Hi Christo, found your channel 3-4 weeks ago. I really enjoy the work you have published. I am 52 and play off a 3.5 index. Your videos/comments on having lost distance trying to find the fairway resonated with me. I have always hit a long ball however this year I am not much more then 240-250 off the tee and my scoring has suffered on par 5's. I took your short thumb and stronger grip to the range today and was hammering the ball, I had scoped a back tree on the range and I was flying my straight drives and slight pulls into the middle of the tree at 240 so I am assuming that I was carrying the ball 250+. I had a slight pull and then baby fade back, this is not a problem as that can be worked with on the course.the sound of the ball was really good coming off the club face. I did however find that 30% of my drives were deep but they started right (like a block and then a big slice), this is uncommon for my swing. My question is...Is this possible from being to close to the ball. I have been working hard on starting my downswing with the ground and dropping my right elbow down. Are there any of your previous videos I should take a look at or do you have any suggestions. Thank you in advance for any response.

Excellent video and I also have moved back to a stronger grip. I can tell from watching your driver swing you are much flatter than me in the backswing which I am sure helps you in many ways? I have a much steeper swing which is not working well with the driver? It's easy for me to hit either a smothered hook or even lose drives way right. I am definitely going to work on flattening my backswing and keeping my right elbow under the left like you state here. I will be looking for more videos you make using a strong grip. Cheers!

It's genuinely spooky how similar this is to the transition I've made in my later years. Flipped the club through impact for 35 years and decided I either find a new way to swing, or quit for good. Got help from a former Canadian tour pro (who also had to start his swing from scratch because it was costing him money on tour). He was taught the Hogan method of release and has passed it on to me. It's taken a long time to get the brain rewired, but it's working big time. So frustrating to know that this knowledge has been out there since Mr. Hogan made his swing changes back in '46. Better late than never ;) Thanks for the great content.

If you are looking for the last 15% of carrying distance, you are now going to have to focus on your real actual launch conditions - spin and angle of attack. It would appear from your ball placement and slow motion swings, that your AoA is probably around 0 - and thus your spin & launch can still be made more optimal for launch. There is a good video out by TXG golf that shows with the exact same swing speed that if you can take your AoA from a Player Avg of -2 to -1 to +3 to +4 you will basically gain 13% carry distance for free. Justin Thomas has two swings he uses - one is +2 AoA and one is +5 when he goes for Max distance. Keopka is actually one of the older swing style hold outs, but he has a 186mph ball speed, he apparently is avg -1 (uses it for his trap fade). The young long bombers are all +3 to +5 AoA with sub 2000rpm spin with their driver. If you go to a launch monitor you will see that to get those types of numbers you need to have the ball slightly more forward and you need it teed higher. Your new stronger grip will work great so you may as well embrace the the rest of the modern high launch low spin hit up on it driver swing as well. Embrace the insanity. Nice video
@kylecorrigan24496 жыл бұрын
Paul O'Neil 186 mph ball speed you mean not club head speed that would be funny tho I completely agree with what you’re saying regardless
@wallstreetoneil6 жыл бұрын
Sorry ball speed yes - it is hard to believe it when you see it on screen. I have raised mine from 145'ish to low-mid 150s and now aiming for 160 as a reach goal. 186 is just mind bending. I went to the Canadian Open and saw DJ on #18 hitting it 185mph and flying it 330 with a lob wedge into the Par5
@somemass4726 жыл бұрын
Yes, incredible gains to be had from optimizing launch conditions. Definitely requires some getting used to: teeing up higher, more forward in stance, even different alignment since a forward ball position changes the path direction at impact. One may need to change their clubhead and shaft to reap the full benefits of this change - a club optimized for a neutral or downward AoA will probably launch too high and spin too much when used with a positive AoA. Most people that try my driver can't hit it over a cart... and most drivers I try fly straight up with massive loss of distance.

I used the same neutral grip for 40 yrs until I saw a TV analyst at the recent US Open point our a Pro who used a neutral left combined with a strong right. The analyst also pointed out the player's shorter backswing as a model for improved consistency. Something about both comments struck me, so since then, I have worked diligently at both applying both concepts and what a difference! I was never long, but have gained at least a club or two because of center face contact much more often. Point is, don't be afraid to make adjustments out of your comfort zone, and if you do stick with it - give each adjustment a good long test drive.

This video is perfect for driving. I’m telling you mate I switched to a stronger grip with Driver with less wrist rotation and it’s given me another 20 to 30 yards. I’m peaking 300 yards now on a good day. You can really rip it. What these PGA pros fail to understand is the traditional Ben hogan neutral grip they teach is outdated. The games moved on. All the top pros have super strong grips like DJ, Bubba, Koepka. Go Strong and hit it long.

I swing VERY similar. My teacher converted me to a "linear force " golf swing. I also had a terrible smother hook on my drive. Now its gone! On the downswing the very first thing is to rip your LEFT shoulder up and away from your chin. (think 6-8 inches way. even though this isnt what happens lol). On your smother you hit in the video...two things. your shoulder pattern is flat on the down swing and you hang back on the flip. I used to think the EXACT same thing with my right elbow staying underneath the plane etc. Its too hard to manage. Just think move left with the lower body on the downswing and your left shoulder MUST move up and away. you WILL NOT come over the plane and/or right elbow wont be lost. my fault then was leaving the ball out right because I was used to holding it off and staying back on my right foot. Make sure you rip that left shoulder up and away so your shoulders stay tilted. Once I got used to its unleash the bomb central.

