For people to take time out of their lives to criticize a completely benign and harmless channel is just sad. I love your videos, especially the ones in which you share recipes and your grocery hauls. You're super organized and an inspiration to many households. Although I am not jewish, I follow several Jewish content creators, most of whom are Orthodox, Sephardi or Ashkenazi. what I like about your channel is that you are a young, modern couple, who are keeping your faith in a fast changing world. You are keeping your faith relevant and in a way that works for you, in that modern world. It's refreshing to young people thinking about their faith in a fluid way, whilst accepting that others choose to adhere more to the traditional interpretation. I wish you well! Xx

The reality is most modern American Jews align with you rather than orthodox Jews. Your opinion and your Jewish way of life doesn't become invalid because you don't align with Orthodox Judaism. I really hate that many orthodox people feel they have the authority to tell people how to live their life and act as they are the gate keepers of Judaism. My partner and I struggle to find a balance of people passionate about Judaism but aren't extreme in their daily activities like many orthodox people.

Not just Orthodox people feel that they have the authority to tell people how to live their life. There are plenty of Conservative and Reformed Jews who believe that their way is "THE RIGHT" way.

@@Sali-yw1rd Orthodox Jews are a separate sect just as Reconstructionist, Reform, Conservative and even Modern Orthodox. Yes we are all Jewish. Even Secular Jews are still Jews. I went to Israel 3 years ago for my cousins wedding and their Chassid. I'm disabled, in a wheelchair, and I was criticized because I chose to wear a pant suit because for me, its more comfortable than a dress or a skirt. I respect my family however my family doesn't always respect me because of my disability. So no I think Mariam has every right to differentiate the sects because there is a reason for it. Just my two cents.

Sadly, for those of us trying to convert, they are the gatekeepers of conversions. Even tho I think conservative Judaism is where it’s at, if I convert conservative most Jews wouldn’t acknowledge me as a true Jew, even if they themselves don’t believe in orthodoxy.

Erev Tov! Thank you for explaining your views. I support you and your take. I was raised Chassid, and I finally left in my 40's. I am not a non-observant/Secular Jew who only observes when it comes to family gatherings. Do I do Shabbos every week? No, it's very difficult for my because I'm disabled and in a wheelchair, plus my wonderful husband does all the work to keep the house running because of my disability it's incredibly hard for me to do so. So we might do Shabbos once a month if we're not exhausted by the end of the week. I have lived in both worlds, the Shomer and the Secular and I am much happier in the Secular, so I tell folx do whatever makes you happy and don't let the judgement of others get you down. Our lives are the universe and if we would all just stop nitpicking and bullying others to conform to the way they think we should live our lives would be better and happier for it. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful videos. L'hitraot!

I agree with you 100% about your interpretation of keeping Kosher. As a reform Jew I think that the ethics of what we eat is most important: eating locally source food, abstaining from meat as much as possible, and thinking about the environmental impact that certain food industries make. I tend to lean vegetarian/vegan, so I keep Kosher by default. There are so many pathways in Judiasm. I love your videos! It really does not make sense that those who do not agree with conservative Judaism feel that it is okay to criticize.

Freedom! :) After a discussion with a Rabbi online, I've decided to become a Noahide (due to several factors), and I don't really feel "plugged-in" right now, especially with women, but I can play one of your videos, and I know things will turn out just right. I am not Jewish, but have always felt drawn to Judaism since a young teen. I’m now 71 and practice Buddhism in the way that works for me. Also like Christianity, Islam and other religions, there are people who follow the teachings they have learned to the letter. We learn from our own experience what feels right. Comfort and confidence in the way you practice is so much more important. You have taught me a great deal about a Judaism, and I love following your channel. Greetings and love from Ontario, Canada. Marion, I really enjoyed your perspective on following Jewish law. I think when we do mitvzot and keep strict Halacha just because "G-d says that's what we have to do, so do it" it can become so rote that it loses it significance. As a Reform convert, I appreciate being able to chose what Jewish laws and customs I want to follow because it's my own choice to do so, which in turn makes it more much more meaningful to me.

hats off for making this video, it takes a lot of courage to look back at older content in a vulnerable and honest way! i myself don't feel comfortable doing that, and i think i miss on opportunities to grow bc of that. with that being said, i believe i lead a jewish life in a very particular way too, but most importantly with decisions based on STUDY. i think ppl are really condescending to assume that we simply roll the way we do bc we're slackers or something that - bc we're not. and it baffles me that ppl aren't as judgemental with other stuff. or do they really think that "eye for eye, tooth for tooth" was originally about financial compensation? of course not, and this is what has kept judaism alive until today, and will continue to keep it alive: our ability to adapt, reinterpret, change etc both as a community and individually.

