Three years ago I created 'YOU LOOK DISGUSTING', and shared my story with the world. Now I'm putting my career on the line to answer one very real, and very hard question... 'If we change the standards of beauty... do we change how we see ourselves?'

I'm in tears as well. I'm 32 and still have acne. Not as much on my face as I used to, but still. And I've got it on my neck, chest and back still, despite all kinds of treatments and countless appointments with dermatologists. I've only started accepting it 3 years ago, and now I don't wear foundation anymore. I'd been wearing it everyday since I was 13 and freaking out in situations that could remove it, like sports, pool, rain... I'm okay now, but I still can relate to the feeling shown by these women, because I had it for over half of my life. Strangest thing is, I know why they feel that way, I know the mechanism, but I look at them and think "they are pretty, though, it shows and yet they can't see it". It's easier to see that others are beautiful despite their "flaws" than think this about yourself.

I understand the points this minidoc is trying to put forward and applaud this attempt.....but you're right - most of these women, in spite of their skin issues, are in the generally accepted group called "objectively pretty or attractive". My point being that people who do not qualify for this exclusive group have a much harder time in life than these women who are basically "ok". I accept they have insecurities but they have no idea what life is like for someone whom makeup won't help at all......

Why do they have to be separated? If this is a video about beauty, BOTH men and women should be included, since both experience problems. They won't create a video about men, not now, not ever. They don't value men's emotional problems as much. These separate videos only divide men and women further away from each other rather than approaching it as a universal issue regardless of gender.
@Fiona-rr9ck
@Fiona-rr9ck 4 жыл бұрын
@@charl7346 because women's problems with body dysmorphia and the perception of beauty are much more severe and common than men's. Of course, a good amount of men have body image issues, but again, they're definitely not as bad as women's.

Why are people in the comments missing the point? I understand that men have higher suicide rates and they also suffer problems of anxiety and how they look etc etc. However this video is focused on beauty standards and the beauty industry. It is focused on the likes of make up and such. Please just watch the video and be inspired. If I was watching a video where they were addressing the issue the male face, I would not comment "Oh, girls go through that to". Or "Girls suffer more than guys". I would not comment anything along those lines. I would watch the video and be inspired. I would watch and understand the boys and their problems. So, men who are commenting "Men go through this as well" please just watch the video and understand the female mindset put on this video. I would do that for both the genders.

Ok, so feeling more inadequate due to media's misrepresentation of beauty or handsomeness is a human issue. None the less, I'd say the primary focus on being perfect IS aimed more frequently at females, in a way most men cannot really relate to or have to understand.

People without acne have no idea how demoralising it feels to wake up in the morning, and feel another painful spot appear....with the many that join it. I remember feeling so upset by my acne that I stopped eating, wouldn't sleep right and even stopped going to work for a small amount of time due to my acne insecurity. I use to look at acne free people and be in awe of their clear skin. I remember one incident where I sat next to a young guy at a bus stop and looked at his skin thinking, "why is my skin not that clear? Why I'm I like this?". I'm cured of acne now. I met my husband when it had cleared up and I've told him how awful it was to have acne. It's funny but all my work friends said they never realised my acne was there when I had terrible big ones! It makes me realise now that no one noticed it! If you have acne please don't become depressed...its only temporary...like everything in this world. I saw it as a learning curve in my life and that life is too short to cry about it.

I know what you're thinking: "But these girls are all pretty..." Yes, they are, but don't even compare yourself to them, because you too are pretty. You might not believe it, but you are. The problem is, we can't see our beauty, but yet we can see everyone elses. Here's a tip for your confidence: quit comparing yourself to others. Love yourself. God made you who you are for a reason. Be proud of it. Don't feel judged everytime you go out. Don't feel like you have to put on makeup to even call yourself pretty. Don't feel like you have to change yourself just to be considered beautiful. Because you already are. We just don't see our beauty until we're already trying to change ourselves. I think you're beautiful, whether you do or don't, and I am here if you ever need to talk 😊.

