When my brother and I were little, we would often visit our grandpa's farm for several days. Every night when our grandpa put us to bed, he would tell us a story about Paul. My brother and I were convinced that he was real. One day we found a small rusty ax while messing around in the woods, and we brought it to grandpa telling him with excitement that we had found Paul Bunyan's ax. Also, every morning we would wake up early, grind flour, and make flapjacks. Those were magical feeling days. If you think that this was a long time ago, it wasn't. I am only 15 as I write this.

As a small child I was told this story many times over by my grandparents. A part of me always suspected that the legend had a kernel of truth to it however as legends and stories go I suspect it was blown out of proportions and exaggerated over time but then again who knows during the time of the frontier in the early days of the United States many people created stories to pass the time some people would even argue that it was the golden age of storytelling well for America at least.

Australia has a similar character, though not broadly known. His name is Crooked Mick. Worth looking into. One short story about him is how Crooked Mick got his name. One version tells that when Mick was 12 years old he started having growth spirts, and by 13 he was over 9 feet tall, and still growing. So his dad tried to stop the growth by ring-barking Mick's legs. It didn't work. Since then Mick walks with a bit of a limp.