Holy cow, I did this recently for a turkey recipe, and it was sooooooooo good. Yum! Also, I don’t see how you don’t dress modest. Your outfits are always super nice and modest. I think you’re definitely fine. If anything, please make a video of where you shop for clothes, because your pieces are always so beautiful. I'm SO with you - wasn't raised kosher and never met a shrimp I didn't love. I do my best to serve kosher style for the school lunches, and if the rabbi's coming over, just so I don't totally offend a swath of my friends in our Jewish school community (many also do not keep kosher). Hi Marion! Being a Jewish lady living in Tokyo, where the community is so small and food challenges are huge, I had to adapt my being Jewish to the environment I’m at! I completely agree with your views regarding evolution and I also think that since throughout our history, the Jewish people history, we were forced to move locations, it seems impossible to me that people didn’t try to adapt and incorporate Jewish practice and traditions/beliefs with what they had available to them. I’m a mizrahi Jew of Yemeni background and our food, music, and even liturgy are different than an ashkenazi Jew from Poland for example. To each their own, but it seems to me that some of these extremely orthodox groups refuse to see, accept and acknowledge something that in my opinion has been a part of being Jewish since the beginning... our capacity to adapt and incorporate. Same as you, I do what feels right to me...I don’t completely shomeret shabbat or completely shomeret kashrut, but I try to be the best Jew I can be especially when it comes to mitzvot such as different ways of tzedakah, for example. On this, I believe that masorti has the right ideas and that’s how I identify myself as well. About the chicken on the floor, I guarantee you that most people wouldn’t have thrown it away. Three second rule, right? Lololo Congratulations on your channel and thank you so much for your great videos

I try my hardest to be kosher (I dont eat meat which makes it easier) but its difficult living in a part of the UK with limited access to kosher shops and eateries. What I take from my Rabbi's teaching is that intention is key, as long as we are trying, and continuing to learn how to grow and improve our relationship with judaism, that's enough! He also says that we shouldn't let the fear of not being perfect stop us from actually doing it- an imperfect jew is still a jew! And being kosher, but not perfectly, is better than not being kosher at all! 💕🤷‍♀️

I agree as a Christian. I was raised Catholic, but 28 years ago yesterday I became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints....so people follow our Word of Wisdom pretty good with no trouble, others struggle or they might follow another commandment easier than another, etc. We're all people and most try to do their best. God knows our intention and struggles. As far as laws given in ancient times, I wonder if God was just giving the law today would it be the same.??

The more of your videos I watch, the more I see we have in common. I'm Conservative flavor, too. I'm kosher, but not to the Nth degree. (Any kosher at all was a challenge when we were homeless!) If I have a choice between certified kosher and certified organic meat, organic wins. Other ways work for other people, but my way works for me. It's important for our communities to be inclusive. If other people are being judgemental, that says something about them, not you! Keep up the good work, lady!

Loved the way you said about the chicken. I have done this with foodstuffs as it would be wasteful to throw it away. Also I had read (but don’t know how true it is) that if you pick the item up within a few seconds it will be fine. Love your easygoing attitude; don’t change.

Do whatever you are comfortable with, no one else’s opinion matters. Some people are just mean and want to make others feel bad about themselves. Everyone thinks their way is the right way or they wouldn’t follow that path. My opinion is that as long as you are devoted to what you believe and strive to follow it then you are doing right. I love your videos.

When you mentioned the chicken-gate commotion, I thought of a story my father once told me. He had heard this story while serving in the South Pacific during WWII, and I believe it had happened somewhere in Asia. A dignitary held a state dinner for other leaders in the region. The dignitary's wife was serving as hostess for the occasion. All guests were seated at the table, and kitchen staff began bringing the meal. The main course was a huge chicken (possibly a capon) festooned on a platter. Suddenly the server tripped, and the chicken fell from the platter to the floor. The server picked it up and put it back on the platter. With great aplomb and a knowing look, the hostess told the server to bring the other chicken from the kitchen. The server returned to the kitchen, washed the chicken, put it back on the platter with the festooning, and off he went back to the gathering. There was no "other chicken".

I love your ideas about kashrut so much! For me it’s more important to fulfill the spirit of the law, rather than the “letter” of the law, I also think we shouldn’t blindly follow the interpretations of others. We have a personal responsibility to wrestle with Halacha and find the ways it fits best in our lives. & I also think that the Torah is a tree of LIFE. a living thing grows, changes, and adapts to its changing surroundings. And what humanity needs now, I truly believe, is the LOVE of hashem, and not the fear of being sinful.

