Hey guys! If it wasn't obvious, at 9:59 is a clip of my cousins in New York playing Street Fighter 2 at a family gathering. Just wanted to clear up any confusion. I hope y'all enjoyed this story. Why are comments off in some of your videos? You are also so lucky your dad had a video8 camera the footage wouldnt look as nice if he went with vhs c or eveb vhs as those were mono and 2 heads. Video 8 could also fit 120 mins in sp mode were vhs c could not I have one birthday party tape of the 90s i should put it online.

Kids these days don't appreciate ANYTHING. It's all been done, there no evolution or growth, literally everything has peaked. The PS5 is showing that as its not exciting at all compared to the last 4 consoles. Stagnation of tech is occurring: graphics look real, sound is digital, multilayer is 100s of people, there's VR, games are better than films. This gen aren't easily pleased. I remember thinking Ridge Racer 1 looked real 😂😂😂

We were poor and my dad went and bought a SNES and Street Fighter 2 when it came out. I have such great memories of being in awe at how cool the game was and me and Dad would just play all the time. Such a good childhood.

Great memories. For me, we had a family trip to visit my aunt in Manhattan. The weather was cold but the sun was shining. My dad bought a SNES and we played Street Fighter 2 as well.

Man, did this video ever just jog a wild story from my childhood memory: Before Street Fighter 2 hit the shelves in the US, it was released months earlier on the Super Famicom in Japan (the Japanese version of the Super Nintendo). If you lived in the US, you could buy the Japanese version of SF2 (hidden in the classified section of Electronic Gaming Monthly) but it came with a special cartridge adapter that you had to use in order to make the Japanese Super Famicom cartridge fit with the North American Super Nintendo. The Japanese version of SF2 cost $150 with the adapter which was an astronomical sum for a video game. I seriously don’t know how I convinced my mother to get it - I probably promised a lifetime of mowing the lawn, unloading the dishwasher and straight A’s. With the imminent release of SF2 in Japan, there still was not an announcement of a US release date on the Super Nintendo (trust me, I literally checked every single day at Electronics Boutique in our shopping mall), so while a US release was inevitable due to the popularity of the game, my 14-year-old brain didn’t want to take the chance that SF2 wouldn’t make it to North America, so I convinced my mother to get the Japanese version of the game for me. Sure enough, when it arrived, it was euphoria. It was the most magical thing ever plugging everything in, and seeing the Capcom logo and the SF2 intro screen on MY TV, in MY living room. What a rush. I even jerry rigged the family boombox into a surround system and hooked it up to the TV. I didn’t need quarters, I didn’t have to wait in line, I didn’t have to go to the mall, and because I had the Japanese version I was probably the ONLY kid for hundreds of miles that had SF2 in MY house. I hosted tournaments that lasted hours. Since everything was in Japanese, me and my friends had to make up in silly voices what the winner and loser fighter were saying to each other at the end of each fight. We didn’t care, it was so awesome and unbelievable that we were playing SF2 before anybody else. But then after a week, tragedy struck. The shitty ass cartridge adapter failed! The Life-force that connected the Japanese SF2 cartridge to the North American Super Nintendo decided it could no longer handle my Enter The Dragon multi hour fighting tournaments and like most cheap ass things, took a dirt nap earlier than expected. Like all things cartridge related in the 90s, I blew on it so much until I got dizzy and passed out. Nothing. To say I was f*cked was an understatement. I was suddenly stuck with a $150 doorstopper with Ryu’s face on it. Back then, there was no customer service to complain about something not working. If you bought something from another country, you simply assumed the risk. But I didn’t know how I was going to explain to my mother that she just wasted $150 - and trust me she would have noticed if I wasn’t playing the game or asking for my friends to come over and play. It’s literally all we were doing if we weren’t in school. So I sat there listlessly for several minutes staring at the cartridge and the cartridge adapter - and then something hit me like a ton of bricks. I grabbed one of my US Super Nintendo cartridges and compared it to my Japanese Super Famicom SF2 and I made a startling discovery… …They had IDENTICAL circuit boards. The ONLY thing difference was that the North American cartridge had 2 notches on the bottom left and right hand sides that allowed it to slide into the Super Nintendo whereas the Japanese SF2 cartridge did not have those notches. And that’s when I realized I was going to have to do the unthinkable… …I was going to have to put a hacksaw to my $150 SF2 cartridge and cut those two notches out. There was no other way out of this. After 20 panic inducing minutes, I had cut the crudest sloppiest notches into my immaculate SF2 cartridge. I had totally defaced it. I was terrified that my mother would see the cartridge after she had spent all that money on it. So I took the cartridge over to my Super Nintendo and I pushed it in. There was a slight resistance, but I wiggled it and then I felt it pop in - but the cartridge was definitely not level. There was a pronounced angle from left to right because my notches were hardly uniform. Not expecting anything at all I flipped the power switch… …AND THE MF’ING CAPCOM LOGO POPPED BACK UP ON MY TV!!!!!!!!!! I couldn’t believe it!!!! I was suddenly the Thomas Edison of my neighborhood. It’s hard to put into words being 14 years old and getting technology from another country to work with your own. I was ‘back online’ before we all even knew what getting ‘back online’ meant. Anyway, thank you so much for making this video and reminding me of what was hands-down the most magical/terrifying/magical moment of my video game childhood.

