the fact that Pilot never did anything bad, made the movie lackluster. they just made him the villain because of plot, but he never did made anyone suffer. there's no reasonable motivation why you should stop him from sharing his immortality thoughts (even tho it was stolen form his old partner which is really not enough)

It’s based on the premise of who ever wrote this story that immortality is wrong. And living and dying is the natural course of life. And extending one’s life isn’t natural or good so it needs to be extinguished. But trust me if people found the secret to immortality they would use it for themselves. Maybe a loved one or two.

this happens when you don't have the money to produce a decent distopian young adult sci-fi drama and you convolute the story so much that characters just talk all the time explaining and summarizing things each other because the budget doesn't allow a single action scene to enhance a flatline plot. George Lucas with a 1000th of the budget of this cheap schlock made thx 1138 in 1971...and in that masterpiece characters remain most of the time in silence!!!

Downsides of being immortal, 1. Living in poverty. 2. Getting tired of life. 3. Overpopulation. 4. Going insane due to living forever. 5. Lack of empathy due to living forever. 6. Feeling like life's a repeating loop. 7. Depression. 8. Suffering pain from disease or other things because you're only immortal, doesn't mean you can't feel physically/emotional pain. 9. Amnesia because you won't always remember things that happened, and the list goes on but it starts to get darker and you'll actually need to hear hear someone saying it because writing it doesn't really make sense so i won't continue.

You are describing mortals, ageing ones notably. To keep your 25 yo capacity to explore the world, the emotions and the people won't get you depressed. And immortals have much more opportunity to solve problems of limited resources and equality than mortals rushing to be the one with "the more tools at his dead", as one dummy billionairs stated it. Achievement is what you can pass, not what you owns. So it's never ending.

@there_it_goes
@there_it_goes 2 жыл бұрын
@jigi the thing about immortals (humans exactly) is that, they can be idiots, due to the fact that in the end, we're all human. So although immortals have much more time to fix things (basically like an infinity), that doesn't change the fact that they're knowledge isn't lacking, the highest IQ score is only at 228 after all. Making some immortal doesn't change the fact that you aren't stupid, sure you have literally an infinity to live meaning that humanity can learn LOADS of things they weren't able to before, but as I said about the downsides of being immortals, just because your immortal doesn't mean you can suffer the same type of shit a normal, specifically an aging, mortal can't. Maybe, as humanity developed some of those factors will disappear but not all, living forever sounds amazing but, the feeling of tiredness from living so long will be the thing that'll get you. Plus, we don't truly know the elements of immortality, you could still age.

I wish humans lived a bit longer and didn't age as fast. So somebody in their 70s might feel 40ish. I feel like it's part of the human experience to grow old. But really think some of us could do with more time in a active healthy body. Immortality sounds like such a chore.
@Morpheus-pt3wq

That´s entirely up to you. If you maintain healthy lifestyle, you may not feel old even in your 70s. Besides, most people start suffering from diseases, when they retire - as they get out of the daily rhytm, they had to maintain, while working. So for old people to have long and healthy life, our society should include them until the very end. Instead of abandoning them the moment, they´re too old to do their work. If you start suffering from health issues early, it´s because of your past wrongdoings against your body. Except cancer, which is an unlucky accident.

Immortality is no curse, and only limited fools can think that. Most movies about it are mere attempts at making a dream look bad because it is still beyond our reach, like "I can´t have that anyway, so let me convince myself it´s not really as good as it seems". Aging, being ill, suffering, dying against your will is the real curse we are burdened with. Living without aging is heavenly, and there is a whole UNIVERSE to be learned, experienced, discovered, which should occupy ever-young people for thousands of years or even scores of thousands. Losing emotions? Ridiculous, quite the opposite! Imagine loving someone for a thousand years and then loving for a thousand more! And of course, there are several degrees to being immortal. There is ammortality, there is immortality, and there is indestructibility. And finally, death will always be an option, for those who really decide they do not want to exist anymore, you can die anytime YOU want.

I like the movie, but it's just another "anti-living/pro-death" sentiment. If a scientific breakthrough like this is ever discovered, emotions would unlikely be affected as other bodily functions. Also for those asking about overpopulation or life becoming "meaningless", this would only be applied to a select few. Mostly wealthy people, but I'll make sure at least those people would be smart, empathetic and would strive self-improvement. So if you don't like immortality, np! You're not that important. Those trying to achieve it wouldn't even care to force it onto you.

Even IF we figure out how to stop aging (which most media focus on) it's not real immortality because you can still die from unnatural causes like wounds or accidents, and even IF you live long enough you'd still be dying at the heat death of the universe, or any sort of civilization-collapsing catastrophe, so any way you look at it you're not immortal. How to cope with those challenges is actualy a fascinating topic given the slow rise of anti-aging research but it's always easier to come up with an idiotic strawman dystopia with a DYING = GOOD LIVING = BAD premise.

Lazy writing. No real discussions on benefits, consequences, and solutions to mitigate obvious problems. No, they had to resort to mind control to try to invalidate the whole idea. That Justin Timberlake movie (In Time) was better thought out and much more inventive where people paid with time. There is also a fiction series (Scythe) by Neal Shusterman where an AI controlled the world (and is the good guy for once) to ensure an immortal humanity was taken care of and a method to control the population was put in place (because a previous solution failed) was much more thought provoking. Personally, I wouldn't mind being healthy and functionally immortal as long as I'm also allowed to choose to die like in the TV show "The Good Place". So many avenues to explore and yet this movie squandered it.

