Over hundreds of years these people were murdered. Yet every one killed the same way ? Almost sounds like a cult. Yet the research implies zombies , ghost, like abilities. Very strange story. My first time hearing of this.
@schizoidboy11 ай бұрын
An episode of Mystic Britain covered this discovery and they believed the remains of the people were revenants. Revenants are entities that are a bit hard to describe, in the show the compared them with zombies, but they also have ghost like qualities. Like vampires, you dig up their graves and take apart the corpse or burn it.

Thank you.... I was wracking my brain trying to remember where I heard this before. 🤔 It seemed vaguely familiar, but I gave up and put it in my 'Probably A Time Team Episode' mental folder.
@Anglisc16825 ай бұрын
This is true. People who were wrongdoers or who were bitter, resentful or who died with unfinished business were believed to potentially become revenants. Corporeal undead who retained everything they had in life in terms of ability and had extra abilities such as the ability to turn into dogs, owls and other beasts. This belief was widespread throughout Europe and predates Christianity It's inaccurate to call them zombies, that is a modern Hollywood trope. And vampire is just a term people are familiar with but don't understand. A revenant is a living corpse in anthropological terms, I think
@yayatheobroma929Ай бұрын
Note that "revenant" literally means "coming back" (from the dead) in French, present participle of the verb "revenir" (come back, come again). In French, the term encompasses the whole spectrum of the undead.

My first thought (in general) for someone who is burried outside of consecrated ground is that the person either committed suicide or died without being baptized. If they were suicide victims or natural deaths of non-baptized persons, could this village have thought it necessary to mutilate and burn the bodies after death? Is it possible to discern whether the wounds were inflicted pre or post mortem? Maybe they weren't murdered or sacrificed at all?
@The-Resurrectionists Жыл бұрын
Yes it's quite the mystery! By the marks on the bones it appears the removal of heads was done post mortem, but the other wounds are inconclusive. Personally, I think it's likely all the mutilation happened after death, but of course what we can't tell is if these people died of natural circumstances or if they were murdered first. It's made all the more stranger by the age range: some were small children, others middle aged, others old. One of the bodies was that of a toddler!

Far back in the days when vampire rumors was running around in different areas those who was accused for vampirism and sometimes killed by locals had big stones placed in their mouths and by that they couldnt bite their victims if they should rise from their graves. When the plague was killing a lot of people around the world some thought that those who was bleeding around their mouth acctually had been drinking others blood and in these worst cases they could be executed rather hastly in a time when wrong ideas sometimes was the right answer ... of course not for the poor victim. And thanks for the story. 👍

Yes, I think it's a strong possibility! Historians believe that by this time, Christianity had fully spread across England, with St. Martin's Church playing a significant role in village life at Wharram Percy, so ruled any sort of ritual sacrifice out. But I can't help but wonder, in such a remote rural part of Yorkshire, if the "old ways" might have been continued for longer than else where...thanks for commenting! :)

@@The-ResurrectionistsEnjoyed the video 👍 . One could possibly discern from this video that either the bodies were victims of an attack from a humanoid animal now hopefully exstint called a vampire . Possibly either , they were victims of mass hysteria of the town's people believing these poor souls were demon possessed . Nothing back then strikes fear in the hearts of those then bazaar behaviour as what we now know to be simply epilepsy 💔 . Only other explanation , if even seemingly unrespectively filpant ~ is that a time traveller managed to arrive th that place in time and had to choose those victims as a human sacrifice for black magic purposes to travel back to the traveller's present time period 🤷 . ♑✍️🇧🇻🇦🇺

You mention Guillaume de Percy going to Antioch during the 1st crusade. What you didn’t mention was that there the crusaders developed a taste for human flesh. First mentioned in “Gesta Dei per Francos” 1108. And later in “La Chanson d’Antioche” 1250 They describe “Vicious cannibals who enjoy the taste of their enemies”. Perhaps it began with starving pilgrims eating fallen soldiers, however it seems to have escalated through the ranks. Could it be when they came back they began a cult as an initiation into a new order?

