Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the new raid in the Final Shape gives us some awesome set pieces. Salvation's Edge is a raid worthy of the ending to the 10 year Light and Dark Saga in almost every respect. The Witness is an amazing boss, the lore of some of the encounters is incredible. But there is one thing that's missing and that's the lore books.

I think you're spot-on about Verity but honestly my first read was to take it even further. The Witness is combining Light and Dark to create shapes, and in Verity we demonstrate that we can also do this. Maybe not to the degree that the Witness can, but it further cements the idea that we are embracing concepts and exhibiting powers that no one - and the Witness especially - predicted we could or would. The Witness wants to distill us to one core element - the 2D shape of the Guardians being isolated. We not only reject that shape, but we embrace a greater one and literally ascend to another dimension as we escape. People love to ask "Why didn't the Witness just ___?" as they do about every raid boss but the entire point of the campaign, made explicit in Verity, is that the Witness CANNOT JUST. We are playing on its level now. That power isn't the Witness' power, it's just... a power that exists. We take it for ourselves, and THAT is what enables us to directly confront the Witness and separate it from the Traveler.

I like to think the Herald is actually Chelchis. We know chelchis was the greatest Kell, and probably the most valiant of the eliksni warriors. Its not hard to imagine that the witness maybe pulled the same stuff with him that he pulled with us, offering us godhood above the final shape. Maybe Chelchis actually took the deal, and became the witnesses herald of finality.
@redfalcon8062
@redfalcon8062 3 ай бұрын
It probably is Chelchis. It couldn't be Taniks cause he doesn't really look like em. And by reading the gun and the Adept gun's lore, it seems like Chelchis was also on Riis as well when the Traveler left. I knew he stood up to Oryx I think. And the Adept version quote says "The Hunger Comes." It feels like he was willing to give up his life in search for power or something.

I could gush all day about Verity and what an incredible encounter it is, and equally so about all the missed opportunities for lore and tying off (or expanding on) questions in the raid itself, so it brings me no end of satisfaction to hear a lot of what I've been thinking reflected in Byf's thoughts. But as a result of that, I'm somewhat left without much to contribute as a comment unless I wanted to get super specific and wordy about it. So instead, I'll just say that if the shape my guardian holds in Verity is indicative of my Final Shape, then given my diet and habits since the expansion dropped I'd say my final shape being a sphere is pretty fitting

I think the first encounter having a timer that gets extended by 'resonance' has more to do with the actual time it takes to change something complicated into a specific shape. The more complicated the shape, the more steps it takes to change it into the final shape. Like you changing the orientation of a rubik's cube as someone tries to solve it. So using paracausal resonance complicates the shape

If Lethe is one of the lore books, the name immediately reminds me of the entire idea of getting risen in the light, the gift of a second chance. Not sure if Bungie will actually do anything with it, but I found it kinda interesting. I do really miss the old direction of lore tabs tho. The little interactions in so many of the lore tabs today can be quite good sometimes, but it doesn’t compare to what’s contributed by things like the books of sorrow.

@kylesmith8602 the lore on this has already been established. The witness is an amalgamation of its species. The winnower did not create them. The precursors used the veil to become one & upon doing so they claimed to be the first knife.

I think it was just one of the precursors that was originally corrupted by darkness at the moment the traveller emerged and that led to them all being systematically assimilated into one being resulting in the witness! Like most diseases of the mind it starts with just one seed! Hence the witness reverting to saying I don't understand at it's defeat! The single mind that was originally corrupted being singled out and separated from the collective it had overwhelmed haha I waffle but yeah the witness was the first politician 😅

Some cool details I found: The shadows in Verity feel like a nod to the shifting class symbols you'll see when the game is loading (either in the bottom right or center of your screen) which Ive possible spent days of my lifetime watching. When you first see the monolith, it is obscured by a hologram of the Witness. In the final mission, this occurs again but only in the glass shards that cover your apparent view of the monolith. These kind a tease at the reveal that they are one and the same (beyond the fact that the monolith looks like the witness generally)

Something important about the line "Each child we save from the game, you again force to play." I don't think that's directed at us. The Witness's version of "saving" is pretty much just death, and while we do a lot, we don't generally return people to life. But the Traveler does. I feel like this line reads a lot better (and more interestingly) if directed *at* the Traveler instead of us. Implies a lot of interesting things about how "Gods forged us both." if that's the case: The Witness isn't the Winnower, but I don't think the Traveler is the Gardener either, especially with the lore we've gotten from its perspective.

