I agree that the blackmax is really good and that this is unbiased, but people also are subjective to their own opinion so if they think that an expensive real is better than that is their opinion.
@andrescruz94484 жыл бұрын
Well what's expensive to you for a reel? $250+ $500+? While every price bracket has something for everyone, just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it's "over-rated" or "impractical". Overpaying for something can be just as foolish as underpaying. I've fished reels that I enjoyed and that were amazing (for the price) but my expectations were also realistic (again, for the price). The more I pay the more I expect out of anything. I think this is an example of a $40 reel exceeding expectations and being a pleasant surprise but it's a bit of a stretch to say it's better than a $300 dollar reel.(also doesn't make sense to compare things so far apart in price). Being a budget snob is worse than being a rich snob...

Yes! Love the black max! Little tip I found out is order you some spool hi-speed bearings to put in your black max and it’s a flawless reel. Bearings only $15. Performs like a $200 reel easily

My first baitcaster was a black max, it's what I learned on. I found them to be good for 2 seasons, however I never took care of them. That was quite a few years ago and quality could have changed. I recently purchased 2 more just to use for trolling specific rigs on my kayak and they've worked just fine. I really prefer the Revo SX but now at almost 4 times the cost it doesn't make sense. Even if 1 or 2 max's fail you've still got 2 more at around the same cost. I agree with you, they really are a great budget reel.

I love mine , I’ve had it for 2 years and it still works so well, it’s on my most used combo with a savage gear rod and it feels amazing! I give the bearings regular oil and the gears well greased and it casts a LONG way and can Handel fairly light baits very well!

I agree with your thoughts! I’ve used Black Max reels a lot! Great bang for the buck! Along those lines I’ve stumbled on another great reel which is a Piscifun Torrent. Same price point s the Black Max, but I like the Torrent for the power handle that it comes with. Also the Torrent is smooth, casts well, and has a 7 to 1 gear ratio availability. Bottom line is you don’t have to spend a fortune on your equipment.
@willshaneswearingen2 жыл бұрын
The problem with torrent reals is they just don't last, lovem have 6 and they are all starting to have the same problem... screeching on cast and a rub grind noise when retrieving.
@workingman97452 жыл бұрын
@@willshaneswearingen they may just need cleaning and oiling. Sometimes the screetching is caused by grit or grime underneath the spool knob. Just my opinion.

Man I'm so glad you did this video! I have had a Abu Garcia Black Max for about a year and a half its what I learned on to fish with a baitcaster. I love it still and it still works great I've got better with it and like you said I can cast farther with it than my more expensive reels. Some people really bash them but I have had a great time with mine. I tried the Silver Max but I don't own one and it seems nice but I think the Black Max is still smoother. I also bought a Diawa CR80 for $50 and it is nice in fact the Abu Blaxk Max and the Diawa CR80 seem to be the reels I use the most. I just got the Diawa Tatula and am looking to give it a try this weekend. However like I mentioned the Black Max and CR80 and what I am always picking up to use. Had 2 of these, they were the much older probably original ones. The first one the worm gear gave me problems from day 1 but I was able to mod it to work. The other the spring for the thumb bar broke but after like 2 years of use. Im a firm believer in you get what you pay for but look at it this way, this was 2 reels that got me through 2 years, I've had $150 lews reels take a crap within the first year. Fast forward to recent years and I mostly buy all shimano and diawa but I fish alot and its my main hobby now. Back then I bought $40 reels because my dirt bikes and other hobbies needed most of my money. Love the videos Johnny

And just to ad, having the problems with these reels gave me a reason to learn to work on them. Gave me a good understanding on how they work. At 31, I've finally taken my first step into the world of angling; bought a Black Max 7'0" medium/heavy combo on the recommendation of coworkers who fish quite a bit. Started out getting a ton of lash and detangling birdsnests, but having spent time dialing in the tension and brakes - and probably improving my cast over the past week of multiple pond visits - it's already become a real pleasure to use. Now to work on the catching part!

