Destiny 2 Lore - Season of the Chosen's narrative gets a lot more right than wrong (1st Impressions)

(copied from my twitter, but I wanted to post it here because it needs to be made clear that what I'm talking about here was a decision by Bungie, not an oversight). Before talking more I just wanted to touch on something that I've heard which affects one of my bits of feedback. I talk in my section of what was bad about the story of the returned strikes (Devil's Lair and SABER 2). I talked in this video about how I thought not changing anything would be a bad move because it would potentially confuse players because of chronology. Zavala in the Devil's Lair strike talks about the House of Devils with the same dialogue as he did 7 years ago. This is great nostalgia but it's terribly confusing for players now who might see this in the context of Destiny today as opposed to Destiny almost a decade ago. This is potentially undermining the major story beats of the current Destiny story on multiple fronts (If SABER is unchanged that is really going to confuse people about the Rasputin story). I'm bringing this up because I wanted to make 2 things clear: 1) I read somewhere that Bungie has stated that their intent with the returning strikes and raids is to have them "frozen in time." 2) I think that that approach isn't going to work. Players are already having some trouble grasping the narrative. This is unnecessary confusion that is just going to make the problem more entrenched. If this is Bungie's intention then they need to be louder about it... because even I didn't know this until I looked into it. Hopefully, this was a useful critique... I hope that it's possible to change some of this stuff in the future but I get that other bits and bobs need to take priority.

I also don't get not changing sepiks and saber, we have the new salvation eliksni, what if they were a part of both strikes? and we got new lore that they got resurrected by the same way taniks has been resurrected for the past however many years? i think it would've been a nice addition which would also tie into the lore.

I just makes me think why even bother bringing them back at all, if they're not going to be integrated. AND, why did they bother re-doing Omnigul, if they weren't gonna do it for the others? For the New Lights that don't pay to play, necessarily? That just seems backwards.

I feel like they could’ve easily just not put dialogue in the strikes, if they want to be lazy. Then, for the “Devil’s” Lair, the flavor text could just be something like, “Hunt down one of House Dusk’s new Prime Servitors.” And they could change Sepiks and the Devils Baron’s names. Then Fallen S.A.B.E.R. could be about the Fallen using the Warmind vault as a fortress, since Rasputin is no longer there to defend it. And they could have the Shank controlling all the tech, giving an explanation for the vault being active....

For the returning D1 Strikes, I get a lot of the criticism for being an old Strike, but in context of the Narrative, with a bunch of the in-game lore that ties the Game mechanics together, I think that with our use of Simulations, Meditations and even accessing other realities with our light, the may explain why we could do all of this.

That was most probably a propaganda move, she told him that his hero and Idol shouldn’t be Acrius who took the sun. Instead she told him that those who sacrifice themself for their leader are true heros. She just wants warriors that die willingly for her without questioning, fighting even if there is no chance of victory. That’s actually something every great strategist in the past of humanity did. It shows that Caiatle is an intelligent and clever leader.

not just that, she's clearly a good leader who will do what he takes to survive, she only told zavala to bow because she'd be seen as weak otherwise. she wouldn't have done it if she had more of a choice. plus she freed all the psions, any that remain are there of their free will.

It's not like any of the characters in-game can read the gear's lore like we can. I haven't read this lore in particular however, so maybe it says something like "footage found playing on a cabal monitor" at the beginning or something.

When he talked about Caital, I thought about how she seems to have some honor to her (or maybe it's the valuing strength part of her) but she had the chance to kill two very important people to the human race and in the Guardian ranks, but instead she let them go and wanted to meet, at least Zavala, on a proper battlefield

She was in a room with a titan, who could wrestle with cabal centurions while LIGHTLESS. 7 weapons ponted at him at this point would do nothing, and Caiatl knows it. She values strength above all... and she knows that in that room, zavala stands tall abou anyone else. Note that she doesn’t loose respect for him even when he denies her... she still acknowledges him with his military charge. People need to give zavala more credit. One in one, no regular anthropoid being could contest the top ranks of Guardian elite. For christ’s sake, we’re the zombie SEAL team 6... with space magic.

The whole "frozen in time" argument for the old strikes is completely lost when the models are changed and new enemy types are added. That's like if I said I'll return your car just how I left it, and come back with it painted an entirely different color. If they want a "frozen in time" strike just use the old models and leave out the new enemy types. They just need to decide rather than this in-between of old and new.