I don’t think you understand what resonance is, because if stasis is where our mind lingers, and strand is what connects our minds together - resonance is the patterns that persist from person to person. Instead of the path least traveled, it chooses the path most traveled because that is the most understood and using understanding as a weapon by manipulating expectations and future telling.

RE: the lack of lore -- this is a really important thing for a game and setting like this. Look at a franchise like Warhammer 40k -- they *constantly* create these little bits of lore that gives them fodder for later stories and even more lore. As an example, I just read the book Angron: the Red Angel. One of its principle characters is a warlord who was first mentioned in just a handful of lines of text back in *2003,* and this book came out like a year ago. The first Fabius Bile novel is based off of a single entry in an army rulebook about an army of insane noise marines shattering the towers of a space elf worldship. Meanwhile, look at World of Warcraft. Its stories have very frequently suffered from having little set up in lore because the lore of Warcraft is incredibly shallow and tends to be created as is convenient *right now.* Hell, they famously had an entire expansion centered around the afterlife when the afterlife had *never* really been teased or set up and it had a villain who was retconned to be behind *every bad thing that ever happened* because they clearly had no idea what they were doing and making things up as they went. Adding lore is like planting seeds -- you can come back to harvest the ones that seem the most ripe for you to use later.
@ShadowC14

Honestly on the lore, they should retroactively add it in, either in the Master version or via Raid collectibles with some quest. And like, the lore doesn't even need to be so indepth, I wanna see something like we got from Oryx and the later book of Sorrows. Let us hear about all the other worlds the Witness made suffer, let us know how the Witness truly thought of his Disciples. Who are the dread and why are they the way they are. And best yet, what tellings of the Precursors and their feats before they became the Witness. I want all these things not from our perspective, but the Witness

Yeah my problem with the Final Shape as a whole is the lack of lore. The campaign was so character-focused (which was amazing of course) that we didn't get any answers besides what the veiled statues are. I mean this is supposed to be the biggest expansion ever that answers all the questions and we still don't know what ghost and the traveler are WHEN WE ARE IN THE TRAVELER. Hopefully they are just holding out for the true end of Destiny when we fight against the Winnower but it just feels like they are always moving the goal post narratively.
@aljazslemc9569

I'd say the opposite. I feel like we got way more voiced work describing ideas and concepts. Characters talking, guessing, speculating. A lot of what feels like lore conversations is instead recorded. A lot of interactions with Savathun, Luzaku. Interactions between Micah and Cayde. The Micah quests even go into old strikes, and use information we now have, to add new context and hint at the future. For someone playing exclusively content, and not reading the lore, they will find this expansion to be absolutely packed with tidbits, that would usually be relegated to lore entries gear. Im not saying, lore shouldn't be there, but i feel like the sheer amount of stuff to do, almost all giving you some sort of voiced context shouldn't be discarded. It also makes me think that if they were entirely done giving us lore, they'd put some interesting but more or less meaningless stuff about the precursors on the lore. Makes me think we will touch on more precursor stuff in the near future. It does also seem like Bungie wants us to focus on episodes. If they dropped an Unveiling 2 on us, thats all the lore nerds would be talking about. Who cares about some minor villan, give us the Winnower...

I wonder if the lessening of the lore could be simply because Bungie is still trying to figure out where to take Destiny in the next saga... The seeds planted in the lore throughout the years had the blessing of time and relative knowledge of where the game had to go to cook and pay off, and looking to some of the lore we HAVE got we see some hints at what's to come especially within the episodes, but if Bungie is really trying to start something completely new in the next saga I wouldn't be surprised if they need time to actually put something together. Granted, this is purely speculating on lore seeds for the future; there are still an infinite number of untold stories we could've gotten. I feel like we had a missed opportunity in the raid gear to learn more about the first collapse and how exactly the traveler fended off the Witness, more lore of the precursors, better understanding (or new hints) of the origin of the Taken, what the witness planned to do after the final shape alone as a god in a still universe, etc. But I guess time will only tell.