I knew how this story would end and I laughed so hard. I experienced the same thing, only with the genesis. I didn't do anything directly on the Cadrige but rather on the Genesis. I simply opened the lid of the console and the game fit right in. I felt like Albert Einstein. My adrenaline was astronomical because the fear of destroying the console was enormous. At that time it was probably the most expensive device we had in the house

Dude, you're not even kidding. The first time I laid my eyes on the Nintendo version of SF2 was at my friend's house. I first was watching them play in complete disbelief, and then it was my turn and man, it played flawlessly. I was so happy on this day. This video actually teared me up man, not gonna lie.

My mom passed away December last year and I often have so many memories that come up from time to time that make me not just miss my mum so much, but also those past times

@@MyRetroLife i was surprised back then how close the port was to the arcade, it made me love my snes even more. the genesis port was no slouch! the voices were low sample and scratchy and the colors were a bit faded, but it was a good port. just not snes-quality. even the tg16 version was solid with great color on par with the snes. SF2 was the CoD of its time lol. im not interested in most other SF games today, not even the newest ones. after SF2 and MK1 and MK2 and fatal fury, art of fighting, world heroes and then samurai shodown? i was done with fighting games. kudos to those who still play'em and are good at them today.

To me, Street Fighter 2 is a reminder of a time when gaming MEANT SOMETHING! Modern gaming is largely soulless, bullies you into downloading update after update, not to mention all those in-crap purchases and games being released unfinished! If I had a kid, I’d rather let him or her play Custer’s Revenge than Candy Crush! That is how bad modern gaming has gotten! I even skipped the PS4 and only got an Xbox One because my Jasper 360 RRODed and my Mom insisted I did, instead of letting me just get an Xbox 360 E in the blink of an eye! It’s really sad when your parents don’t appreciate classic tech as much as you do! A lot of modern tech is one step forward four steps backwards!

@@Ishitonyou666 since i was like two years old to 12, i couldnt afford the games, me and my brother would cut out the pictures of all the games we imagine would be ours, we would collect the cutouts like almost like pokemon cards. One day my brother said to me why does it matter this is useless we will never have them. Turns out it would years later, our parents got us some videos games. But the sad part it was to late. The joy of games is going on the journey with your peers/friends when the games come out not multple years later. Im not gonna enjoy a video game at the age of 13 the same way i would enjoy it at the age of 7.