I would be curious to know if there were DNA tests performed on the pit remains. Even though the deaths were years apart, the thought crossed my mind if by chance they were related by blood. A cursed family or clan that bore the brunt of a community's hatred and the blame for some perceived communal misfortunes over the years. Just a thought.
@dawnfowler21948 ай бұрын
THAT is a very good question!! I was wondering the same thing. Especially as they were buried outside consecrated ground. Many, many "Vampire" burials have been found IN consecrated ground, in Church Graveyards as the person was not suspected to be a vampire until AFTER their death when folks claimed to have seen them or, even worse, been visited by them, after they had been buried under a Holy Rite of Burial. It was then that people would go open the grave of the suspected vampire; staking, decapitating and often burning the corpses (or bones if that was all that was remaining)when it appeared the body was indeed the Undead. As these 10 bodies buried outside of the Warrem Percy Church graveyard were not only denied consecrated ground but also were of various ages, both sexes and tossed into the same mass grave over a period of two hundred years I would not suspect that they had been feared as vampires for, in most vampire traditions, mutilation alone could not stop a vampire. I, like you, suspect that they represent a poor family who, for whatever reason - be it a genetically inherited birth defect such as Ectrodactly (A disorder which causes the person's hands and feet to have just two digits, giving a Lobster claw appearance)or possibly Hypertrichosis ("Wolfman syndrome "which causes 90% of the body to be covered with hair) a hereditary Mental disorder or, possibly the belief that he Family i question were Witches - something that set an entire Hereditary Line apart from the rest of the Village and caused others to fear them. Therefore, upon their deaths (whether naturally or quickened) they were shown great disdain and disrespect. Their bodies not only mutilated and dismembered but then hastily thrown into a oft reused pit like so much garbage (as they were considered as such). By mutilating and dismembering them it could, in many cultures, make it difficult for them to go to the After-life and/or the Creator to recognize them and allow them entry to Paradise. By throwing them into, essentially, a garbage pit one took away from them their Humanity and the Respect rightfully owed to the deceased. In conclusion, I feel you have made a very important point about the need to rest the remains of these 10 People to see if there are any hereditary bonds that may better help to explain not just their burial but life experiences.

Yes, bloodlines weee often held responsible for a curse, and some exterior signs were believed to betray the cursed nature of the individual (not ALL members of the family bore the curse). Regarding vampires specifically, being born with one tooth had been seen as a proof of the cursed nature (no idea if this specific belief was common in medieval England). It didn't imply they killed the baby, because as long as lived, they were harmless, but when the person born with a tooth died, the townsfolk would make sure they wouldn't come back.

Interestingly, Romans accused the last Brythonic druids of cannibalism when it was they, themselves, who had not so distantly practised it. So, are vampires a Roman concoction passed down the inhabitants of other lands?
@mavka.chorna3 ай бұрын
Could be, but Slavs also believed in vampires and vampyric phenomena since pagan times (nyavka, kikimora, etc.) despite little to no contact with Roman Empire (unless you count Byzantines as Romans, which happened around 8-10th century AD).

@@theoriginalkyttyn7724 Slavs arrived and were Christianized much later than Constantine (between 8th and 10th century AD). They had no contact with "pagan" Rome, only its Christian variety and yet the beliefs in vampires and vampyric phenomena existed amongst them earlier and didn't go away with Christianization, just repurpoused. Their beliefs on vampires and vampyric phenomena (kikimora, drekavec, nyavka) are pre-Christian and part of oral tradition. The similarities they might have had with "Romans" are surface level because Slavs, Greeks, Celts and Italics are all Indo-European ethno-linguistic groups. Like all Indo-Europeans, they also had a Thunder/Sky God (Perun) as a chief deity and Oak trees were sacred, with no previous contact with "Romans" and only mild contact with Germanic tribes.