In my opinion: If the Traveler and Gardener are one and the same then the Veil and the Winnower are too the same entity. It was used to make the Witness and thus became, as it views itself, the First Knife. This would mean the Unveiling lorebook is an allegorical telling of how the Witness came to be, or even a retelling of a creation myth that the Witness' species once had and was used as a basis for its own creation using the Veil.

I think your points about the quantity of lore tabs is a little bit overstated in general. I agree there should have been more in this raid specifically for the same reasons you gave. This is the biggest bad. And this expansion has answered so many questions that it felt really out of place to not get it. Like, forget prior releases… compared to the Pale Heart generally, the lore in the raid is pretty sparse… But where I start to diverge from you is when it comes to other releases and their lore volumes. Something I have noticed over the years since Forsaken is that not only has the in game writing improved, but many many many things that would have been lore tabs in the past are generally written into the gameplay itself. Everything from the oh so infamous radio messages to full cutscenes. And in the missions themselves we get far more dialog, a lot of variable dialog, and even dialog that “reacts” to events of the season. For example in Seraph, after Clovis’s treachery is revealed all of the mission dialog changes. That is stuff that didn’t used to happen and instead would have been added to a lore tab or added as a book. So I do not believe we are getting less, I believe it’s more that the form of delivery has changed. And IMO for the better. With that said, it was a genuine let down that the raid items had so little lore. Especially given what the Witness was… the lore book being accounts from various “members” of the Witness is extremely clever. Why didn’t we just expand that idea out to all the armor and items? Even if it was just a bunch of different “member” statements about their perspective/story/etc. it would have been super interesting. Anyway, I really liked the video and I appreciate your well thought through and well articulated thoughts. It did not occur to me that Verity was a combat against our Final Shape, but that fits sooooo perfectly!

I feel like Bungie doesnt do as many lore tabs anymore not because they have nothing to say, but because not many players actually interact and read them. Might as well keep it short and sweet maybe condense some lore entries into less tabs and have more resources for other parts of the game. I know it sucks for people invested in the lore, but its the only logical explanation I can find. EDIT: It could also be that more about the Witness will come out as we progress through the episodes.

A strange and far fetched theory I had with the Harbinger of Finality, a taken fallen that has been giving the significant change in form and power similar to the dread or even possibly being some sort of disciple. What fallen would be that significant to gain such a position and people say it's taniks but it's not due to many pieces of evidence we have from beyond light and now. During the deep stone crypt the mission updates to "Defeat Taniks for good" this meaning that this we be the final stand of our deathless mechanical abomination known as Taniks, back into a corner with no one else to bring him back, like a wild rabid animal we put him out of his misery. Taniks is more machine than fallen, mechanical arms and all as we can see, the Harbinger has none of those on close observation, which debunks the idea of him being Taniks. As for who it might be is the crazy part that sounds like a long shot, I believe it being a fallen much older than that, one of great renowned and only mentioned in few pieces of lore dating back the D1, one who fell on his home of Riis, by the hands...of a King. I believe it to be once thought dead Kell of House Stone, Chelchis, a legend who stood before the end and his last words would echo out to us even. "Where is the great machine?" Like I said it's a far fetched theory but it's better than people assuming it's a dead meme

I understand Byf’s concern, but I also think this rant is a bit misguided specifically for TFS. If the raid had more lore tabs, I would want them to only flesh out missing detail, not present any new mysteries or plot threads (and Byf talks about that because it makes sense). Even without them, TFS was an awesome conclusion where most of the story was told in-game. Now we can look to the Episodes to introduce new mysteries and progress the story (as Seasons have always done.) Regarding lore in general, I think the real challenge for Bungie is going to be setting up villains that have minimal connection to the antagonistic forces we’ve already interacted with (or have, at least, confirmed the existence of, such as the Winnower). That way, they’ll feel fresh and interesting while also, hopefully, not being completely random or meaningless. The Nine are still shrouded in enough mystery to explore, but these Echoes are a great opportunity if they prove to be more than simple MacGuffins for villains to seek. Episode 1 feels like Season 24 in terms of gameplay, but I’m still excited to see how the story will change in Acts 2 and 3 because of the idea of a civil war in the Vex Collective-another largely unexplored area, until now. But whatever happens, as Bungie explores the Witness-less universe, I think they’ll write enough lore tabs about it.