So many times they bring in talks of fighting different fallen houses, yet we fight fallen in House Dusk clothing…it seriously can’t be that hard to pull the House Devils assets foreword for the strike. It completely ruins the immersion and takes away that magic attention to detail that I like about this game. This strike is not the only example of this, and I’ve held this thought since the beginning of D2. I would rather they don’t put this content in the game at all rather than go against the narrative. Navota was a great example of doing it well. I don’t really have an issue with reissued content, but this is not the quality storytelling and attention to detail I know and expect from Bungie.

there is indeed a combination of crow and saladin during the battlegrounds. it's really interesting because it shows the huge difference between these two characters. Crow wishes for some sort of talk with the cabal, peace perhaps whereas Saladin is determined to attack them, considering them a threat and nothing more. this stuff is excellent as it incorporates the large cast that destiny has.

All it would take to fix devils lair is adding a few new voice lines, change old ones that are semi- relevant and just remove ones that arent. For example: Ghost: "didnt we kill Sepixs? Twice? And didnt the house of devils get disbanded" Shaw Han: "they aren't devils. As far as we can tell they're exiles trying to rebuild old houses and they're starting by attempting to recreate the house of devils prime servitor. Shut them down before they get it fully operational."

I just went through and had a look at all the story and it's amazing. The Calus stuff, and the torobatl and Caiatl stuff is great. It really humanised the cabal for me and I feel really sorry for them. And Calus is such a good unique villain!! Although whilst it's cool that bungie wanted the 2 returning strikes to be frozen in time and it's cool nostalgia. I would have much preferred it to have been updated for the current D2 story. I mean there are some prime servitors that have some really interesting story going on that I'd have really liked in the devil's layer strike in place of Sepiks prime. Its cool but I'd have liked something done with both of them like with last season's strike. Other than that this season is great so far.

I really like how a lot of the lore tabs for weapons/lore books tell so much from Cabal perspective. Calling the Guardians "the smallmen", "corpses" and such almost makes me feel scared for the Cabal. To them, we're killing machines that resist their greatest tool - killing. All of the lore about Cabal politics, the chosen Cabal on the battlegrounds, Caiatl's upbringing and that are just really juicy and make you really see things from the Cabal's perspective.

It did, but all the DLC in D1 required you to have all prior DLC if I’m not mistaken, and there wasn’t a way to miss content unless you purposefully skipped it, unlike in D2 with the seasons, which I have missed most of and had to watch Byf’s videos to catch myself up.

They could have completely avoided the issue by just having Shaw voice maybe 2 minutes of new dialogue explaining that there are Fallen from the old House of Devils trying to resurrect a damaged servitor. Boom, done, no more problems. The fact that they didn't do that is just baffling to me. I'm all for having more content, more content is always good, but if the caveat is that the new content makes no sense and feels completely out of place, I don't know if I want it. It reeks of laziness to me. They're already recycling content and they won't do the bare minimum to make it fit into the current setting.

When I finally found the strike after looking for the normal version I loaded in and was completely thrown of the the dialogue one top of that what the hell bungie i thought we were getting and expansion to the cosmodrome but the expanded areas are only available for the strikes. I disagree man. The old version of the strikes are optimal and strapping some generic new name on there isnt going to make players engage with their story. Omnigul is infinitely more interesting than Navota, whos just a generic wizard. A reject at that. Its pretty clear strikes are a time capsule and dont occur in the modern day. what, are we still killing Hashladun in season of the chosen in the shadowkeep strike? No of course not. Players arent that dumb

The easiest thing they could have done for the old strikes is say that the house of devils had a resurgence, maybe bring back the old devil’s model, and rename the bosses. And have ghost comment on the devil’s return. If they wanted to go even farther, (let’s be honest they probably won’t) maybe add a new strike where we take out the devil’s Kell and destroy the house of devil’s a second time.

