Fun fact about the new one: the first season didn't actually have them riffing in the same room for the most part, a lot of it was ADR'd after the fact, which is why (for my money) The Gauntlet has better pacing and riffing, they were doing them all together in the same room. And whatever you think about the new seasons, love them or hate them or somewhere in between, Joel has run some of the most honest and transparent crowdfunding I've EVER seen. Constant updates showing EXACTLY where the funding/money goes and why exponential growth is not only possible, but inevitable (the first Kickstarter answered the question of "why does X amount only equal 3 episodes, but Y amount equals 6?" by showing how much it was going to cost to build sets and pay for writers/workers VS how much it costs to KEEP those people on once everything is in place). Considering how many Kickstarters seem to think they can just put out some vague, overly optimistic goals and then just go radio silent for years (or indefinitely in some cases), Joel's total commitment to showing people just WHERE the money they pledge is going is not only admirable: it's incredibly smart! I don't think the problem was ever density of riffs, per se, but rather segues between them. The similarity between the three actor's voices... just the literal tone and timbre of their actual voices... was a big stumbling block, because it's hard to legit know when a riff is over and when the next begins. As they got more comfortable with their personas (and especially as Baron Vaughn started to ABSOLUTELY NAIL Tom Servo) it helped a lot, because they all started just talking differently from one another. (this is one reason I'm disappointed Emily isn't the upcoming host)
@ShadowWingTronix3 жыл бұрын
One other problem also is that Netflix from what I've heard doesn't have ads, so figuring out where to do the skits needs a different formula. I don't have Netflix but all except one episode (the 11 finale I think) aired on IFC and where the skits happen isn't always as natural feeling as they were on the previous versions. Sometimes the skit happens and where it would go to ad break just went back to the show. They added in a bit where Max makes some comment about the movie followed by "You're watching MST3K, Moon 13, the Moon" with the boneheads playing a sort of jazzy background tune for the actual commercial breaks.
@corvus19703 жыл бұрын
@@JC-fg2jz While I disagree that the riff-density was a non-issue (Seriously, the riffs in REPTILICUS come on so fast that it's almost excruciating), I agree that the biggest issue was that the voices were WAY too similar for the longest time. Also, I too am a touch disappointed that Emily isn't the new host. Glad it's not just me.

The reason a good chunk of people don't know MST3K comes from the fact that this show was barely brought outside of the US. For example, we never got it in Germany, instead we got our own version called "SchleFaz" about 6-7 years ago which is still running and tackles waaaay different movies for the most part. Of course SchleFaz tackled stuff like Samurai cop, but we also got stuff like Hentai Kamen for example. Also our version is way more low key. We don't have any major set-up, it's just 2 famous comedians/actors making fun of it like modern Internet reviewers in a living-room while doing tiny skits about the movie inbetween add-breaks and the like. And instead of talking over the movies they actually blip in some word-boxes/baloons with their witty remarks or running gags.
@carlrood44573 жыл бұрын
Again, that's probably due to rights issues as much as anything else. They had trouble with video releases of some episodes as well. The RiffTrax crew wanted to release riffs with the movies, but it was never going to be affordable, if they'd been allowed at all. They also toyed with the idea of creating a player that could play the riff and movie in sync.

From what I understand, the reasons why Netflix love to cancel the shows after two seasons… is because of money. Not because the show will lose viewers, but because after two seasons it’s generally around this time frame when crew and the showrunners get their pay raises. To prevent that, they often cancel the show after two seasons, unless it is something cheaper like an animated show, or if it’s something they’re constantly brings in new subscribers. That’s why the dark crystal mini series was cancelled only after one season: when it won it’s Emmy, the pay raise they would’ve gotten would’ve been massive and Netflix didn’t wanna give them the increased amount of money, and it’s why they cancelled MST3K on netflix: They didn’t want to pay them extra money.

