until she passed away due to old age 14 years later, she would raise each foot for the groomer when it came time to work on it.

A lot of dogs hate to have their feet touched let alone clipped. When I got my Morkie as a puppy, I was told to mess with his feet a lot to get him used to it. Most of what I'm seeing is the typical spoiling of a "cute baby". My dog is 10 years old and people are always amazed at how well behaved he is. Spoiling a dog is no better than spoiling a child.

My dogs acted like George when I pulled out the Oster clippers. My maltipoo was petrified when we started shaving his fur he was so nervous but the second time I was speaking to him calm I shave everything except for the face so for the face I have to trim with scissors. My Shih Tzu mix he was calm we shave his body and the back of the legs but he wouldn't let himself shave the face and legs I had to do it with scissors. But we r getting better every time. It takes a lot of patience.🙂

I have a rescue Yorkie and he gets brushed daily & a bath once a week since he gets greasy hair. He gets snotty goopy eyes & that’s a full time job keeping his face clean. I use contact solution to help soften the dried goopy & then I use a lice comb to get it all out. Once a month he gets a “bikini wax” (hygiene cut). He lays on his back & falls asleep when I use the clippers. I’m disabled & unable to work which allows me to spend all day with him. He has been easy to train. It also helps having my service dog pave the way in the training of basic commands. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to give him the attention he desperately wants & needs. Every six months or so, a mobile groomer comes to my house since my SD has to be w/ me 24/7. Both dogs get a makeover & a cutesy bandana. You’re not far from me & once I get cleared to drive, I’d love to meet you & give them both a good makeover so long as I can be with my SD as he gets all purtied up. 😊😊😊

I feel that I need to clarify a comment I made. When I said that George needed to be sedated. I didn't mean knocked. I was thinking about the concept of sedation dentistry when they give a nervous client something to calm them down. I was thinking that there must be something like this for a jumpy dog like this.

I hope this is a teachable moment for all parents of long haired dogs who do not understand the critical importance of regular grooming. George is exceptionally beautiful. I hope his human Mom and Dad take better care of him going forward. If his coat is this bad, his teeth will soon be bad, too (as this breed is particularly prone to dental disease). It's hard to watch such a beautiful boy suffer such fear of grooming. I have two (double coated) Tibetan Terriers in full coat so I know that daily grooming means everything. Because I feed them a raw diet, I need to wash their beards and around their mouths after each (1X daily) meal; this leads naturally to a 15-20 minute grooming session. That's all it takes if it you do it every day! Grooming my boys is a bonding experience for us; I learned a few years ago to include massage in our routine so of course they love it. If pet parents cannot give their long hair dogs the grooming they need, they should consider a short hair breed. My son has a French Bulldog, for example--no fuss, no muss! Good luck to this family. The Dad seems like a nice man.

Hey, I'm a dog behaviorist and I've started studying grooming to complement my skills :) I've been watching your videos to kind of get accustomed to the practical aspects of it while I'm still on the written part of the course haha. As for this video though, I think I can give you a tip about dogs like these, you see, unlike small kids they don't understand comforting when they're uncomfortable the same way. If you keep petting them they will keep freaking out, but if you take a "Tough Love" approach and are firm and let them see nothing bad is happening, they will calm down a lot faster. You can see that when you were more stern he stopped quite a bit more quickly :P Anyway I hope this helped ^^

you melted my heart lady! I recently was blessed to get a little 3 and 1/2 yr.. old Biewer Yorkie and man she was matted just like this one! The vet paperwork said she had to have "stitches from clippers" so instead of taking her in the first time, ( and I didn't have clippers on hand) I just hauled out a pair of small sissors and a comb....I couldn't comb through the massive matts but I could take the comb to kind of lift the large masses of matt and little by little cut into the masses to at least get down to the skin...then go from there...I ordered clippers that came in the mail so when they got here I realized I didn't get decent ones and could only use it without the black blades on it...and even then it didn't cut worth a toot...but little by little we cleaned up the mess good enough so that now, as it grows out, we can keep it free from matts and I can have a pro groom her cute ( I chucked my clippers! lol ) ! My little girl was scared to pieces, but she never bit at me Thank God, and i'm just hoping that as we get used to one another she can hopefully get to a point that hair brushing isn't scary to her and the matts will NEVER be an issue again!

I'm surprised he doesn't like being brushed. My dog is a Yorkshire terrier mixed with Pomeranian and even when he was young brushing was always relaxing for him.
