Mysteries in Fetal surgery | Oluyinka Olutoye MD PhD | TEDxRVA

Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye’s curiosity led him to research scarless healing in the fetus and into the world of fetal treatment and surgery. He discusses the current status of fetal treatment, provides a glimpse into the future, and shares about his journey into this remarkable specialty.
Dr. Olutoye is a Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine, and is Co-Director of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center at Texas Children’s Hospital, in Houston, Texas. He completed his medical education at Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-Ife, Nigeria and received his Ph.D. in Anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University.
He has specialized clinical expertise in fetal and neonatal surgery, with specific interest in congenital diaphragmatic hernia and complex wounds. Dr. Olutoye’s research interests include topics like understanding the role of the fetal inflammatory response in scarless fetal wound healing and in utero correction of severe congenital malformations. In addition, he has participated in medical missions to Russia, Guatemala, Haiti, Malawi, Botswana, and Liberia. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics and the West African College of Surgeons.

Amazing talent and wonderful advancement in research & technology that I wish was available in the early 80's. My late sis was born with spina bifida and presented with all the symptoms as described including hydrocephalus. I wish Dr Olutoye's time was then, but would still like to meet him nonetheless. The world is indeed blessed by what the likes of Dr Yinka are doing now and God bless the work of his hands.

America have hundreds of well trained Nigerian doctors. People in Nigeria sometimes have to go without medical care because they don't have money to pay the doctor. These doctors are well aware of how a good healthcare system works. They sometime return to Nigeria to give free treatments. They could serve Nigeria better if they return to Nigeria, set up and lobby for a healthcare system to serve the Nigerian people. They are in America making money and giving Nigerians a word overseas about well they are doing. Why not improve Nigeria's healthcare system ? Americans are doing okay.

This one was actually free! It was the first ever made and the brave mom wanted by any means necessary to save her unborn child so offering herself without future consequences of suing this doctor and his team took that calculated risk! I guess the next patient will have to afford an astronomical fee to save her baby and herself. I am not sure if most normal insurance will allow this cost!
