CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jimmy (Sean Penn) confronts Dave (Tim Robbins) about killing his daughter, but Dave admits to killing a child molester.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the mysterious drama Mystic River is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane and adapted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave are three childhood friends who are reunited after a brutal murder takes place. Reformed convict Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) and his devoted wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) find out that their teenage daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) has been beaten and killed. Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is the homicide detective assigned to the case, along with partner Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne). Jimmy also gets his relatives, the Savage brothers (Adam Nelson and Robert Wahlberg), to conduct an investigation of their own. Jimmy and Sean both start to suspect their old pal, Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), who lives a quiet life with his wife Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) but harbors some disturbing secrets. Clint Eastwood won a Golden Coach for Mystic River at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

That's why torture and fear tactics dont work. People will say anything you want to hear to stop the pain. Poor dave admitted to something he didn't do just because he was promised he could go back and see his family.

@@neurodivtries4101 Yep, torture "always" works. If I were to be unlucky to be in a spot where some interrogator is about to start pulling my fingernails and wants me to just admit to something I havent done or tell them something I dont know then I'll tell them whatever they want to hear JUST to avoid the unnecessary pain. 😐 For some just the fear of the pain will make them do or say whatever and therefore it wouldnt be a 100% reliable way of getting information out of people (note that im not saying it absolutely cant be reliable just that it wont be always successful or efficient). Then again people have different definition or views on what torture is and also what (or how far) of a type of torture we are talking about. I dont believe torture as a interrogation works for every scenarios or individuals. However going off topic abit I do believe that there should be torture as a form of punishment for the most vile, evil and disgusting criminals that are out there. (given that there is beyond any doubt that they have the right individual) Sorry for a long and unsolicited reply and for any bad spelling and/or incorrect grammar (english is not my first language).

@@randomtuber7420 I don't know. It really takes proving the point better in the best way possible in my opinion. Tim's character was extremely unconvincing from the start when he had to make it in all his power to prove his innocence. This is the major point of confliction in this scene - the fact that a point of agreement could not be delivered. It's sad when lies, false truths, and emotions get in the way of these situations.

I hated Jimmy. Everything bad that happened to him and the rest of them is his own doing, starting when they were kids. Everything. He is the one that started the writing on the side walk, he was the one that was robbing everything that put him in jail, he is the one that killed Harris that left his wife alone to raise her kids, and that in turn caused one of them to kill Katie. Everything is all Jimmy's fault and he never takes responsibility for it.

They weren't best friends, and barley had spoken to one another since they were kids. Dave even said something to the effect in the movie that it took the death of Jimmy's daughter for them to become friends again. At the end of the movie Jimmy was sitting on the sidewalk drunk. Why was he drunk? Because he killed Dave. You could tell he was upset, but like with his daughter, he couldn't cry.

He was forcing Dave to say that he killed Katy so that Jimmy could find peace, his character is so blinded by the lust for revenge that he's ready to kill anyone based on the smallest facts, without thinking through the situation. Basically Celeste gave the go ahead, she betrayed her husband, that's low, she didn't even had a proof, no one did , they just all jumped on poor, troubled Dave. While Jimmy's wife Annabeth backed up her husband even though she knew he killed Dave. Tim's character died for nothing and even more frustrating is the fact that the cop knew that but he lets Jimmy go anyway leaving things for him without consequences, I mean come on , old buddy or not the law is for everyone, the guy just killed someone. Great movie, outstanding prequel and writing the only one of Eastwood movies that I actually like and to me the best one he ever made. Thanks for the upload MOVIECLIPS, I was looking for that particular scene for quite some time now.

bottle1 lack Yeah, he killed someone. But I don´t believe everyone who murders deserves punishment from the law: many people kill in self-defense, out of enormous tension, out of desperation, etc. In his case, Dave had a flashback of a horrible childhood trauma and was astonished when the pedophile slayed him. What's more, he saved that poor prostitute. In my opinion, he should have been left alone.

bottle1 lack Sean knows he killed him. He let him go then because he knew evidence will show up incriminating Jimmy later. That's while at the parade Sean makes a gun with his hand and points at Jimmy. In my opinion this symbolizes he knew's Jimmy did it and that there's only a matter of time before the law catches him.

Yeah, you are right the wife had no proof and the same goes for Sean Penn. But you as a viewer think the same. It is not till the last act that you find out that Tim didn't kill her. I would have seen a happy ending, but then I thought that is not how it is in real life. Just like a similar movie from 2014. The only character that I found stupid was the wife of Penn when she find it normal that Penn killed Robbins.

+Chris S Jimmy went straight for his daughter katie whereas initially he was a gangster. When his daughter got killed that changed everything because she was the thing that had made him change his life. At the end of the movie as his wife said he 's gonna become the king of the city. Jimmy is basically back to the ganster path again and I think sean knows it and when he makes a gun with his hand, it just means he will do everything he can to stop jimmy not just because he killed dave, but because he knows that jimmy has gone back to his old ways.

One of the most gut wrenching downer endings. There is no catharsis, you just feel unsatisfied and irritated that the situation got resolved like this. Very few movies achieve this. For example when Mel Gibson dies at the end of Braveheart, it's moving, but it doesn't feel unsatisfactory. There's a poignance to the death. This however reminds me of American History X, where the ending is logical considering what happened in the film, but it's so disappointing it leaves a bad taste.

It's unresolved but heavily implied that Sean will eventually take Jimmy down for his crimes. Kind of wish Dennis Lehane had written a sequel just so we could finally see them go head to head and possibly see Jimmy in jail for what he did to Dave, but maybe this ending is perfect the way it is and leaving it up to the audience's imagination is better.

So surethey made him drunk and confused but its still just bad writing cause we would sense bullshit and so should Jimmy. We can always make the case that jimmy wanted to kill anyone to get engeance but still, that he doesnt belive daves innocence is absurd.

Honestly after watching this movie in 2013, for some reason this made me go and straight beat the living thing out of Sean Penn savagely even if he is good actor, i was so much into the movie that i forgot some things are in reality. I don't remember some other scenes like this that make me genuinely destroy someone, there are but, i was so emotional while i was watching the movie and the most while i was watching this scene.

@@spirittammyk And even if return of the king won, which is not much more then 150 minutes of awesome CGI,it should never have won 11,they just gave the film those to compensate and reward the trilogy as a whole which is NOT how awards should work, they just punished movies that tried to tell a story and did that the same year. It won soundmixing when it wasnt even nominated for sound,it won best screenplay and the movie is 78 % action....This is bullshit since when it comes to winning and not nominating, everyone gets to vote so knowing a movie should probably win is enough for these people. The first one got robbed and is a masterpiece but to give these awards to a movie that you cant even enjoy if you havent seen the two predecessors is absurd.