How I discovered MST3K, my family would set up a tape to record Hercules and Xena on late Saturday nights. One day, we left the tape playing and we discovered another show, MST3K. It was the version where episodes were split into two parts.

I'm shocked you didn't just sum it all up as "it's just a show I should really just relax."

I didn't grow up with MST3K like you young Americans did. My interest in the show was first laid when I watched the movie on Showtime many moons ago. Hell, we didn't even get the Sci Fi network in Australia until about 2006. And even then, I only watched it for it's paltry run of anime shows, quality notwithstanding. But it was through KZbin watching bootleg videos on this platform that finally peaked my interest and that interest has stayed with me in the years since.

AT4W was one way that I rediscovered MST3K (I had seen a couple episodes before but they only exist in vague memories) and this last week, I became a backer for the second kickstarter so thanks Linkara for introducing me to my favorite TV Show ever made.

One of the things I liked about the host sections was how each host seemed to bring something different to the roll and their situation on the SOL. Joel was accepting, just letting it all happen and typically not being that proactive.only loosing his cool in specific circumstances. Mike was more frustrated, looking for ways to get out of the situation and more vocal about disliking the films, and Jonah felt like a mix of the two, while he was more accepting of the situation like Joel, he was more proactive like Mike, but rather then just trying to get off the satellite (ignoring the Gauntlet for a moment) he was focused on making improvements, upgrading the bots, building new ones and trying to make the overall experience more enjoyable.

It's thanks to you that I got into MST3K. Before that, the only people who I had heard bring it up I had a very low opinion of, so in turn, I had a low opinion of the show. But, when I started watching you in the early 2010's, I figured I'd give it a chance after seeing the clips from it that were on AT4W. And now I've spent over $300 on Rifftrax (shorts and vods, since I don't really have the free time to sit down and worry about syncing) and I've added a bunch of MST3K episodes to my list of things to watch during the Halloween season.

Linkara good sir you have long been one of my favourite content creators and seeing you talk so directly about your love of MST3K is a magical moment. Thank you. Keep on doing what you do 😁

The most shocking thing that we learned from this episode: Linkara still has an MP3 Player.

I’d wonder if this kind of format could work in a wandavison type story, someone retreating into an older comics to cope with trauma, someone get Alan Moore on this!
@edwardscales55033 жыл бұрын
@@alexandredesbiens-brassard9109 that’s a fair, point, and I wouldn’t want such a story to go that direction, And yeah there plenty of writers who fit the idea as well.
@richmcgee4343 жыл бұрын
@@edwardscales5503 Given the state of the Big Two these days, the "trauma" could simply be what modern comics are like. I'd rather live in the Silver Age myself than read most of what's coming out from DC and Marvel these days. Hmmm. The "someone" doing the retreating could be an internet content creator who's done one too many Patreon request videos about terrible comics, couldn't it? :)

Loved the video, but honestly, the intro itself was something I enjoyed the most. It's always a blast hearing people talk about the things that inspire them and how they influence the work they do.

I'd like to point out that the second revival season definitely slowed the pace down, and cut back on the references to the classic show and pop culture. These were complaints I didn't get or agree with at the time, but Joel and friends listened and worked that feedback into the next season. And it didn't hurt. It's just cool that the fans directly impact the style, tone and writing of the show. That's freaking rare, mst3k is such a treasure.

14:30 I did not expect a reference to the Tick, but I sure won't complain about it. Also, it makes me wanna see a review of any of the Tick comics. Also also, given your love for MST3K, much like Thanos, it was inevitable that you would review this MST3K comic.

I feel the mst3k format is actually getting revived again on KZbin, with a few channels (Razzle, Cosmonaut Variety Hour) getting popular at least partially f it. Especially since stuff like discord has made it easier to organize a group riff.

I found MST3K on Comedy Channel in 1993. There was a special hosted by Penn who explained the show. I like all the hosts, but Mike was my guy.
