The problem with the "First to move loses" myth is they're not simulating a real dual. They wouldn't just be swinging the same motion, from the same distant, at each other every single time to see who hits first. Even if both parties were adopting an aggressive strategy, or defensive strategy, they wouldn't just parrot each other's moves. There's parries, counters, dodges, blocks, and many other maneuvers. What the myth is trying to say is that the person adopting the defensive strategy will be able to intuit the opponent's attack, and choose the proper move to defend and counter. Of course it's a gross generalization to say that the defender is always going to be the winner. Skill level is going to play a huge part in that. Statistically speaking however, the defender has the advantage. Beyond that, it's also a parable about patience.

I always had an issue with this episode, the strike first myth is due to "parry lunge" there is a similar myth in European sword fighting. when an enemy is in a defensive stance your at a disadvantage if you attack.

Yes I think if you were drawing from sheath then there could be a parry counter attack that is better if you were good enough.

The other thing with the gun vs thrown knife situation is that the knife thrower has expended his weapon. The gunslinger can simply dedicate all his attention to dodging the throw, then take his shot afterwards.

A Six Shooter is a different beast than a mock Deagle. But the 20-foot rule exists for a reason. I can't remember the little Philippino dudes name, but he was one of the first to show police that someone with a knife will mess you up before you can get a shot off within 20 feet. That guy was able to space that until he was quite old and unassuming.

i think fire dragons were more of a scare tactic, imagine how you'd feel if you see barrage of fire dragons coming towards you? even if they have low accuracy, it would still be scary as hell staring into the mouth of fire dragon army. also it could be used to set forests on fire or shooting at armies of enemies from great distances

Although the fire dragon did not work so well it was quite cool. And I guess if they faced a large crowd-like army of Orcs covering a landscape (LOTR style) they surely would have hit some of them 😁

One thing about the "Action VS Reaction" that I felt was not right is... It's Kendo, I assume "counters" aren't a thing. But if counter action is to be allowed, there is a possibility that Reaction can win by reading the action and processing the adequate move to intercept and counter.

@Sethioz

how about bringing a knife-pistol hybrid into a gun fight? imagine a pistol with attached knives that can be released by gripping the grip and then swinging the pistol, it would send knives flying a lot faster than just throwing them and you can quick-release knives by just gripping the pistol really hard and swinging it, so by just pulling it from holster, you would have enough momentum to send the knife flying. it probably existed, at least i'd make something like that if i was living in those times and it was life or death situations all the time. or have a single knife and have some kind of wire or rope attached to it, so you can pull it back

The only way a knife thrower wins in that situation is if he Throws the knife in a unfair to the duel ways method, throw the knife while the gunman isn't looking, isn't squared up or whatever. And a knife isn't going to be an instant kill even if he throws it and it cuts the jugular vein or whatever. Knife guy throws knife, hits perfect shot, gunman can still have a few seconds just to turn around and take a shot. And back in those days, a gun shot is most likely a death sentence.

I'd say let the show rest in peace, and glory. Forever. Better to stop when you are ahead and beloved, than continue on until you become despised. Given what has happened to many popular movie franchises lately, I say we leave Mythbusters be. A glorious show it was, and so it shall remain! Let us not spoil that which is already great with our own possibly misguided efforts at improvement.

some issues i had with the knife vs gun myth, 1) adam probably isn`t fast to begin with, 2) some quick drawers don`t even take their gun out they shoot it in the holster saving time, 3) how much time did adam waste cocking that gun, could he have not had it already cocked and ready to fire, and lastly not every knife strike is a kill shot, just how many knives would someone bring to a fight.

@MythBusters I have an idea for a new topic that I think will be interesting: I remember you testing fuel economy with a car comparing a flat surface and a golf--ball dimpled surface and finding thst the dimpled surface had increased fuel economy which means less drag. I was wondering if you had considered doing that with an aircraft?