There’s part of the film where she has captured all the girls laughing, and without exception they all just look beautiful. I know it’s hard. The ironic and slightly cruel twist to being a woman is that when you are young, and probably the best you are ever going to look, and the slimmest/fittest you will ever be, that you have such low self esteem. I was not truly accepting and loving of myself til I was in my 40s. Now in my 50s and heaviest I have ever been, but having fought breast cancer and come out the other side, I am in awe of my chubby knackered body. It is stronger than I thought, and I need to take better care of it. Love yourselves first, ladies. Always.

When my acne was at its peak, I wouldn't leave the house. I couldn't even go buy my groceries because the people that saw me looked at me like I was an animal. I rarely ever saw anyone with acne as I had, and it isolated me. All I wanted was for people to not look at me. I didn't even want to look at myself. But then a shift in my mindset changed. I began to become a lot more grateful for my life and the body I had. I put in an effort to love myself and smile back in the mirror. It got a lot better. It's not the best, and it's nowhere near the same skin I used to have. But I'm healing. I go out now with a smile on my face. I pray that anyone struggling with self-love can begin their healing process, too. Sending love out to ya'll.

It’s 7am where I am now, and watching this as I get ready for another day in high school. I have had cystic acne for years, but cannot take certain medications for it because I am on other necessary prescriptions. People constantly point out my acne, tell me to change my already balanced diet, or to go to a dermatologist, even though I’ve seen several over the course of a few years. Thank you for making me feel not alone. I’ve surrounded by what seem like Instagram models all day long, and feel like I’ll never measure up to that in any way. I know I don’t have to, it’s just a constant battle. Love you, Em.

Same I am also in high school and I have struggled with acne for many years. I experienced all of the things you described. People can be horrible, sometimes even your friends or family (unintentionally). Everyone judges you without knowing or caring what's really going on. It really sucks, but we will get through this. It might sound silly, but I even feel like I am a stronger person now, even though I still cry at least once a week because of my acne.

Hey Lucy, I myself have also struggled a lot because of Acne. I tried so many things.. different beauty products with only natural ingredients, not eating sugar/fat/milk products, I went to many different dermatologists... exercising and changing my diet helped me a little, but it didn’t completely get rid of my acne... but what I can say what cleared it up almost entirely was birth control pills. I started to take those purely for that reason (I specifically asked my gynecologist for the type that also helps with bad skin, mine is called Maxim btw) and within a few months my scars faded almost entirely & I barely have bad breakouts anymore I‘m not sure if it will have the same effect on you as on me, but maybe it‘ll help. Give it a try, if you want :) Hope this helps. And remember, inner beauty is what really matters ❤️

Skin issues usually occur due to an imbalanced gut. If you take a good Probiotic and readjust your diet to rebalance your gut flora then you may start to see changes on the outside, but good skin is an inside job :) look up stuff on the gut and and how it effects skin and stick to natural skincare! Hope that helps ❤️xx

All the men saying how they suffer too is completely true however, she made this video based of her own experience being a woman and how other women feel based of how society portrays women. she can’t make a video of how men feel while being a woman. It's really annoying. Men, if you want to have a video on this topic with men, then make it happen! Stop acting like it womens responsibility to cater to your issues and shed light on it. The thing you'll find though is that men dont actually care about mens issues, they'll just bring them up when women are talking to make it all about them and to shut women up.

Even as a young man... I honestly relate to what the young women with acne in this video have said. Acne is truly awful, I cover it as much as I can. My acne is always deep in the skin and can be quite painful, as soon as one spot goes another one appears. I HATE going outside with my acne on show, even if I just pop out for a few minutes my anxiety can heighten. Even though this video was primarily dedicated to women. I still want to say thank you for creating it. I'm sure a lot of young women/girls AND young men/boys will find this useful. I would be extremely interested in seeing a group of men and their perspective on this subject. We are exposed to these "perfect bodies" like women, but a vast majority of men just do not talk about this stuff - around friends, family or anyone. Beauty aside, we more often than not keep all our issues to ourselves - which is likely why suicide is the largest killer of young men in my country. Still, thanks for this video. Very thought provoking! I hope people find use out of it.

