Very interesting evidence it seems that the eternal true enemy of Russia in whatever its form is the West, the first Romanovs had not only imposed serfdom but had belittled Russian history, manipulated and distorted it severly, Russias true history goes back to Scythia/Sarmartia called the Father of Nations by Greek historians such as Herodotus and as Russia being the true Mongolians, the word Mongol goes back to the names Gog and Magog the semi-legendary founders of the nations of the Scythians of whose direct descendants were the Russians, the words Gog and Magog are related to the Russian word "Mog" meaning "Might", Mongol is a derivative of Magogli essentiallt the descendants of Gog and Magog, the Germans at the head of the Catholic church had actually cut the connection of the Russians and the Scythians only in the 19th century before that everyone considered Russians direct descendants of these peoples.

What is your opinion of the epic 1971 film 'Nicholas and Alexandra'? I saw it when it premiered 50 years ago and found it to be an impressive effort which I have watched countless times over the intervening years. Yes, I am aware that there were many historical errors and inconsistancies which were utilized in the name of artistic license, but this is common practice in many motion pictures which deal with true events. In my view, full marks were earned by the entire cast with special mention to Michael Jayston. His performance was superb and deserved an Academy Award. He even bore a striking resemblance to the Tsar! Also, I found the settings and the costumes to be flawless, particularly the military uniforms. In short, I greatly admire this film. This is an interesting video, but I am afraid it either overlooks important details or completely neglects others about the reign of Nicholas II. You fail to mention Rasputin and he is a critical figure in the private and public lives of the Tsar's family. He negatively influenced important decisions and appointments and this ultimately was the Tsar's fault. There are a plethora of primary source documents that show that Nicholas (in his own words) was deeply lacking in self-confidence. He failed to push Stolypin's land reforms, which even Lenin was afraid might be successful. The list of historical evidence and reasons for his ineptitude are quite lengthy and well supported. Even the monarchists and extreme right-wing factions of Nicholas's day were deeply troubled at his poor leadership. None of that makes him a bad man and certainly I agree, to an extent, that darker forces within and without wished to see his downfall, but that does not change the fact that he was "weak-willed" (in his own words written to his wife). Even Peter Gilliard, tutor to Nicholas's son in his book, 13 Years at the Russian Court presents a balanced view of his gentle nature but weak leadership.

Don't exaggerate : he could have avoided his own sad end as well as Russia's had he abstained to involve his country in WWI. He probably repented tearfully but starting that war while he didn't even provide his soldiers with guns against the enemy was an act of absolute cruelty : even Rasputin said don't go. He could have limited his military engagement to professional troops and keep content to send grain to his allies. The bloody Sunday of 1905 is no myth : at least 4 000 were shot or sabred in the city though only about 150 in front of the palace proper, and 15 000 were shot or beheaded in the whole movement of demonstrations throughout the country. That's not all Nicholas II's fault as he didn't mastermind the operation, but please don't deform history.

This video is not just about Nicholas but at a deeper level about a long-standing malaise between east and west which split politically in 395 and religiously in 1053. Materialism, the enlightenment, science and communism did come from the west, and Russia and the east became intoxicated by it. Nicholas at heart may have wanted to return to a time before that happened but he also enjoyed western habits like smoking and tennis so it’s complex. The west too had a more innocent time to look back to and slavery which had been so uncommon in the Middle Ages came back with a vengeance during the time of the renaissance and the discovery. What I found really insightful about the film was the part on World War I and America waiting for the monarchy to be toppled in russia before coming in in the side of the Allies. And a few decades before Germany started to rattle feathers in the 1900s, Russia was considered by the British to be the main adversary. That explains Lloyd Georges statement after Nicholas abdication. When you think of how loyal Nicholas was to his Allie’s launching offensives to relieve German pressure and divert German resources from the west , it shows that here again he was betrayed. I commend the video for shedding light from another interesting perspective.

@@debbieanne7962 yes they should have said in Russia proper as the Pale of Settlement where the pogroms mainly occurred was in Ukraine/Poland and then part of the Russian Empire. The empress Alexandra was more sympathetic to the Jewish plight and wrote to him to improve their conditions before the revolution. .

@Debbie Pretty After the assassination of Alexander II, his son, Alex III (a total anti-semite), put into effect a raft of blatantly ant-jewish laws - this vid repeats the comical canard that they were enacted to "protect" the jews - the result was a mass jewish emigration which didn't end until WWI which made departing Russia impossible. Nicholas did nothing to revoke/repeal these laws, which doubtless resulted in many Jews joining revolutionary organisations.

