Saw this at theaters. Had never heard of it. Was on a date. Had no expectations . It blew my mind. Went home , my mom was on here way to book club. She asked what I saw and it turned out that was her book club book that week . Sean Penn was a beast this movie.

Saw this in the theater Also. I said right then & there Tim Robbins would win for best Supporting actor & it would have other nominations maybe winning which it did. Penn won for Best actor

You gotta watch Ben Affleck's directing debut ''Gone Baby Gone'' (2007), from the same writer of ''Mystic River'' Dennis Lehane. That movie is really terrific!

Stacked cast, Sean Penn was phenomenal in that first breaking down scene, I heard he needed oxygen after that

Have you seen The Pledge, which Penn directed before this? He cut out a brief scene with Mickey Rourke who plays a grieving father - you can find it on KZbin - and Penn clearly channelled what he saw from Rourke's performance. Well worth checking out. Heartbreaking stuff.

Awesome selection, as usual. This and Sleepers (1996) are real winners in term of being gutting and all-around phenomenal cast performances. And yer right, I too like Clint's direction, even more when he's not in the flick. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is one of his that you might wanna try sometime. That and Absolute Power has his daughter in it as well, though more so in Midnight.

He's a far better director than actor. I might get skewered for saying so but as far as I can tell he can only play one character.

When they picked child actors to play the kid versions of Jimmy, Dave and Sean, shouldn't that dark haired kid who played Sean, instead should have acted as Jimmy? Considering Jimmy (Sean Penn) had dark hair as an adult? But then again, that light haired, badass kid who played Jimmy had facial features that looked more like the adult Jimmy.

The ending was awkward. They had this set up for Sean vs Jimmy then all of a sudden its understood Dave was murdered for a crime he didn't commit... but a bad thing happened to him as a kid so okay? I guess we're supposed to think of it as Dave isn't suffering anymore but really he was killed by his best friend who will then go make out with his wife and is cop best friend will let it go. I really enjoyed the movie until it was clear there will be no consequences. I thought Daves wife would've been right to leave but she also did have her role in what happened because she had to know what Jimmy would do, he didn't hide who he was at all. Between this and Spotlight I suggest watching a comedy to cleanse yourself of abuse movies.

Dave's wife is also in the movie "Meet Joe Black". Her name is Marcia Gay Harden. It's also a good movie in my opinion.
