IKEA Smart Bulbs on Philips Hue Hub, Just Not As Cool - 913

Trying to Automate my home, with a cheaper alternative to the Philips Hue stuff. Brought me to IKEA, and there range of Smart Bulbs, switches and motion sensors (Trådfri).
Even though it is possible to pair the IKEA devises, with my Philips Hue. I am not able to control the IKEA trådfri equipment from my iPhone using Siri. I need the IKEA HUB,, for hub sake!!

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Thanks for the video - this was exactly the topic that I was about to ask you to make a video about, after I saw your previous one. Also - I must add that overall the current situation in the smart-home market is a total mess. While most of the devices available SHOULD be compatible with either Zigbee or Z-Wave standart protocols, and their SHOULD be more or less interchangably usebale from different apps, the actual situation is much worse. This video is a good example, but I've read that situation with Lifx and other brand inter-operability is even much worse than Philips/IKEA ones.

Philips Hue works better but is a whole lot more expensive. The latest update to this date on the Hue hub has caused even more problems with IKEA switches and dimmers. Bulbs can no longer be connected to an IKEA switch *and* the Philips Hue hub at the same time. Once the IKEA switch has synced with a bulb, the Philips Hue hub refuses to recognise the bulb any more. Then one has to factory-reset the bulb to sync it back into the hub again but then the switch won't work any more. It's a catch 22. I suspect that Philips is doing this to all companies that aren't an official member in their "Friends of Hue" club. As soon as a company register, pays the fees and become an official "Friends of Hue" member, their products get official support in the Philips Hue system.

You can control hue stuff using siri only with original hue bulbs. If you have third party lamps(tradfri or innr) with a hue bridge you need to spun up a homebridge docker/vm. They work fine that way. If you need help let me know, i tried on my innr stuff and siri sees them perfectly.

What's your overall experience with Homebridge? I'm currently planning out the addittion of smart-home setup for my apartment, and I want to be able to combine Hue lights, IKEA blinds, and other manufacturer thermostats and motion sensors, and as far as I've read on forums, it's a pain-in-the-ass to make them all work together nicely. One of the solutions I've found right now is a "Home Assistant" (home-assistant.io) - also a virtual solution that you can install on the RBPi or other computer, that should make life easier to tie all these devices together, but it still looks complicated. :/

@@zusurs Homebridge is done just as a homekit "adapter" in my home as everything else is homekit aware so i cannot say if it will suit your needs. There is a container option that is rather straightforward(just remember to enable the webui during the container setup as you won't be able to do it otherwise). I don't think you will be able to set up the tradfri blinds without a tradfri gateway so buyers beware(you might as well move the lights to tradfri too if you buy a tradfri gateway for the blinds).

My PlayHouse this is the plugin required to have the hue kit exposed to home bridge github.com/ebaauw/homebridge-hue . You will have to link it to the bridge by having the bridge in pair mode(button pressed) shortly before rebooting home bridge after the plugin is installed

I notice KZbin videos show them using a portable bulb chord to bring it near the hue bridge for initial connection. Mine are about 10 ft away. Will I be able to connect? Thought to know before buying.

The manual says to bring it near,, it might not need to be this near.

Hello Morten, wish you (and all other guys here) all the best for the next year. Morten, you can install an Iobroker in a virtual machine, on this the hue-adapter and also the yahka-adapter for emulate another Homekit-bridge. With this yahka-adapter you can control all this Tradfri-lamps you connected to the hue-bridge (you can see all the ligts in the objects after connecting an Iobroker with the Hue-bridge) - after that you can control all the bulbs which are not automatically in your Homekit availlable. With this Iobroker you cann connect many smarthome-systems together. For example you can use the Tradfri-switch to unlock your electric door, if they exist an iobroker-adapter for this system. You can for example turn on or off your TV over Siri and many more .... Happy new year and happy trying! 😉 If you are courious now ... you know my email-adress 😜

hey Morten, you can add your Ikea tradfri lamps with your Hue Bridge to HomeKit. You can do this with open Source software that you can install on an old computer or in docker or on a Raspberry Pi.

@@MyPlayHouse I installed it myself on a raspberry pi, so that also saves a lot of energy consumption compared to a large energy consumer such as a server. But you can also install it in Docker on your NAS

Hi Morton, interesting video, thanks! While the Ikea switches seem not to work for you on the Hue system, do you have a Hue switch to test with? Can a Hue dimmer switch control Ikea bulbs? The Hue switches are the only reasonably priced part of their eco system! If they can control Ikea bulbs, I think we may be onto a winner.