@@condelevante4 This is absolutely true, gifted comment. Emperor Nicholas II himself never ordered any pogroms, not even Alexander III. Yes! Nicholas II got the pogroms stopped, but should have hit hard on those who caused these damn pogroms. The emperor should have taken better care of his large Jewish population. True, no country in Europe had a particularly loving relationship with its Jewish peoples. The Nordic countries had the best relationship with their Jewish minority. It is also worth mentioning that the pogroms (persecutions) of the Jews became even worse after 1917, most widespread in western Ukraine.

I too was taught that he was incompetent, but the more I read and learn outside of the polish state education programme it turns out he was the next reformer tsar, I remember, Poland had two distinct factions, one pro central powers, one pro entente and pro russian, Warsaw flourished, industry grew, maybe he was put on the throne too early, but this shows the issue in a new light, that he did the best he could with the cards that were dealt to him, ultimately russia fell to bolshevism and cultural destruction, and poland was coup'd by a socialist who was from the pro central powers faction
@jamahariya2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the two factions you are talking about is Endecja, who accepted all the repressions of the Tsarist Regime and on the other side the Pilsudski faction that wanted real independence and wasn't "pro-central power". He refued to give an oath to the German Emperor and was arrested for that. Of course Pilsudski was fighting on the side of Austria agianst Russia and it was the right choice as it turns out. Russia collapsed into civil war and soon the central powers lost too, which gave the opportunity to create an independent state.

Excuse me, but Japan desperately tried to negotiate with Russia to avoid conflict and war. Backdoor negotations, bribery, colonial deals is Asia, Japan tried to offer other ways to avoid a war. But Nicholas insisted, due to his expansionist aims and legacy for his reign. The surprise attack is part of Japan’s strategy, so what? They won. It is not Japan’s fault that Russia was ill-prepared in all levels. Nicholas and his generals even looked down on Japan’s military might thinking it would be a ‘quick win’. In 1916, just before the revolution, literacy was at 56 percent. Think about if World War I never happened, what would the world be like. We must not allow these things to happen again anywhere. Evil comes of itself, when good people do nothing.

At the timestamp 12:50 a lot of rather preposterous inaccuracies are spoken. The independence of the caucasus countries, such as Azerbaijan and Georgia are reduced to the "greed" of foreign powers for the "oil and manganese". Georgia declared independence itself, not any Italians. Ever heard of the Transcaucasian Federation? The West was clearly supporting the White Army over Ukraine and Poland. If the whites stood any chance they would have stood on their side against all the newly independent states. "The west gave its arms to the Poles" they barely did and the few divisions that came were purely Polish Blue Army. Britain refused to support Poland even against the Bolshevik invasion. Also, you claim that Poland invaded and occupied Kiev and Smolensk, that's entirely false. Poland just regained independence and tried to reunite its territories Russia, Prussia and Austria took from it during the partitions. Smolensk was never reached. The last time Poland had Smolensk was in 1610. The Kiev offensive of 1920 was together with the Ukrainian forces of Petlura against the Bolsheviks, not the Whites.

Everything that is mentioned, particularly the role of the allied forces when Czar Nicholas and Russia need them most - is most intriguing... some may be shocked but i'm not. Competition between the super powers is no new thing. I can easily believe your assertions... as sad as this is to say. Russia needed Great Britain & USA yet they failed to come to aid. So sad... however the Romanovs (peace be upon them) are forever immortalised now with this newfound information. We must remember these wrongs, acknowledge the truth and spread it so we can learn from the wrongs of the past and never repeat them again.

The author did brush away some very obvious falsehoods in regards to the Tsar's intellectual capacities and level of education. Nicholas was 100% dedicated to the well- being of Russia despite his lack of Russian genes or blood. Moreover, Russia made great material progress from 1894 to 1914 during the reign of Nicholas II. This fact is completely ignored by many historians. On the negative side, Nicholas was stubborn and often he succumbed to the loudest voice and not to the most reasoned voice. He gave too much authority to some of his senior relatives such as his father's cousin Nikolai Nikolayevich who became his first top military commander in WWI. Nicholas's greatest error was entering WWI. Russia was simply unprepared. It's re-organization of the armed forces would not be complete until 1917. The heavy losses of troops that Russia suffered in WWI in addition to the material costs were the drivers of his forced abdication. I am unaware of any evidence that Russia's western allies wanted Russia to fail. Russia was socially conservative and while Nicholas was a constitutional ruler since 1905 it is unlikely that Russia would have transformed itself into a British style parliamentary democracy for many decades. There were just too many cultural and economic issues to be sorted out before that could happen. Overall, this was a good presentation of facts and encourages the viewer to dig a little deeper into Russian history during the last years of Romanov rule. Russia and the world would have been better off had Russia not entered WWI and kept itself intact. Its neutrality may have forced Britain and France to cool their jets during the crisis following the tragic murder in Sarajevo of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in 1914. The Great Powers were like sleepwalkers following the tragedy of Sarajevo and quite soon found themselves engulfed in a war that dragged on for four years. This war was a watershed event of the early 20th century that set the stage for nearly the rest of century only coming to a conclusion in November 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"“he longs to remain here and have the right to live wherever he pleases in Russia, a right the Jews don’t possess….one sees the bitterness and I grasp it…one ought not to let him become more bitter and feel the cruelty of his old country” That is from an authenticated letter from Alexandra Feodorovna in 1916 writing to her husband about the unfairness of the laws in respect to Jews, especially in this case a Jewish solider. Methinks you judge too freely, but there's certainly no doubt about it, people keep on loving to hate the Tsarina. Not saying though that the Pogroms of 1903-06 were not a problem - they certainly were.