Immortality would become quite miserable the longer you live. Without eventual death, life has no meaning, it's just bland, pointless existence. Everything we do, everything we strive for, hopes and dreams are all driven by the fact that our lives are short/limited. Living forever, people would sooner or later begin commiting suicides as they get sick and tired of living. That being said, living for several centuries would be pretty nice, although many would get tired of living even by that point.

@@komiks42 Sure, there is a lot to explore in life, but even that has a limit. Say, after some centuries you would have explored literally everything life has to offer on this entire planet, tried all food, traveled everywhere, etc, what then? As humans we constantly need something ''new'', or refreshing, something to keep us going. but when you've experienced everything, you stagnate and through stagnation we eventually wither away. In the worst case, mental disorders would be rampant across the globe, severe anxiety, depression, psychosis even - in other words we would gradually lose our minds. Admittedly space exploration would make immortality more bearable, but you need a highly advanced civilization, else such exploration would take thousands upon thousands of years due to technical limitations, which would be unbearable without some kind of cryo-sleep. Space is far too vast to be explored in the traditional sense. A single century is like a blink of an eye in space travel.

@@komiks42 Problem is not physical, but mental/psychological, being stuck on a space ship for centuries - you would literally lose your mind. Ok but, what the hell does this movie has to say about immortality? The main subject it tackles is free will and critical thinking vs control over the masses. The premise makes you think that it's going to have some philosophical take in favor of mortality and against immortality, but that's not what the movie is about at all. There are no issues caused by immortality in this movie, not even overpopulation. It basically uses immortality as this good thing that the main character questions. As in, everyone thinks this is good and it IS good but the fact that the main character disagrees makes him special and better even though his argument is wrong....So, the main character is an antivaxer?

John 8:12 [12]Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Luke 6:27-38 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 6:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 6:34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Matthew 5:2-12 King James Version 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew 24:4-14 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Exodus 20 King James Version 20 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. ..,..,..,.., .......... .......... .......... ,........., ,....,,....,,

Isn't being Immortal suppose to be a good thing? The endless possibilities of adventures, love, kids, sex with endless women or men (not trying to be sexual), and lived past 100 years while still looking young. Also knowing that nothing can keep that person dead, I rather take immortality than mortality. Prometheus from Greek mythology would say immortality is a curse, but I think of it as a blessing.

Immortality is a curse, death is literally part of life, simply taking it away means you just exist, not live. If you think of it as a blessing then if you were the only person with immortality, all your friends and families would die, extreme boredom and the depressing feeling of being alive for years with nothing changing at all. When the world ends, its just you floating in space with nothing to do, weeks, years, decades etc, passes and you wish to die but you can't. Immortality is not a blessing, you don't live, you just simply exist thus making it a curse.

"The endless possibilities of adventures, love, kids..." Humans are social creatures. We can feel love, hatred, hope, despair, joy, sorrow, and so on. In an immortal world these things are no longer something to be treasured and now merely a matter of inevitability, quite literally. Therefore, these things lose their meaning. An unsatiable hole forms in our hearts that can never be filled; only grow and grow and grow. You would come to find that no amount of wives, children, rollercoasters, etc. would quench that unending thirst for more - because when we have everything, we value nothing. It's really not. It's the basic "human become immortal, now what" trope that anyone in their life has thought about at least once
@문아대
@문아대 2 жыл бұрын
@@yasininn76 I wasn't talking about the trope, I was talking about the story. The storyline to be exact. I haven't watch the movie yet but I feel listening to the recap is really do like reading a manga, somehow. Maybe it's the recap, maybe it is indeed similar to many existential psychology manga. The male lead somehow is different from the rest? Check. Bonus point that in the recap it's not explained how and why. The female lead was an enemy redeemed to be an ally because of 'emotions'? Check The other female lead become important and becoming the plot point itself? Check The villain somehow took over the world and we can only seen so many of how the world has become, no topics regarding the new civilization, new cultures, etc. it's just a plain hero story without much world building (just like many manga, which isn't bad considering there were many life lessons hidden sometimes) Idk about you, but I don't think the above points (and many others that I don't mention because I can't think about it as I write this but you'll get my idea) is common among western entertainment media. This 'manga' template is usually used by eastern authors that want to convey their message without adding much unnecessary details to their listeners/readers. From this, I conclude that the movie is inspired by the likes of Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy, and so on much more than classic western sci-fi movies that talks about the macrocosm more than microcosm of a human (oblivion, interstellar, total recall)

If everyone became immortal and a group of us wanted to literally die, why would we stop them?

Same reason why we stop people doing suicide even when we humans are overpopulated on earth. I understand what you meant to say but still we as humans would rather lock our people and see them daily against their wish rather than let them die as per their choice. It is a part of human nature.

Being immortal would be the best. No, you won't crave death at any point, with time you'll grow numb to psychological pain and suffering, and you could experience the entire world with all the unlimited time you have. People who say death is what gives life meaning are just deluded people who have been told so much that death is inevitable that they started to see it as a good thing. Death is not a good thing for the individual, in any way.