Personally, I would have preffered if Lair of Devils had been changed to it being about mithraxx, trying to Destroy a splinter group of the house of dusk, and maybe recruiting the last true devils, the ones who had been betrayed first by siva, and then by eramis, and that could be a neat addition to the story, maybe even add a note along the lines of: "That is sepiks the second, And if it is returned to power then the devils will, as they have done so many times, cheat death." Plus add to the concept that if this happens what remains of rasputin, fragile as it may be, will be destroyed. I like playing with rasputin now, as a weakened, Bitter old Artifical Intelligence I know that it would be hard, but even a little would have been really nice! Byf has some stuff on that, And I agree it would work a lot better than just what I think is supposed to be: "Remember when we did that? Do you remember guardian? Wow that was cool."

Notably, those who are infected with Savathun’s Song have been adjacent to a spying event from Savathun. Shaxx in the Traveler’s Chosen lore tab, and now Crow from Hakwmoon’s lore tab. Coincidence or something more?

iirc for someone to become 'infected' with the song they need to hear it from someone else sing it. In this case We heard it from either the Shadowkeep Title screen or Eris, Osiris heard it from Eris, or us, and it's more than likely that Crow heard it from Osiris.

I don’t even hear dialogue in the sepiks strike I haven’t heard any for the 29 NFS I have done of sepiks(I’m on Xbox) so where is the dialogue? So I didn’t even find that problem because I thought they was no dialogue

I was really surprised to see Saladin getting some time in the spotlight. Hopefully this means new idle dialogue in the tower during Iron Banner (it's been four years, we know that the iron lords would've avenged the attack on the tower). Personally, I hope this might be leading into a new Rasputin/SIVA themed season, because I think it would be really cool as a lead-in season to Witch Queen. Rasputin is the most powerful AI known to us, and I think it would be awesome to see him powered up again, making moves in this game of 5D chess that Savathun always seems to be playing, and his actions during that season unveil some critical weakness or flaw in Savathun's plans, which we can exploit to defeat her in Witch Queen

As a returning player, I have spent hours trying to catch up on the story and it's all been thanks to the community. There has been no help from Bungie to make this easy on me. And the story is amazing, but it has taken so much work to catch back up. And most people won't do what I did.

I love the thousand foot conceptual view of the H.E.L.M., it is thematically cool. I would love to see it built up for massive season or even expansion (year) long war fronts where as guardians complete bounties, run the raid and dungeons, run the seasonal activities it builds up a counter that allows each weekly update to show the community their "impact" on the world.

Not trying to be a bungie apologist, but I'm actually ok with the strikes. Strikes have always felt non-canon outside of when we have to do them inside the story (like the europa strike). It's similar to the crucible maps that are on planets no longer available. I'm fine if they're the same strike, as long as it means we're getting a lot more strikes for the playlist. Most of the new lights i talk to barely understand the story and I'd much rather have more content, I don't think we'd be getting a 3 strikes added this season if bungie had to remaster the old strikes in the same vein as the omnigul strike. I completely understand the messed up lore in this situation, but as a player I'm overjoyed to see some more content added, regardless of context.

Agree with that last part heavily, getting more of these transmissions like what Osiris had in Zavala’s office last season would be great. These are things usually left to lore books and they really need to start putting more of the lore books into the game as opposed to just reading them

One little detail I find interesting about Caital is that she ultimately seems to have the same flaw that Calus did but in a different way, namely their shared obsession with Tradition (albeit of a more violent sort for Caital), and how Caital is so obsessed with the Tradition of Proving that we can take advantage of it to lure out and kill her would be War Counsellors because she **refuses** to let them back down from a challange issued in the traditional way.

I said this on Reddit last night but I just wanna say how much I loved the transition from hunt to chosen. So far the transition from last season to the next genuinely feels like the “evolving world” in a way I hadn’t felt for a long time. Crow and Osiris feel just as important, Saladin’s return feels perfect for a war based season, it’s great. So far I think these 2 seasons are going to do fantastic with making the story of Sol feel like it’s growing and ramping up rather than going on a 3 month long side quest.

Your channel is the only reason I know what's going on in the destiny storyline anymore, I don't play it cuz I don't have the DLCs I still play D1 to this day but I love the storyline of D2.I've found it hard to get into the game now after so long of not ever playing it so I just haven't gotten into it but because of your channel I know what's going on in the storyline and the lore I thank you for that.