Hi. I just want to say that I've spent the last few days watching and rewatching the videos on this channel. You have done and still do a great job. I always had great respect for the Romanovs. And tsar Nicholas and his family sound like so great people. What the Bolsheviks did to them was indeed a terrible crime. However, I'd like to point some things regarding the facts that were stated here. I am not denying what you said. I just want to clarify things that I've heard. I could of course be wrong and I'd like to know that, if that's the case. For starters, I think that the truth regarding tsar Nicholas and the overall situation lies somewhere in between. Hear me out: yes, Nicholas was not by any means a man of limited intelligence. And yes, he worked for his country to his best ability. However, I didn't see you mentioning the fact that he himself admitted that he wasn't qualified to rule (when his father died, Nicholas said "what is going to happen to me and Russia? I am not ready to be a tsar. I never wanted to become one. I know nothing about the business of ruling. I don't even know how to talk to the ministers."). The fact that he himself mistrusted and dismissed both Sergei Witte and Piotyr Stolypin, despite being two of his most competent and trustworthy ministers (by the time of his assassination, in 1911, Stolypin was an isolated political figure and he'd probably be dismissed same as Witte had been) was also not mentioned. Plus, if Nicholas himself wasn't weak and incompetent and was aware of the incompetence, nepotism and corruption in his administration, why didn't he remove these officials and nobles? Why didn't instead install competent and trustworthy people to help him carry out the reforms Russia so desperately needed? As for the whole situation with Japan: it wasn't like Japan one day decided to simply attack Russia. Russian encroachment to Korea was interpreted as a sign of aggression. And when negotiations were made in attempt to share Manchuria (a Russian northern sector and a Japanese southern sector) and leave Korea to the Japanese sphere of influence, the russian response was dismissive and hostile (in the imperialistic mindset of the time, it was deemed absurd to a European power to negotiate with an Asian one). I'd also like to say a few things regarding the land issue: yes, most of the land was owed by peasants. However most of that percentage was land owed by the community, not by individuals farmers. Not to mention that although the share belonging to the rich gentry was also the share containing most of the good land. That's why Stolypin's policy regarding redistribution of the land was met with hostility by the landowning nobility. But on the other hand, I agree with your opinion regarding how did the west was seeing Russia: they were always intimidated by its size, strength and potential. I strongly believe that without the revolution, eventually the West would try to stop its growth. Overall, while I agree with certain arguments made here and that Western historians do tend to be sometimes a bit too harsh on Nicholas, the fact that as an autocrat, he was theoretically and sometimes practically responsible for several calamities can't change. But as I said earlier, you're doing a great job. And I look forward to more Romanov content in the future. Until then, take care.

@@phanx0m924 that also. Nicholas II was a firm believer of Russification, even though he was more "lenient" than his father, Alexander III and his great-grandfather, Nicholas I. And yes, under his reign, there were pogroms (particularly those who were conducted by the Black Hundrets and the Union of Russian People, authoritarian political parties, funded and supported by Nicholas II). So, while far from the incompetent, blood-thirsty monster the Bolshevisks presented, Nicholas is not the saint ruler who had done everything right and was simply betrayed by those around him...

The thing about Tsar Nicholas II is that he is one of those great what ifs that could have made Russia into a Great Superpower. 1. If he had been more attentive to his people instead of going to the French party after the food gathering disaster that killed over a 1000 Russians. He would have been loved even more. 2. If he had not listened to his asshole cousin Kaiser Wilhelm II and made a good deal with Imperial Japan, then Russia could have total control of modern day Manchuria and maybe even Mongolia by now. 3. If he had just about 25 years of external and internal peace and stability, he could have made Russia even more rich and stronger in all of Europe. Russia only had 9 years of peace after the end of the Russo-Japanese war and even by then, Germany was already scared of Russia. If I could time travel, screw killing Hitler, I would literally try to be in 1895 and try to change the course of History via Tsar Nicholas II and all I ask for is to be married to one of his daughters in 1920.