Another great video! Most don't know about Reform Judaism, for example (which I'd say my family is), and they judge based on what they have heard about Judaism in general. Plus keeping 100% perfect kosher or Orthodox is very difficult in modern society, unless you live in an Orthodox community or a kibbutz! My better half is from Israel, and I've basically converted from Episcopalian. He told me quite a lot of interesting info about the... let's say... economics and "financial incentives"... about some rabbis marking some products kosher.😒

Like you, we're not a hundred percent kosher either, but we've settled on almost-Kosher. Most importantly, we think about the values and meaning behind what we eat. My husband doesn't care about mixing meat and dairy, but I do, so I use Miyoko's Vegan Cultured Butter with meat meals. It doesn't have a hechscher, but it's totally plant based, and I feel better about it than chemical margarines bc it's plant based. It's really yummy and very close to butter. You might like it! I find separating meat and dairy pretty easy now, and it's become second nature. We're also not shomer Shabbos but make huge changes to our routines and *mostly* avoid technology. And we always do or Friday night rituals. It's a great reset button for our week. I'm so glad to see another Conservative Jew who's so passionate about the Conservative Movement. Although we are a halachic movement, we also live in modern, changing times, and I find it an exciting challenge to view all those changes through a halachic lens. I also respect that ultra Orthodox Jews don't change with the times so that older traditions and customs are preserved. I think it's important for all of us to be in those different roles as Jews in the world, making the respective contributions that we are meant to. And so Conservative Judaism is perfect for me as well. Thank you for sharing our perspective!

I think your great and some people are so critical. Honestly, everyone has their own walk with G-d and everyone is on a journey. For someone to criticize someone else for their walk, is rather rude. I totally understand that some will really be offended, but they have to realize that everyone's walk is different and growing. For me, I am more conservative, but I don't go on about an orthodox views. That view is between them and HaShem. Please people be kind a respect each other's views. Your not telling people to change, you are just sharing what you do. Your being honest. That is admirable and wonderful! I bet if I shared what I believe everyone would freak, that is why I don't share.

What my parents did was teach us about both cultures and religion and let us choose. My conversion rabbi asked me how I intended to practice Kashrut. At that time I did not have a local source of kosher meats, I used to eat organic, free range, humanely farmed types. I found that as time went on I didn’t like meat. I found it too much to keep meat and dairy kitchen separately. I transited into a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I check my cheese purchases to be sure it is made with vegetarian rennet and not animal rennet ( or has a kosher label); it’s hard to find kosher cheese sometimes. Don’t really like most vegan cheeses, although I keep trying vegan choices. Many vegetarian don’t even know aged cheeses are traditionally made with the gastric juices of a cow.

Nearly every Jewish friend I've had is a member of Reform Judaism and several will have bacon and shrimp. I cook at one couple's house every time we have band practice there, and they have separate dishes, cutting boards and knives, but I make these cheddar garlic London broil melts that I offered to skip the cheese. I got the look of death for even suggesting it! In contrast, I was raised Catholic (I'm not now), and my family never observed the Friday fasts during lent and only my younger sister and I went to mass every Sunday. I think every faith has it's spectrum of adherence to holy law. If you're pure of heart in what you do, my opinion is that you're fine

1. I went to school for Video Production and worked for TV for over 15 years. I realized a long time ago that people have blooper moments all of the time (even professionals), in which case, the viewer can assume what's going on, but they will not know how the final product turned out unless you tell them - you could have scrapped the food and made a new batch and no one would have been the wiser. Some people are way too critical without realizing what goes into making videos...especially videos that are posted for the public to see. 2. I respect Orthodox Judaism, but it's not the way I live either, and I will even watch other channels that are Orthodox just because I enjoy watching Jewish channels in general for recipes, crafts, education, etc., etc., but I relate more to your channel. While I may not do some things that others do and vise versa, I strongly believe that we are NOT meant to judge others, and therefore I accept everyone as they are, regardless of whether they are Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and/or none of the above. You have been completely transparent and stated how you live your Jewish life on multiple occasions, even explaining the way other Jewish people may do certain things (for those who are curious to know about Judaism), taking care to be thorough in your explanations, and even having your Rabbi make guest appearances for more detailed discussions. You keep it real; therefore, you are still one of my favorite channels (even when I am too busy and cannot watch KZbin all the time 😁).