@@AgentDigits I am not a good looking guy. I think us men have more options available to make ourselves attractive, and probably care less about being attractive. Our confidence is not so directly linked to being pretty. But I do think that acne is one thing that will challenge anyone's confidence, male or female. I don't know anything about acne but I have had some friends kill themselves. I'm not sure why they did it but I don't suspect it had anything to do with their appearance.
@AgentDigits
@AgentDigits 5 жыл бұрын
@@chesterdonnelly1212 I'm sorry you lost friends. Truly, it's awful. I didn't link a mans lack of confidence in their appearance to be the sole reason for suicide... But it is a reason non the less. I just meant that men (in the UK) don't talk about anything in-depth or how it makes them feel. Their appearance will be one of those things. Sure not all men are the same but some will hate how they look and struggle everyday to find confidence. As I said, suicide is the biggest killer of young men in the UK. There is a reason for that, we keep quiet about everything and the anxiety and depression those things cause drive people to do things. It's important for us to open up about what bothers us as much as possible so we can find help... Appearance is just ONE of those things. Health, family, sexuality, addiction, relationships etc. are others. A video with men (like this) talking about their insecurities and how they conquered them could really encourage some people to think about seeking help. Regardless about what those insecurities are. The whole "men don't cry" or "man up", "be a man" crap needs to stop. It just damages a person mentally. Stuff like this is also a huge factor for why men stay shtum.
@chesterdonnelly1212
@chesterdonnelly1212 5 жыл бұрын
@@AgentDigits I totally agree. I do hope that's changing but I'm not certain that it is. Being told to man up often comes from their mum or wife. I don't think suicides are coming down. Women talk a lot and generally in a relationship they want to talk and don't want to listen. If you talk too much as a man you get called a woman. When your wife doesn't want you to go out you can get cut off from your friends. If then she is being cold to you it can get very lonely. Then if the relationship breaks down you have nothing. I encourage my wife to have friends and go out, but she stops me. I can understand why some people take their own lives or give up and drink themselves to death. Especially if they haven't managed to get a decent career. Life can be lonely.

Social media didn't create low self-esteem and body image issues, but no one can deny that it's made the situation so much worse. It's easy to say we shouldn't compare ourselves to others, but the problem is that our brains automatically make those comparisons, and it's not something we can control. If you look at a picture of someone who looks impossibly perfect, and then you look in the mirror immediately afterwards, your brain will perceive you as being less attractive than if you had not looked at the picture before.

Im crying right now. This video is beautiful. I’ve been dealing with severe acne since I’m 10/11 and I’m 15 now. I’m now taking the pill (because it’s hormonal) and it’s gotten better. I’m feeling confident again. But I hate that I have lived with so much insecurity for 2 years (it was really bad 2017-2018). I couldn’t look people in the eyes, i didn’t wanted to go somewhere near the sun because then my skin would be very noticeable and didn’t wanted to be on ANY pictures. My friend once told me at the time that I wouldn’t get someone to love me because my acne was that bad. On Instagram we see all those people with clear skin standing in front of the mirror with beautiful light and no pore or pimple to be seen. Most of those pictures are face-tuned. We live in a lie. I’m only 15 and I’m insecure about how wide my hips should be and how big my breasts should be. Thats not normal at all. Social media is eating us. After this video I’m going to unfollow EVERY girl that I just follow because I like her face or body.

This video took my memories back to high school. Back to the laughing, pointing, bullying, whispering, suggestions that were told to me countless times, crying the night before because you know it’s going to happen all over again. Back to the feeling of hate for ones self because you don’t look like everyone else. Back to feeling like nothing I can do about it so just give up. I’m 28, got my first breakout at 12... even then it was pointed out to me by a classmate. From that day on it got worse and worse. I knew it was bad when all my older Aunts making comments about my face. I hated pictures. You won’t find me in any from my teen years. Even in my 20s I rarely took pictures, if I did, I HAD to be wearing makeup. And it had to be perfect. I’ve been with my boyfriend for almost a year now.... there’s no pictures of us. Even for special occasions and date nights. Because I know I’m going to look ugly, even if I’m wearing makeup. He tells me I’m beautiful in every way, inside and out. That I, and just me alone, bare skinned, am the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. It’s hard to start believing you’re beautiful when you’ve heard the total opposite for years and years. Yes, I’m insecure, intimidated, jealous and even hateful towards women who I see as beautiful. Something I could never be by definition. But I’m NOT going to let my looks define who I am. Yes, I have acne and scars. But I look like me. I don’t want to look like societies beauty standards... those girls all start to look the same.

