I want to do this in an extremely tall building and not set it on fire, just to see how tall of a bubble tower I could make. There is a limit. The limit is the point at which the lift generated by the methane gas from bubble column at height "x" overcomes the surface tension of the cross section of the column at column width "y". Basically the wider your column is, the higher it can technically go before breaking. When it breaks, the column bubble would just floats into the sky. 2 years too late for the necropost.

we used to do this in the chem lab a couple of times a year, you can actually handle methane lit bubbles and juggle them. Coat your arms in the soapy water, and don't be wearing hairspray or similar one can juggle burning methane bubbles (might singe the hairs on ones arms a little, but methane burns fast enough that skin doesn't start to burn). and yes, add a little glycerine to make it stable with that many bubbles.

For the people that wanna try this at home or already tried but failed... they keyword here is 'glycerine'. You can buy it at any drugstore... You should read the comments you're replying to before you comment. Someone asked if helium would create a rising column of bubbles without the flame. I said, "should work with helium." Thanks for showing us your profound knowledge of chemistry. I should hope everyone knows that helium is non-flammable. By the way, nuclear fusion (in the sun) isn't flame. Helium doesn't "burn" in the sun, in fact, very little of it even fuses in a main sequence star.
