A quick update after 8 years: the solenoid broke again. I think this time it is the rubber part that is getting old. Need to open the valve and look, but in the meantime it flooded my engine. I had to do an oil change in order to avoid engine damage. Check your oil level before you ride, especially when you encounter a lot of smoke when you start the engine!

These engines have so many issues it blows my mind that Kohler has not been sued over a the bad design. Be sure to check the sump bolts up under the top blower cover, if they come loose it will crack the case and you’ll need a new engine. When I service these engines I remove them clean the oil off threads and install red locktite then torque them to spec.

Your video is the absolute best on KZbin for accessing the carb, removing the solenoid and putting everything back together again. Cleaning my carb and replacing all the gaskets fixed my mower, but I’m still saving this video for future reference. Thanks!!
@butchs.42395 жыл бұрын
Nicely done on the video. I'd still add an inline fuel shutoff between the tank and the carb as the solenoid only blocks off the main jet leaving fuel in the bowl. I prefer to shut off the fuel and let the engine run till the carb is dry before putting the mower away. It's also handy when you need to remove the fuel line from the carb as you can do so without spilling fuel all over the place. One other suggestion, if your mower is running hot remove the shrouding and clear all the crud out of the cooling fins. You'd be amazed how much stuff can get trapped between the block and the sheet metal, reducing the motor's ability to cool itself.
@supermas35 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that piece of advice Butch. Would you let the use the shutoff for normal operation or just at the end of the season?

Depends where your gas tank is. Mine is up there under the steering wheel, and gravity pushes the fuel down. Some tractors have the gas tank under the seat, on the same level as the carburetor, or below, there you need to pump the gas up.

That Solenoid is an Anti-Backfire Valve. It has a little plunger that engages and shuts the gas off so it doesn't backfire when you turn the key off. If it ever quits working, cut the plunger tip off, screw it back in if you don't care.
@JasonSmith-utube2 жыл бұрын
This is what I always do to mine. I've done it on several mowers now. One other problem I ran into was the solenoid will get loose around the body of the actual solenoid where it's threads start, and it will start dripping gas. The best solution is to find a fine thread bolt, like an oil drain plug with a gasket. Make sure the bolt is short enough, cut it if need be, add the gasket and just basically seal the hole up with the plug you made. By reading these comments almost everyone on here has no idea what that solenoid even does. It doesn't shutoff the fuel flow to the carb bowl from the tank. And it doesn't help with starting faster or easier. The reason the fuel doesn't stop and floods the engine is because your float valve is sticking. All the solenoid does is stop it from backfiring only when you shut the key off. That's it.
@EliminatorPerformance6 жыл бұрын
Good professional video, always nice to see the proper way to fix things! Using some metallic heat tape will also prevent this issue, and be a little less costly. Cutting the solenoid tip off works too, but as you said, it can still Backfire. Normally I would just throttle the engine rpm down to low, then shut it off. That usually that prevents the backfiring when the solenoids are cut. Cheers from Ontario Canada!

@@23BeRAD Your engine manual has a "Carburetor Troubleshooting and Adjustments" section. You're supposed to have a RPM gauge on the cylinders spark plug to monitor RPM i think. But there's a low idle set screw and a fuel mixture screw on the carb itself that u can usually get to. Some also have a governor gear on them. You could check if you have one of those to adjust too. Also, they make spark detectors. An in between cord that goes from your spark plug to the plug wire. It has a clear bulb fuse type filament in it. And it shows how much charge, and at what interval the spark is being sent to plug. If it's not constant, it could indicate a coil problem. Watch Taryl.

Finally popped the flywheel off and sure enough, magnets on the flywheel were pulverized shorting out the stator.

Psycho Hick did it run before you replaced the solenoid?
@donaldteal87205 жыл бұрын
@@mygiguser always ran. I just found the real culprit on my Kohler 12.5 hp. The block was filling with gas. What the problem was caused by is the....... FUEL PUMP DIPHRAM . It has a split in it and when the needle would stop the fuel from entering the float bowl it overcame that resistance and would pump the crankcase full of fuel to the point it would stop running. Unless you smelled the dipstick and got out a microscope you can't see gas on a dipstick very easily. Most Briggs have an external fuel pump that isn't mechanical, like the one Kohler uses. It's operated by a cam lobe similar to GMs older 350 , 283 ,327 etc. Anyway my problem is solved. Thanks

@johanh23193 жыл бұрын
Has he answered your question? Unfortunately these are non adjustable other than a high throttle setting or that idle adjust on the side of the carb with a cap on it, if they come with it. @@mygiguser It probably will reverse the polarity of the electromagnet reversing the direction of the center pushing probe when energized....up (off) instead of down. The probe needs to spring upward to shut off the gas feed when not energized. The local small engine shop wanted $92 plus 8% tax just for a new solenoid for an 18 hp Kohler. A brand new complete carb is on its way with all new: inline filter, solenoid, 2 gaskets, wiring harness, even a zip tie...and free shipping for $17.22 plus 1.38 tax, or $18.60 total. (NewCarb in New Jersey) Ships from CA.

Thanks for the video! Will this solenoid be fit in KS540 engine? Seems CV engine in the video.

Be careful. My throttle was stuck open on my Kohler courage and turned out the inner throttle butterfly had came loose and the the screws and butterfly went into the engine. It ate the screws but thankfully the valve stopped the butterfly. I used loctite on the screws to prevent a repeat. It runs now but its having low RPMs so I am changing the solenoid next.

CHALK772 not sure if Loctite is going to help because of the temperature and the gasoline washing it away?!

I just replaced the carb on my engine. I hope I got all the bits & bobs in the right place! When I tested both the new and the old solenoid by touching them to battery terminals (both polarities) both of them seemed dead. I expected them to click, but no... The old one seemed definitely stuck, while the new one had a removable pin and spring. What could I be doing wrong? I actually have not tried running it...
@mygiguser4 жыл бұрын
Jaimes Beam remove the solenoid and test it on a battery, make sure the battery is charged and has the right voltage.
@jimbaranski46874 жыл бұрын
mygiguser As stated above, I tried this, and both solenoids appear dead.

Hey bro. Great work. I'm working on my dad's right now. Can you help us. We put a new carb. And silo. On and forgot how to hook up the red wire and black wire on the plug in . Does it matter which side does the red wire go and the black wire or can it go to either one
@mygiguser2 жыл бұрын
well, black is ground, and red is power.

should have taken the top shroud off while your at it and lock tite the bolts to the case I've seen multiple cracked blocks from bolt coming out and hitting flywheel