I took a year out of destiny 2, came back for about a months, took another couple months break and when I came back just after the beginning of last season I was so confused and felt completely alienated from the game. Suddenly Saint-14 is treating me like his best mate and my Hunter is standing there like 'who are you?' Honestly I had to get filled in by a couple of my clanmates who had taken shorter breaks or who had played all along as to what I had missed. I just really hope this is the start of the Destiny Bungie team creating run-on storylines otherwise we're going to have more people coming back to the game briefly then leaving because they can't get a good enough feel for the game

I’d be “happy” if for the sepiks strike they returned the splicers in a way like “while you were on Europa, disturbing reports from a certain colony ship in the cosmodrome say they’ve seen splicer loyalists roaming the area. We’ve seen what one SIVA outbreak can do. Get in there, take this splinter out, and remind these fallen why they’re underground” and then have the overseer comment how the splicers must have stayed hidden, and picked up some of Kell’s Scourge equipment when they raided the black armory vaults or how the devils made a deal with eramis before her demise, and now they’ve gone back to trying to make a grasp at power with what little siva they have left in a desperate push. Then when you see Sepiks on SIVA again have whomever be like “Why do they keep reviving THIS servitor?” Or “I see they can’t think of new tricks. Guardian, you know what to do.” It gives context, loose reasoning to exist in D2 timelines, and jabs at the content recycling. Still beats the same thing as year 0 in year 7(?) with no change, despite being a time capsule. Make it relevant while maintaining the essence.

Hers how I view the reprised devils lair the boss is a false sepiks a prime dusk servitor built into sepiks shape and house dusk is finding the actual history of the fallen with the devils and kings in the cosmodrome and attempt to be like them but fail in the end

100% on the previously on!! I came back to Destiny recently, the last time I played was before Forsaken. Apart from Cayde dying and the pyramids turning up I had no idea of the story. I had to spend hours looking things up before I could play Beyond Light so I knew what was going on! I had no idea what would be relevant and what wouldn't. But luckily for myself I love lore so I dove in. My friends on the other hand didn't go to KZbin to catch up, just had what was from the game and lost interest in the story since they had nothing backing it up. And it's even worse for new players. I would love if they did an animated graphic novel to fill in the story of the main game and for each season.

My thoughts, Drip feeding is painful. I understand that for the destiny community it’s better, the community will complain either way, if they release all the content people will complete it in a day, if it’s drip feeding they’ll complain about not enough content in a certain week. I don’t have any solid solutions, but my only thought is, take longer to make a season make a season longer so that there is more content, instead of not much every 90 days. Give the devs more time to make better content. I don’t really know want in talking about as you can tell by my name I don’t know a lot, just I’d rather not be starved I’d rather have plenty to do over a longer time.

I’d actually not mind Devil’s Lair and (assuming that it’s had the same treatment) Fallen Saber if they put in a tiny bit more effort to remodel to fallen to being their old colors and passing it off as a ‘flashback’. I think the colors and models would be enough contextualization to inform as such. I mean I’m gonna be honest here, it’s pretty nice to see Sepiks return along with Sepiks redux, just wish the strike fit in more narratively.

Not only it has a recap episode right before the finale, but EVERY SINGLE EPISODE had a "Previously on Avatar:" moment, mainly the events that happened before an episode that were going to be brought up again in said episode

Byf, continuity clearly isn't Bungies priority right now, they literally removed 2/3's of the guardians voice cast and consider it such a small deal they didn't even comment on it. They're clearly hard at work getting enough stable content into D2, and I can't say I disagree with that approach.

Counterpoint: Navota was utilized as part of the new light quest for new players and changing the context was needed. Almost every strike in D2 we engaged with for the first time as part of the relevant narrative when they were introduced. The only exception to that I can think of was Festering Core. The additions of Sepiks and Saber are unchanged in their context because they were not added as activities that we engage with as part of the seasonal narrative and therefore can stand apart because they only exist to serve as additional content for the strike playlist.

I have to say, i love that Osiris gets to have a big part to play as an advisor now that he has lost Sagira. But wouldn't that give Ikora a more hands-on kind of deal as the warlocks representative in the vanguard? I feel like she has been very passive for a long time! A small detail that I have to praise is the lore included in the new gear. These details allow us to see things from the point of view of the Cabals, it is very interesting how they see the guardians as formidable and almost invincible warriors but they still fight us. This puts them in a sympathetic light, which did not happen with the House Salvation.