These are tips that beginner and journey level fisherman can really use. Instead of pouring money into Tier 1 or 2 level reels, you can save money and not lose performance. I have a Bass Pro Johnny Morris Platinum reel that I loved but it didn’t stand up over time like my Black Max’s or my Silver Max’s. My favorite rods are Walmart Lew’s Hank Parker rods. Again, really good performance at a great price. Not specialty rods but great every day stand the test of time rods.

Just picked this up last week. I'm new to fishing still, so it was a very nice upgrade from my $12 walmart spinning rod I had before it. Still learning how to cast it though. My accuracy improved greatly along with much less backlash after adjusting it properly to the lure being used. I just need to improve my casting distance, but other than that, the black max has been great so far. I also got the 2 year protection plan for $6 since it is my first Baitcaster.

I just ran across this and I have to say I agree. The Black Max in a much better casting reel that the Silver Max and I have owned both. I have Abu Garcia 55ooC3's, Orra's, and I use Quantum, and Shimano. I love the high end Quantum reels ans the Shimano DC's (I have the SLX and Curado's). I am a little more accurate with some of the higher end reels and for me they cause less fatigue after a day on the water, but for casting distance, the Black Max will hold its own with them. They are great reels to put on a rod you don't use much and just don't want to have a lot of money tied up in it, or all of them. I have back and neck issues and the higher end stuff helps me. If not for back and neck problems, I would throw the Black Max on almost everything and use the money saved for better rods. In 2021 the Black Max runs $55.00 unless you can find it on sale.

I have the entire abu walmart line, revo, pro max, winch, black max. I'm happy with my black Max's I dont have complaints for the price. While I was testing all these reels out I fished a light crankbait rod and a worm with no weight on my baitcaster with 8lb power pro. There was definitely a difference casting light line and lures with the revo, and a shimano slx I have, and they were way better at casting light gear and not getting backlashes. I'm able to get more distance and have more confidence with the slightly better reel. When I need to make long cast or fight the wind, or fish heavy cover I grab my better 100 dollar range reels, but most of the time my black Max's are fine there is a place for them.

However I love the action on the rod it's a medium heavy and can really Chuck 3/8 Oz Plus lures it's not great on quarter ounce and under weighted lures. My black max combo wrangles unruly Bass back to shore or the boat skipping them across the water I love it I guess I could play around with them in the water and I don't know if it's that fair to them to do so I catch them and let them go as quickly as possible Great video great real I'm thinking of stepping up to Shimano cayas or SLX for my next reel and keep my Abu Garcia blackmax for anyone who wants to try big casting when they go fishing with me keep up the great work Aloha from the Great Lakes

I've got two of the old blue max , yep , on cheap Ali express rods (about 15 dollars I'd guess) , I agree , they fire out 4 gram ( I think that's around 1/8 ounce ?) waay out . And I tried pitching short cast - pretty good (I'm crap at casting) , and roll and pendulum casting too . The Blue max has a weird feature - there is a switch that stops the thumb bar clicking back in when the handle is turned. Mine are loaded with 25lb braid as there are rocks/tree branches everywhere I fish .

I’m glad you mentioned needing to do this. I’m not accustomed to thumbing the spool very much or needing to as I normally use Higher end Diawa Steeze/Tatulas SV/Tatula 200 I wanted to return the reels at first and decided to go find some reviews. Perhaps I should stick to using these for bombing heavier baits further out vs pitching light soft baits not too far from the boat. I paid $38+tax ea. Should I keep them?

Have an older Revo S and a BlueMax still putting in work. Oldest reel now is working on it's 11th year i think. Black Maxes were right around $40 bucks when i bought em, the ProMax i think i paid $80 for and the Lews comes in right around $100 but i picked two up on a 15% sale and had a gift card.

Have you tried doing a comparison of the black max reel vs the newer Max X reel???? They look somewhat similar. The Max X is smaller and the spool doesn’t seem as deep or at least not as wide. You mentioned how well they cast. I bought one after watching one of your videos to try and compare it to some of my others. The black max does make really long cast like you said in this video. I’m curious if the Newer Abu Garcia Max X cast as far and as good as the black max??? Just curious about your thoughts on the New Abu Garcia Max X since you have used the older ones quite a bit. Thank you
