Glad you got there in the end, despite the disbelievers. You could have got that doctor struck off for discriminating against you like that. Disgraceful behaviour. I've heard of other people having their treatments delayed by months or years by doctors pretending they've made referrals, so this isn't just you who had this sort of problem, but this doc sounds like one of the more brazen ones. I hope you get more respect now that you're out and proud! :-)

Why should the state pay for it though?

It's called dysphoria and makes these people feel bad in their gender. It's not a tantrum or a vice, but a serious discomfort that lead people to desperation or suicide. An elderly person like the one in the video was basically forced to live a life as a man while he FELT like a woman. You don't wake up in the morning and say "ok, let's have two boobs and some lipstick", it's a long and exhausting process that starts when you are a child and feel literally desperate. It's not like being straight or gay, since they don't have any dysphoria. Pretend you are a man but for a lifetime you want to be a woman. Or vice versa. It would not just be frustrating, it would be the most alienating and desperate state of mind. In Italy this operation, in fact the whole procedure (physical and psychological), is paid by the state hospitals. And that's a way to assure dignity and peace of mind to those people who might be our friends or family members.
