Good one Dean . Don't forget the cross slide should run slightly inwards to give a concave effect when facing . Similar thing like a tailstock is a couple of thou high on centre unless it is worn out . With face grinding , try plunging straight in . With the inner face of the wheel relieved , it should leave a crisscross pattern . If not the grinder has to be shimmed to tilt it slightly . I mark the face with a sharpie then run the wheel by hand until the shimming is correct . The taper came out great . Cheers 👍

Thanks Max, I was going to try the plunge face grinding method, but was advised my little grinder wouldn't have enough power. I might give it a try with as much reliving as posable, since I'm already at depth. It's been a great learning process, although a bit stressful. Thanks again for the great advice and info... Cheers....

Gday Dean, you have done a great job grinding this, I certainly don’t have a gonads to attempt this, it’ll be interesting to see if swapping the other 2 jaws makes a difference, brilliant job mate

I had a chuck that I could not get to run concentric. I ground the jaws in place with a pencil grinder and it fixed the problem.

I think your cross slide is giving you the concave readings. Put a straightedge in the jaws and indicate on that. You can rotate the chuck 180 to get it right angles to the bed. Nice work! I am getting the courage together to do this to a D1-6 chuck!

Great idea ! I didn't think of that, my head was spinning quite a bit on this one.. Thanks...ATB...

What method did you use to set the grinding wheel on centre? Mr. Crispin had a good YT video on grinding chucks that is worth watching
@TheAyrCaveShop7 ай бұрын
@@Throughthebulkhead Yeah I watched his several times in preparation. I used a height gauge set to a turned center to transfer and set the center height of the grinder spindle. Also tram'ed in the spindle like you would a mill to verify the vertical plane, before setting the grind angle. very important. Thanks, Jonathan

Dean you have done an excellent job with what you have to work with. My experience is that I usually drive myself nuts chasing those last couple of tenths. When in RealWorld it is the finished part that tells us the secret that is hiding from us. Boss Kettering always said, "the problem will tell you the solution." I am quite a way behind you because I am just starting to build my own version of a tool post grinder. The finished job will be grinding 2 old but, good 3 jaw chucks. Having never done this before I will be walking across the Mine field blind folded. LOL I noticed something on the grinder you are using that really caught my eye. The protective cone on the toggle switch is an amazing idea. I have a couple of toggle switches on 2 of my machines and I always worry about tripping them accidentally. Did the motor come this way, or did you make the protective cone for the toggle switch? Thanks a million for sharing your time and knowledge with us.
@TheAyrCaveShop7 ай бұрын
Hi Terry, funny I had the same reaction to the switch cone when I got the little grinder. Yes it came with it pretty sure its original. I really lucked out finding the grinder, it may have been used only once and at a good price. I've had fairly good success using my DIY tool post die grinder doing chuck jaws. But on one the scroll was so worn when a deferent diameter than ground part was chucked up, it would be out..Lol Thanks Terry, ATB...

Hi Dean, those sine bar compound kits look really good. A lot of work setting that up. I learnt a lot. I must make myself a toolpost grinder sometime. I've got a suitable motor I think. Excellent quality video and audio. Must have taken quite some time to edit that up. Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, Editing you may agree is the least favorite thing, maybe AI is the answer 😕LOL I made a poor mans TPG using a die grinder...it's not to bad. Those sine bars are beautifully made, video may not do it justice. Thanks...Cheers....

I watched a YT that was very interesting take, not the usual take on aligning chuck jaws. I recommend this YT to any one thinking of doing a jaw regrind. Threadexpress Lathe Chuck Accuracy - Fix your 3 Jaw Chuck EDIT also check the face of the chuck for dishing on your face plate as you did the jaw tracks at the beginning of your video, will eliminate other causes of inaccuracy (i.e. cross slide). Yeah I was just thinking it’d be good to try flipping the jaws around. If you do happen to grind in the jaws it’d be great to see a video of that.

Lathes are supposed to face slightly concave. It would be interesting to see where your indicator would end up if you kept moving to the other end of the chuck. That might give you some clues about headstock alignment.
@TheAyrCaveShop7 ай бұрын
Interesting Thanks, I did sweep all the way across the jaw slots and it came back up to zero. I don't remember if I did that to the face. I will try it Thanks !

Great Job Dean!! Always learning a lot from your videos!!! Did you check your lathe head alignment with lathe axis?? I have same 13x40 lathe and have same issues, same D1-4 pins still loose even when chuck is touching spindle (like your old 3 jaw chuck that has a steel shim).. keep posting!!! ;)
@TheAyrCaveShop7 ай бұрын
When I started digging into the spindle fit-up issue it is somewhat common on these import lathes. I have 2 chucks that require shims and they work quite well once you get the right thickness. Yeah and I should do a head alignment test. Thanks for viewing / commenting. ATB....
@Bax_Cave7 ай бұрын
Nice go around on touching up the chuck, been there. I suspect your measured taper across the jaw slides and chuck face is from your carriage. Not likely to measure the same taper using the surface plate.
@LikeFactoryMade7 ай бұрын
is it really the face of the chuck dished or the X axis travel is not exactly perpendicular on the Z axis. If that's the case, I think you're on the amount that it should be. That means now its slightly below 90 degrees,. once the saddle wears out it will become 90 then it will get higher than 90 when it wears out more. Just sayin, maybe I've missed some details along the way.