Women (generally, some men too) climb the social hierarchy by putting others down, even family members, whether they know it or not. I'm sorry you suffered from this evolutionary hangup, but remember, you don't need beauty if you have a partner. Your other half really is the only metric that matters. If you succeeded in finding a partner, you already won the war, well done. All you have to do is try to recognise and avoid when you are tempted to do the same to others, for whatever reason.

no honestly Em, thank YOU.even from the health and diet niche that I am part of I had to get so used to brush stuff of and "man up" and the fact you went as far as testing and providing hard data is such invaluable facts you are bringing to the table. I stopped the presses today from my usual schedule to tell all my viewers to come watch this, cause as positive as I try to be seeing so many women just like me feeling just like I do is what sparked the lightbulb moment and i do want to believe this genuinely can start making us think into redefining our standard of what is beautiful even to our own selves. Cause critiques are never as hard as the ones that just repeat out loud what we are thinking about ourselves first. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Em, truly. xx

I'm touched and I'm crying watching this video. I forced myself to be brave enough to show people my bare face once in a while just to let my skin breathe and trying to be confident with my own skin as I suffered with acne scarring that is so hard to go away from my life. But it kept crushing me when seeing people looking at me like something is just wrong with my face, and sometimes they asked what is wrong with myface.. It is so cruel until one time, I decided to be me, and just me alone. I suffered with anxiety, so I had enough to be struggling with my own mind to do anything I want, I'm not gonna let just because of my skin condition to be another weigh to my shoulder. I always bare in my mind that DIFFERENCE MAKES US BEAUTIFUL. This what makes me be more confident with my own skin. And I was inspired by you Em.. ❤😘

I can’t thank you enough for all you do to help women and our self esteem. I had acne from the age of 12 up until about 5 years ago when I was 25/26. People have no idea how much it affects you every single day. I was ashamed to be seen without makeup. Even going to a water park for the day I still had to wear makeup. Drugstore makeup was never full enough to cover the redness and the bumps. I was embarrassed to be seen or have my picture taken. Any time I was around people I felt like all they saw were my pimples and nothing else. Some people would point it out or insinuate that I didn’t ever wash my face or take care of my skin. It was humiliating. Now I’m older (31) and even though I really don’t have acne anymore, I have all the discoloration and scars from when I did and I still feel like I can’t be seen without makeup. I still have that mindset that people only focus on my flaws. It never goes away. I’m so grateful that you acknowledged this with film and scientific evidence. It’s a real problem and we need people to work with us for a real solution. Thank you thank you thank you!! ❤️

This will probably get lost in the comments, but I'd like to add my own thoughts. I've been interested in what I find beautiful for a while. I noticed that what a lot of people call beautiful, I'd more call 'attractive, a.i. the features you're born with. However, the more I look at people, the more I find that a smile is what makes someone really gorgeous. Even people with the perfect features looks dull and unattractive to me, compared to someone who smiles. A well meant smile can make someone so pretty. I also love to watch people talk about things they are passionate about, I'd love the glow up people get from that, even if I don't find that topic particular interesting myself. I wished the media, and social media focused a lot more on what makes people happy, and feeling good with who they are, than the constant almost demeaning focus on looks alone.

This gave me chills. I can´t believe how spot on this was. I've been struggling with acne for 8 years. I went to the best doctors in my country, and they gave me all kinds of medicine. Nothing helped. After going to my school psychologist I found out, myself might I add (no doctor told me this) that it was all hormonal. Being physically and mentally bullied for not looking like the beauty standard sent me down a rabbit hole. It wasn't until last year that I figured out that I had to change my lifestyle. Live for me. That's also when my acne started clearing up. I'm still struggling from time to time, but nothing compared to what it was like five years ago. There should be models with acne and skin problems in the media, in commercials, on television. This is a step in the right direction. Thank you Em