I remember back in 1991 to 1992 New Years Eve, back when we still lived in the Philippines. My parents are divorced we live with my Dad and my Mom lived in Canada. My Dad told me and my little brother to take an afternoon nap so we're not tired for the New Year countdown. He did not tell us that my Mom, aunts and uncles sent us presents. My Dad put it all on the bed with us. I remember waking up, opening my eyes and there's an Air Jordan shoes with my name on it, my bro has the Air Force. There's chocolates, t-shirts, sunglasses and an NES with multiple games. I thought I died and went to heaven!! Me and my brother were jumping for joy! What a New Year. It was an amazing feeling that I will never forget...

I've been playing SF since the 90s. It got me into fighting games and that's mostly what I play. I just got SF6 and was playing until 3am, the game is amazing. I'm in my 40s now and I still love fighting games. The only thing that has changed is that I no longer have as much time to play as I did back then. I'm a father now, I've been teaching my daughter how to play fighting games and I'm happy to say she's as excited as I am for SF6.

While you guys are fathers, I’m childless and more like Ryu, been playing Street Fighter since Super Nintendo Street Fighter II as a kid and after watching Ryu destroy Bison in Street Fighter V when I completed story mode, I feel like my journey ended with Street Fighter. Now with Street Fighter 6 out, I didn’t buy it and am just watching videos of people playing it, it’s a game for a whole new generation, and my time with it as a 40 year old man now is done. I’m not sure if I want to try and play Mortal Kombat 1 because it’s PS5 exclusive and I don’t have a PlayStation 5 yet, and am debating getting it. Growing up does suck, but it’s a part of life, it just goes on.

I felt kinda bad because it was going for like $70-80 and I had never asked her for anything that much before, but I knew that I was going to play the living hell out of it.

Street Fighter 2 with the SNES was my Christmas gift that year. SF2 is still the greatest fighting game ever for the impact it had. My parents and my sister would all play it and have tournaments. It was great.

My dad used to rent the SNES system for me and my brother at a video store in Woodlake, CA and it came with a game. We would get SF 2 every weekend. It cost 9.99 plus tax for Sat and Sunday. It was 10.73 after taxes. Magical moments... 💪

Street Fighter 2 Turbo was my first home version of SF2 I got in 1993 and I loved it. The idea that there was so much replayability was amazing such as seeing the ending for each of the characters but different difficulty with different endings. There was even a special ending if you win at level 8 with no continuing and even one for never losing a round.

2:42, I think like 70% of boys back then wore their socks and shoes from the time they woke till they went to bed. I don't recall anyone wearing sandals or going barefoot back then. You could look at a kids shoes and know how often they played outside. Now most kids are barefoot or in Crocs and just hang out in the house.

My older brother (RIP) took me to the Coney Island back in the day and I was introduced to SF2. Next thing I know I come home from school and not only is it a Super Nintendo but a SF2 cartridge. Back then you only got shit like that on birthdays or Christmas. This was a regular ass Tuesday in the summertime so I was geeked through the roof.

I love this video. It's like seeing myself with my buddies. I also played streetfighter 2 for the first time. My best friend's father sold arcade games and he had EVERY game in the world. I felt like a kid in a candy store. We played there every single day from 1989 to 1997, that year his father died in a horrible car crash. Rip Roger.

I got my SNES and street fighter the same day. Just a random day in the fall of 92 or 93. Came home from school. Mike clean your room. So i did. Mike take out the garbage. I did. Mike did you clean your room? Yes i did. Did you clean under bed? I didn't. Fine mom. Knelt down to clean under my bed, and there it was. I was so happy. Thank you for the video. I was a Sega Genesis fan and didn’t own an SNES, but when the home version of SF2 was released, I bought an SNES. That EGM magazine ( April 1992 ) is my favorite issue because it also had the infamous Sheng Long April fools prank. I was a bit disappointed with the bgm, but the game was great and it helped me hone my skills. The 1990s was a remarkable time for videogames. 😊

I borrowed SF2 from a friend at school when I was in grade 6. I played it so much during the two weeks I had it that the tendons in my inside forearms were sore from smashing the L and R buttons for heavy attacks. What a revolutionary game.

