- It was time to add a Baitcaster to our collection. To stay budget friendly in setting up two rods we went with the Abu Garcia Black Max Baitcaster reel. It performed really well and I have nothing bad to say about it. I hope to get out on the water soon to record some catches! I also demonstrate how to spool a new baitcaster with braided fishing line.

Bought that reel the other day at Walmart I put it on the Ugly Stik GX2 rod hopefully I picked the correct rod for it.

For sure, great rod to combo with a bait caster.

You could probably get away with that but the GX2 is a spinning rod. Baitcaster rods are different, you’d essentially be installing a baitcaster reel on upside down if you try putting it on a spinning rod. One way to tell the difference between between rod types is a spinning rod will have larger eyelets on the bottom that get smaller going upward. Baitcaster rods have small eyelets all the way through the length of the rod

Does using the holes keep it from slipping so you don’t need a mono backing ? Also would you tie mono through the holes as well or just wrap around ?

Yes threading through the holes keeps it from slipping. If using mono I would still thread through the holes.

You’ll have an easier time with it if you leave about an 1/8 of an inch gap left in the spool instead of filling it all the way.

What size line would you recommend for all around use. I live in North Alabama and we are blessed with all kinds of fish. We have Guntersville lake, Weiss Lake and the Tennessee river and on top of all of that we have numerous lakes and ponds.

I'd suggest 10lb braid for sure, it's thin enough for longer casting with lighter baits but strong enough to fight a bass. You are definitely in a sweet spot for fishing!

I haven't had issues with it lower but I can definitely see it being a problem at times. I'll still take a lower one than none!

Only thing I personally think you did wrong here is the amount of line you put on the reel I think you out to much to were it may cause problems but other than that great vid
