Been to shops. They couldnt feed clunking in pedals and steering wheel. Replaced track bar and drag link. Still no improvement. Saw this video and replaced this shaft and bottom u joint was completely shot. This is the answer I have been looking for. 2019 f350 diesel dually

I’ve got 2 2019s and 1 2017 and all three have had that replaced, the 2017 twice (217K miles). My 2017 was the first to exhibit the problem around 75K. Was driving me and crazy and (long story short) took the ford place a month to figure it out. Since then I’ve replaced it my self if the warranty was out. Wish I’d seen a video like this when I was trying to investigate originally. Anyway thanks for posting this, it should help some folks.

The owner described what I thought was the death wobble. Is there any connection?

@@kgill5 Death wobble is a completely different problem. I’ve had that on a couple also. I think Arod has done a video on that too but there are other guys out there too. Death wobble is much more violent and is mainly a steering wheel effect. This problem is a clunking felt/heard in the fuel pedal and to some degree in the steering wheel. It is much more subtle than the death wobble.

Done a few of these now for this exact complaint, was a weird one when I first had one come through the shop, seems more common on f550s from what ive seen personally. 18-19s mainly for me, maybe one 20?

Thank you for the new post, my 2019 has been doing this for a few years now. I never could get my local dealer to look into it. They always replaced my steering stabilizer. Now I know what to do!

I had the same thing happen to my 2019! Drove me freaking nuts! This new lower shaft fixed my problem.

This is really interesting. I have an '08 Super Doody gasser. I had this part replaced on mine a couple years ago because I could feel a light shaking/knocking in my steering wheel/column and some clunking that felt like it was resonating in the pedal area. The tech actually went on a ride with me so I could show him what I felt. Fixed it right up after he realized where my concern was.

Man, this is my exact issue. Feeling the vibration/clunk in the pedals when going over bumps and more so on left turns. You're awesome dude. Will the steering wheel still be aligned after this.

Make sure someone doesn't turn your steering wheel when it's off because you could end up breaking your clock spring if it some how gets turned 360 degrees. Might want to run your seatbelt through the steering wheel and buckle it just to be safe.

Thank you so much. I have not found any mechanic that can figure this out on my truck. Perfect video. Are there any torque specs for the bolts, and do you recommend using blue locktite?

Got a 19 truck, have had this shaft replaced twice. Once at 27k and at 40k. By looking at the part, the micro needle bearings in U-joints don't holdup in a super duty application.

Chevy trucks have had that problem for a long time. On the Chevy's if you just removed one of the bolts and compressed the shaft a couple times the noise would stop so that was an easy way to find the problem. The noise comes back a bit later but that's an easy way to diagnose it. I have a 2018 super duty that I have been meaning to replace that shaft for about a year because of that same noise just to busy fixing everyone else truck haha

I've had this issue on multiple trucks at the dealership, took me some time to realise it was the shaft, I rebuilt an entire front end chasing this problem at first 😂😂😂😅

Man I wish you were in Florida. I spent all weekend changing the fitting on the back of my HPOP because no one down here will work on an LCF!

Hi Mr A-Rod you power beast I had the same problem on my 2018 f-450 the top universal went first and then the bottom the second day I was getting a rubbing noise on the steering wheel and it was going on the column you can hear it and you can feel it every time you turn the steering wheel and when you turn the steering wheel it was rubbing the plastic column the mechanic was a newbie still wet behind the ears but anyway after getting the lead technician I told him what the problem was and they replaced my steering shaft and it operated perfectly until I got rid of the truck now I got a 22 f-450 no problems at all keep up the great videos

One piece solid shafts can kill you by letting a front impact force the steering wheel itself into your chest. The wheel isn't mounted in the column well enough to prevent the shaft driving the wheel out. That is why a collapsible shaft has been a requirement for over 50 years.

Arod how many miles on that 2019. Was it a ton of miles?. To it seems it went out way to easy. Great job. Now, I'm going to put that in my brain cells for the future if that noise pops up for me.

My 19 F-450 has a clunk I feel in the steering wheel when turning a certain way. Wonder if its the same thing.

Good chance it is. Mine would pop on turning left to right, but not right to left.

Off hand no. Tighten them down. They have lock tite on them

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. I've had a weird rattle in my peddles and steering wheel for many years and miles. I've done ball joints, shocks, steering stabilizer but nothing fixes the rattle. I always noticed a weird rubbing noise when I turn my steering wheel. This just may be the fix.

As a very capable Ford tech, you will always have something to do. I used to be a Ford enthusiast. I owned 2 6.0's, 2 6.7's. The last was a 2015 F350 King Ranch. At 48 k the dealership had to replace my motor due to under spec compression in # 2 cylinder. They said it could be due to several issues??? They just replace the engine no further diagnosis. Send the engine back to Ford to tear it down as you know. Got it back, drove it for 2 weeks and traded it in for a Ram 3500 dually. Couldn't be more pleased. Really enjoy your videos but I hate Ford's now. Sorry, I would advise anyone not to buy a vehicle that has the blue oval.

This has been going on since the mid nineties, first TSB said to pack the slip shaft with Teflon grease, then eventually replace the lower intermediate steering shaft assembly. And yes, the slip shaft is supposed to "collapse" in the event of a frontal crash.