That was an incredible time. In Germany, arcades were rare, and arcade cabinets were mostly found in casinos where kids weren’t allowed. My first experience with Street Fighter was on a Super Nintendo, and it was absolutely amazing. It’s really hard to describe the feelings we had as kids back then because nothing today even comes close. My aunt brought us F-Zero and Street Fighter for our birthday, and we went crazy. I’ll never forget that day-we played all night long. Then, when Street Fighter II Turbo came out, it blew our minds all over again. Who remembers the cheat code for the Mega Turbo mode? After the Capcom logo disappears in the opening credits, press Down, R, Up, L, Y, B, X, and A on controller 2. Those were truly great times. Today, I’m a game developer myself, working on games that I hope will bring back that same amazing feeling. Thank you for the great video!

Had hours of fun, especially after school.. when was released on home console, boy we went ape! I originally played SF2 at a bowling place and the cool thing is they had few arcades but they were all bangers: Robocop 2, Joe & Mac and SF2, it seems the kid of the owner of the place knew a lot about video games and he advised his dad what arcades to get. I must say I was blown away by SF2 because there wasn't anything like it anywhere, the first time I played SF2 at home was like getting a neo geo at home or at least that's how I felt.

Im from the uk and was holidaying in Florida as a 10 year old kid when it was released months before the UK PAL edition. My parents spent an ungodly amount on it for us at the time and to have that version at home using a converter was simply amazing

I was born in 1981. I miss my friends and those videogames times...I cannot believe sometimes I used to hide or reject friends to come to my home, because sometimes they just dropped by unexpectedly to play videogames now life is so different. O’boy,,, your Dad is a legend, I must say the 90’s footage you showed brought back a sudden rush in memories that made me tear, I remember my Dad once went to Japan on a business trip in 1989 and got me a mega drive with couple of games ( the revenge of Shinobi ) was my best, in summer 1994 he went to the US and got me a got me a Super Nintendo with couple of games one of them was Street Fighter the other one was Super Metroid, because I didn’t know what was Super Metroid I decided to check it out as soon as the initial story ended I was hooked and that cartridge didn’t leave the SNES the whole summer, Love you Dad so much. Now a days me & my kids have a blast on these same old consoles, at my home I run a no online gaming policy, we set together in my office playing Sega, SNES & Nintendo 64 multiplayer games or we take turns. The bulk of fun on the Nintendo 64. God bless you Sir & your Family.

My goodness! You took the words out of my mouth. When I finally got SF2 on Super Nintendo it was like I’d gone to Heaven. I spent my whole summer playing SF2 in 1992, a 12 year old kid, hanging out at the mall/arcade every day. This is before home consoles were at all comparable to arcade games at all. Graphics, sound quality etc could only be found at a magical place that had the game that you essentially just worshipped in the early 90’s. Just like yourself, I remember playing SF2 at home for the first time and I was literally giddy as can be. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Not to mention I didn’t have to pump tokens in to play anymore. This was my game, at home unrestricted. Great memories ❤ Similar thing happened when I got Mortal Kombat but the very first time with SF2 was exhilarating!!!

Dude, why you got my grown ass crying like a little kid? Great video. I couldn't afford to buy it at first but I rented it A LOT. Whenever I had it at my house I had like a dozen of my friends over. At 12 years old I wasn't able to get a regular job, so I took a ton of baby sitting jobs and was finally able to save up to buy my own copy. That was one of the best days of my life. What was even better, is that I got my dad to sit down and play with me. He wasn't that good since the last games he played were on the Atari, but I appreciated that time he spent with me. I'm sorry that your dad is no longer in your life. He seemed awesome. Mine still is despite multiple bouts with cancer. Every time that I see him I make sure to give him a big hug and tell him I love him because I never know when it will be the last time. Thank you for sharing this video.