one of my biggest issue with the story in this expansion is how it doesn't feel like an ending. avengers endgame and ff14 ended their saga without feeling like there is more, they closed everything on the last story and then started with a new saga. destiny didn't do that. instead it's just the same constant vague story leaving us questioning about the winnower which obviously is connected to the first saga. there's no way they just end the saga with the winnower hinted and moved on.

This is off topic but i think in this season maya sundresh is putting conciousness inside the vex milk. like human conciousness which would explain why they are fighting each other. a vex hive mind vs a colony of human conciousness. maybe i am reading too much into it but thats my two cents

Also, there's no way the Witness and it's sense of perfection weren't inspired by the Phyrexians and their "compleation" from Magic the Gathering. Verity is the most Elesh Norn room in the game.

I think a good reason why there wasn't as much lore in the raid is that bungie realizes that a nice portion of its players don't play the raids. Including myself.

I don’t think the witness crushed targe. I believe he blew himself up so that Zavala could escape. If you rewatch the cutscene, it looks like targe is overloading, ready to go nuclear almost.

Speaking of irony, the fact you yourself enter the witness a "God " and start messing up everything inside of it is the same thing the witness did to The Traveler, making you yourself a parasite to the witness.

Tbh that arena just looks repurposed from a raid that actually looked FANTASTIC.... Wrath of the machine. I can't say the way they've made all of TFS areas look (the hands and all that garbage) has made anything more enjoyable. Just a personal POV though

Would rather they put the lore into the game and the story being told, than to hid squirrel them away in lore tabs. The Final Shape is the first time in Destiny history I’ve felt like they were telling a cohesive story, that tied all the elements of the game together. I would rather play the story than read it. If we get less lore entries and more stories played, I think that’s better for everyone.

What really made no sense to me is the total lack of Pyramids. If the Spire is the Witness itself, then where is the infamous Black Fleet? 5 or 6 pyramids were sucked in around the Traveler when the Witness entered it's heart, where are they? Aside from the Essence, all of the Black fleet is unharmed and accounted for, where are they? Why didn't the Witness bring them with it and hold the line around the Spire? Why didn't it sick them on Sol? A Pyramid should have been another boss on the Raid, a massive, immovable obstacle of legend that we manage to overcome with our new abilities that hasn't happened, since Mara assumed Oryx form and suprised one. So dissapointing.

This has nothing to do with the topic I think but I always wonderer what happened to the ghosts when the traveller abandon the planet of their guardian, do they die ? I fild it strange that we've never fought an eliksni guardian for exemple because in my opinion it sounds against the travellerd attitude to just kill the ghost of all the guardians of his his previous chosen people

i just wanted to say, as a veteran guardian who has always played the game only for the actual gameplay, that YOU, my friend, have been able to get me involved into D2 and this marvelous universe even more than i was. Your understanding of the lore and your consequent sharing of it made me love this game even more than i did before and I'm sure this applies to a lot of people. Thank You, Byf, for giving us the chance to experiment such a wonderful game in a way that the common player doesn't always get to play. You are the Talkien of D2, a true appreciator of this game that has so much to offer other than the gameplay. You always did and are still doing a wonderful job by getting opeople to know that, behind the astonishing graphics and underwhelmingly satisfying gun play, this game has an entire "Lord of the rings"-like lore to be shared. Not long ago, in one of your videos, you said that your pourpose is "just" to tell stories. Well, dare I say that you are the best at it, and You are the reason many guardians look to this franchise in a completely different way. Keep up the good work, guardian, see you starside :D

Regarding your critique, people have always complained that you have to read in-game lore in order to understand the Destiny universe, so it looks like these people are getting what they want: less reading in a video game. I'm not saying that's right, but it does seem like your critique is something only lore nerds would care about. What are your thoughts on that?
