Glad to hear it was only the wires mixed up. To set most carbs so that the engine will atleast run. Wind the mixture screw all the way in, then count 3 revolution back out. The engine should atleast run and you can tune from there. To tune it, after that run the engine and get it idling smoothly. Then slowly tighten the mixture screw back in, I used to go by a 1/4 turn each one by one listening for the engines note to change. Keep both carbs balanced as you tighten them. The second you hear the note change of the engine, turn both screws a half turn back out and that's it.

The fitting on the diesel tank is just an ordinary brass union, probably size 1/2". You can find those in most hardware stores. I would suggest removing it including the pipe and plugging the hole (probably a 1/2" or 3/4" standard plug). Instead weld in a new feed pipe in the top of the tank (in the lid will be easiest). Make the pipe end 10 cm above the bottom of the tank, that way you will avoid sucking all the dirt and crap into the filters. You will also reduce the risk of a fuel line leak filling up your boat with diesel by gravity, especially if you run your fuel line below the engine fuel pump.
@giles-df9yu3 жыл бұрын
As I understand it brass fittings of imperial and us standard are close enough to screw together he just needs to to a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter
@motorboatselmaiii1093 жыл бұрын
@@giles-df9yu No, the thread on the fitting left on the pipe is not tapered and thus unsealable. It is non-standard and only meant for the union nut. The only way to use it is to use the old counterpart and nut. But if it is connected to a hose, there is no need for a union, a valve is enough. BSP (British Standard Pipe) is standard for pipe threads in Europe, and it's measured in inches.
@MrTallpoppy583 жыл бұрын
@@motorboatselmaiii109 Yes, the union connector must go, it's not actually a pipe thread/size, so it will not likely match anything. The pipe is 3/8". If you cut it off clean, I wonder if there is enough room to get a set of hand dies in and cut new metric threads ? It looks like a short length of pipe from a socket in the side of the tank.
@motorboatselmaiii1093 жыл бұрын
@@MrTallpoppy58 Why would you do that? It is a standard pipe nipple screwed into a pipe coupling that is welded to the side of the tank. The solution is to screw out the pipe nipple and screw in either a standard pipe plug or a valve, depending on if he wants to replace it with a suction pipe in the top of the tank or not. Metric is not used for that type of piping in Europe, so changing it doesn't make sense.
@MrTallpoppy583 жыл бұрын
@@motorboatselmaiii109 There are a lot of options. He said BSP is hard to get, I am not sure I believe that but ok, go with it: BSP is out. The union seems to be welded, strange, but can not see clear enough. The pipe piece you are I think calling a nipple (its not) looks to be just screwed jointed into the socket on the tank. Take it out, cut off the union and put any thread you like on it, put it back in the tank and the new threat is ready for what ever you like. That is ok for diesel, don't use white tape, a fuel rated paste is better.

I would recommend to check ignition timing on Bayliner with strobe light. Easy process but if it is wrong you will burn valves and pistons. Marine engines work 100% of its power all time, so ignition timing is important not to overheat piston-valves by late/early combustion (hands on experience ;) ).
@alan68323 жыл бұрын
Did you hear spark knock before burning engine parts? or evidence of spark plugs running too hot? If you run really hot spark plugs that are not precious metal type, the spark plug electrodes should melt before anything more valuable melts. I did this once in an old car. I have repeatedly advanced timing on worn out low compression engines to compensate for the reduced compression and plug fouling, but with a sharp ear for spark knock and repeated plug checks for excessive heat.

Fuel tank, If this were mine I would install a new Brass Bulkhead fitting near the bottom of the tank and add a proper ball valve and diesel fuel rated fuel line. You can cut off your old feed pipe and put a plate over the hole. In the plate you can add a port to install a proper fuel level sight tube and this way always know your fuel level. While the tank is open and being modified now is the time to install a port to add a fuel polishing system and never have fuel trouble again.

Having the second engine for parts turned out to be a lucky break.