I wonder if it is allowed to pull on the handle in Kendo, using the upper hand to hold the handle, and the other hand below to pull the handle towards you to make the sword go down quicker. That acceleration would compensate for the reaction time, but i guess that isn't allowed in Kendo, but it might work in any other setting?
@thetruestinsanegamer10
@thetruestinsanegamer10 5 ай бұрын
Maybe. But I'm pretty sure a real sword is heavier, which would possibly mitigate any benefits from that in a sword fight.
@Games_and_Music
@Games_and_Music 5 ай бұрын
@@thetruestinsanegamer10 Probably, because it's not a full swing, so there is less momentum behind it and it becomes more like a blunt object, but as a reflex it could be enough to crack a skull, poke an eye out, or do some other damage before the other guy hits you, and if lucky, misses you. But yeah, it'd just be better to try and dodge it, or block it properly, than risking a double KO.
@seventhfold4852

Short answer, no, it's not allowed in Kendo. Long answer, there are three components to actually scoring in kendo - a successful strike, clear decisive intent, and a shout. The issue arises with the second point, which is that your strike be clear and decisive. This is usually shown by following through on the cut, or stomping into the cut (preferably both). Striking as described, using the right hand as a fulcrum, will end with your left hand above your right, which twists the body around and makes this followthrough difficult. Additionally, you'll lose power striking in this way (most of the speed and power in a strike comes from the full body movement, pushing yourself forwards in concert with your strike). So no, you'll not see a point scored with this kind of strike. Source: practiced Kendo for 5 years, and reached shodan. Also corrected this same problem shown by multiple beginners.

People often wonder why police draw their guns when faced with a potentially dangerous scenario - “doesn’t that escalate tension”, they wonder? Well, this episode shows why they do that - if someone decides to charge at you with a knife, they can cover a very surprising amount of distance very, very quickly. Yes, if you’re encountering a mentally disturbed person with a knife, approaching with your weapon drawn could make them more agitated. But if you were a police officer, having seen this video, would you want to be left in a position of having to draw, cock and aim your weapon when being charged at by a knife wielding suspect? I would not. I’ve seen some rather harrowing body cam videos of very deranged people charging full pelt at police with a knife, and even WITH their guns out of their holster, the police barely have enough time to defend themselves (and no tasers don’t always work, and I’ve seen them do NOTHING against a fully psychotic person)

OK, but 10 * 10 = just 100 arrows, but to be realistic you would need to fire at least 600 rockets or more, I've watched movies which we know are not so true but the archers in one show filled the sky with so many arrows it was like raining arrows. Archers with longbows can fire arrows fairly quickly let us say 1 every 4 seconds for at least 15 arrows per minute * let us say a small army of 400 archers is like 400*15 = 6,000 arrows per minute, did you fire 600 fire dragons, nope you fired what 7 that worked, and your enemy army is like what 20 or 30 guys do not need a fire dragon it needs let's say 30 to 100 guys on a wall. So that was fun and cool but 100 real archers would be even cooler, and just real longbow users.

I have a feeling these guys have no clue how to shoot a handgun with fast efficient hands that never leave the hip, just draw the gun from the holster level the muzzle at the attacker and fire, if you can train your eye to see the bullet you can fix the aim if you missed and if you get hit by a knife so what, unless it pierces your heart or cuts the jug in your keck you should have time easily for 3 or 4 more kill shots since now it's just what .3 seconds per squeeze or less maybe I'm not sure I never could see the bullet nor can I shoot a handgun well but some people can. I guess if you suck at the hip shot you could keep raising the gun and sight, I mean pros do it in 3 seconds in Olympic competition and they bring the gun all the way up, so the knife guy at best should have to kill the gunner in 3 seconds or less, sure maybe if they are well inside 20 feet, what is the police rule for trouble zone?

From every real rocket I've seen built your rockets are the worst I have ever seen. Sorry, from what I have seen that baby should be covered in fiberglass or something like that. Hey, I'm no rocket guy I just watch videos and no one flies a rocket with just glued-on fins. Also from test one, it seems like you should have a tin or steel sheet to protect the back of the rocket from the igniting rocket arrows, so the rocket doesn't explode during the attack. However, it still looked cool.
@gordonbrinkmann
@gordonbrinkmann 5 ай бұрын
Well, they started off from trying to be close to the historical thing. They said they used modern materials to built them quicker and easier but still keep the weight and rocket power close to "original", so I don't think it would have been going well with people always complaining how they do not get something accurate enough if they went with fiberglass and steel sheets. I did not get the impression their aim was to built the most accurate modern rockets.
