I got inspired by The Ancient Songs of the Finnish People (Suomen kansan vanhat runot) collection and picked this beautiful, melancholic text from the South Karelia edition where a big part of my family heritage is rooted. The text has been collected and written in South Karelia dialect which is familiar and dear to me since my childhood.
Through the centuries, people have had both joy and sadness in their lives. As life has been extremely rough in the rural times, one of the only channels to express the emotions has been the collective songs. In many ways our lives have changed radically since that time, but in some ways not that much. We still face hard times and carry some sorrow in our hearts, and it's important to express it and get it healed. This song is made for that process, for soothing, hearing, facing and healing the sorrow.
This SKVR poem collection is older than the 'Kalevala' epic, some more information and links here: en.wikipedia.o...
BLACK HORSE OF WOE (Murheiden Musta Hevonen)
Lyrics: Trad. (Suomen kansan vanhat runot)
Music & Performance: Meiju Enho
LYRICS (Finnish):
Suot sulavat
Maat palavat
Meren rannat raukenevat
Ei sula miun suruni
Eikä muutu murheheni
Tien mie huolista hevosen
Murhehista mustan ruunan
Joka miun huoleni vetäsi
Murheheni veisi
Murhehista mustan ruunan
Tien mie huolista hevosen
LYRICS (English):
Swamps are melting
Earth is burning
Ocean shores are dissolving
My sorrow won’t melt
Nor my woe change
I will make a horse out of my worries
A black gelding out of woe
That could pull my worries
Take my woe away
A black gelding out of woe
I will make a horse out of my worries