You have come a long way. You have improved all your skills and doing a great job. Your weldings are much better, and your wiring is better than mine. Congratulations on your project. Do better research and find that connection for the Diesel fuel line. Avoid cutting the pipe and welding; that will be a great mistake and a significant headache. Instead, check Amazon UK or the USA; they may have it. Also, read the comments; a lot of people are providing you with great advice. I wrote you a comment on the episode when you changed the motor in the Bayliner, and I told you to rebuild the carburators without wasting time. I had a boat in the ’80s used in saltwater with twin Volvos the same you have, and the carburetors are a continuous pain. Ensure that you have a water separator in the fuel line to avoid internal carburetor corrosion. The Rubber bellow (rubber hose) on the outdrive should have been inspected before placing the boat on the water; the rubber bellow protects the U-joint from water damage. Be aware that algae can grow in Diesel fuel over time, depending on how long the fuel stays in storage. Also, depending on your refueling needs over time, you may need to add an additive to the Diesel fuel. Therefore, I highly recommend that you do some research on that topic to stay informed. With weather changes, condensation will form in fuel tanks, mainly on boats on the water; water separators are a good idea for gasoline and diesel fuels.

I so agree with ths new tank. With all the updates, it seems wasteful to ruin it with an old rusted diesel tank. Personally not a fan of steel tanks for diesel in a wet environment. An aluminium tank or poly tank would have current spec fittings and won't rust. A top mount sending unit with fuel guage will save you from excessive filter replacement. A contaminated fuel system is a horrible pain in the arse that you would not enjoy.

Just a general FYI for the future when diagnosing carb problems. You have to understand that carbs have different operating circuits that deliver and meter fuel at different RPMs so you need to first identify what circuit is at fault. Won't idle? Most likely the idle circuit. Won't accelerate quickly? Accelerator pump. The name of the circuit almost identifies the type of problem.
@mysticwolf28423 жыл бұрын
Go to a marine supply they will be your best bet for getting the right parts you need, from the experience I have had before you get what you need check the insides of the tank as well for signs of corrosion as well. If you have gunk in the tank then you may have a pin hole leak. For the fittings I would use brass throughout, most boat builders today use brass and stainless for fuel lines.

You could have started by turning the idle mixture and idle speed screws on the carbs, after mearsuring and writing down the original position. Often you can turn the idle mixture screw, start the engine just momentarily, and turn the screw back again to where it was, and this action will break up a clog, returning the idle mixture to normal. If your engine stalled then your idle speed was obviously zero, so you can just turn it up to where it is supposed to be, and if you fix an underlying problem like idle mixture or timing, then you can just turn it back to where it was. One you have it running, often fuel detergent and use will clean out dirt from the idle circuit and then the idle speed that you raised will get too high, so you can lower it again.
@homeFall13 жыл бұрын
I have also done the trick with blocking the intake with a rag with the engine revved up to suck crap out of the metering system on carbs before. Goal is to rev the motor and then block the intake with a rag until the engine slows WAY down but doesn't stall. If it does stall no big deal just fire it back up and repeat.

On my 86 bayliner I had nothing but problems with my carburetor. I rebuilt it myself but didn't drill out the idle mixture jets on the old quadrajet unit. Finally had to send it in to a pro rebuilder to have it done. the 2 years later the symptoms returned and had to send it in again. turns out that the ethynol fuel evaps and leaves huge deposits of corn glue in the float bowl and blocks the idle jets that have to be drilled out to be cleaned. I used high pressure air and carb cleaner but just couldn't get the goonk out of the jets. I would have started with the carbs then worked backwards in the fuel system. The other problem I had was the shift cable adjustment could not be correctly adjusted. I had to modify the shift cable rod length to make it shift right. a factory design error.

It consists of three parts of which you still seem to have one attached there. You could also just cut that section off and make new threads on it. You can probably rent a handheld pipe threading machine that plumbers use. Those are pretty easy to operate.