Oohhh my f...... god. I have to try this. You said it all and it makes sense toward how I play. First off all I play only once a week. I drive it sooo bad I have to use my "go to club" way to often (Adams Idea Pro Black 20°). Makes me have 7, 6 and 5 irons to the green. My drive is almost always a straight push, sometimes a push fade and I hit it long, so it is always in the woods. (Meaning I come nicely from the inside. When it is in the fairway, I have a 50° to 9 iron in the hand and always make a par with a look at birdie. Next range session I will make my right hand stronger (Lefty). Keep my head back (one of my problems) and elbow under and hit it hard towards the target, with the thought of a fade shot. No rolling, or little, with the underarm. Looking forward trying this. Thanks.

Christo, I went to a strong baseball grip just with my driver and it feels so comfortable - like the hammer blow you mention. there is no question that with modern drivers, grip and AoA are radically different than what they were doing 50+ years ago with persimmon drivers. could you discuss this divergence more? it is very interesting.

Cristo, this is uncanny. For the last three years I have been fighting a terrible snap hook with my driver. I almost quit the game several times. No matter what I did, the face would snap closed at impact. Even when I somehow managed to hit it straight (very rare) it was a very low shot. I had the same thought as you regarding the right elbow. If the right elbow is under the left at impact, the club face is far less likely to be closed at impact. Now the question became, "how do I do that?". That's when I made my right hand grip stronger and it has made a huge difference. This has taught me that I should not be trying "tips and "secrets" to try and play better. That's liking taking medicine for an illness you don't have. Rather, look at your ball flight and let that be your coach.

The neutral grip is greatly over rated. Every coach I had tried to get me to utilize the neutral grip, but it never worked for me. I wasted 10 years trying to make it happen because I thought, that was the grip all the best golfers used, especially Tiger Woods. I went to GolfTec 3 years ago, who are technique agnostic, and they said that in my case, I'm better off going back to a strong grip. With me, the problem with the neutral grip is that it promoted flipping at impact, I tended to block right or slice on my misses, and it diminished my full club head speed potential. I suffered for years trying to cure a flip at impact, the resulting ballooning ball flight and block and slice right misses. Going back to a strong grip eliminated all that mess and I gained a more penetrating ball flight with slight draw and pretty much eliminated the dreaded slice. It also helped me get my hands ahead of ball at impact consistently to hit down on the ball better, resulting in more compression and better ball flight. I also learned that many big hitters on PGA Tour utilize a strong grip, like DJ, Rory, Bubba and many others. Like putting, I believe grip is a very personal thing, and should not be taught as a standard technique. Neutral is probably a good starting point, but I think as you get better at the game, you should experiment with many different techniques and utilize techniques that work for your body.

Looking good. Love the deweights pressure shift pivot. That's what I see as your best improvement the last months. You know it's impossible to define grip strength cause everyone's anatomy is so different and wrist mobility and forearm mobility vary gratly in people. How one's arms naturally off the shoulders is a good tell how one should hold the club. The more the palms are pointed behind one the "stronger" there best grip will appear. In the left hand that is, but the right will appear "weak". So I just don't see a way to generalize about what constitutes a strong grip. Highly individual. Bad mistake imo for us to copy a player's grip. Face angle and shaft flex via how kicked forward the head is at impact have a huge impact on best grip for the long game too. Interestingly, Hogan's woods we're quite hook faced for example. It's matching all the variables more than strong vs weak me thinks. Trevino comes to mind also, "strong" grip yet supreme fader. It's complicated. DJ, super strong gip and fader. So I think we need to put the strong/weak stuff out to pasture and start a different concept. Grip related to anatomy and club specs and preferred ball flight. By no means does your grip look 'sgrong" to me. Looks "proper" for you. Anyway, looking good there Christo.

Watch Dustin at impact... his right hand seems to be facing the target, his left hand seems to be facing out to the right ...did you notice this?

Are you using that strong grip with your irons as well?

Not quite as strong with the iron grips.

What do you think of the swing of Canadian tour pro Brooke Henderson? (aside for her idiosyncrasy of choking down on the grip... she chokes down but has a 48" driver so it probably works out the same). I'm Canadian so she's a favourite...and she hits the driver out there pretty good...about 280 I think. For the women's tour I think she's in the top 3 or 4 drivers for length.

I don't know her swing well.

What are the benefits of a weak grip?
@zZrEtRiBuTiOnZz6 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Hogan had a hook problem for a while, maybe it was only a problem after his accident, idk. All I know is I heard he had a weak grip because he was trying to prevent the ball from going left. Now, I'm just guessing here, but I imagine that likely meant he could aim for left-center, and work it slightly left to right. That baby fade can be crazy accurate. Again, no idea what ball flight he actually had, although I imagine it changed over the years.

No that was before the accident and his “ Power Golf “ publication after the accident he stood more erect and adopted a weaker grip as advocated in The Modern Fundementals “ in the early fifties.

Strong grip is the best grip you just have to learn how to control it.

The two best players of all time (Tiger and Jack) and also Hogan all have grips that are effectively neutral with the V in their thumbs pointing to their right shoulder which is what is recommended. You can play with a strong grip but you are going to have to make compensations to not hook it which brings more timing into play. Your grip has nothing whatsoever to do with your swing path. If you have a poor swing path going to strong won't change it. Lessons will.

You are totally wrong. If you have a stronger grip you feel the clubhead is straigthening without any compensations or flip. If you feel it you are able to hit much easier from the inside and delay the hit automatically. There are other great players than Jack and Woods and the swing evolves all the time as does equipment.

Spine tilt, that's Todd Graves/Moe Norman.

Strong is long. There are 0 long drive competitors that use a neutral or weak grip. This tells me that if you want to hit it long you need a strong grip. Your spine tilt back away from the target becomes necessary. And like you said, it's easier to keep our head behind the ball.

Do you agree with this interesting thought, a weak grip is easier to bow the wrist and a strong grip is easier to cup...interesting conundrum
