Matt, I hade to give up on chasing gobblers several years ago due to health concerns. I just found your site this week and it is a blessing to me. I have never heard any one exposé so many of my beliefs. I believe the problems that so many hunters have are they are not confident or "The Game Is Over" syndrome when a mistake IS made. They don't see each encounter with a gobbler is a new and unique adventure, even when it may be the same one that kicked your butt and rolled you through the cow pies two days ago. Each encounter is a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge on your future hunting. We all fubb up and talk to ourselves after a loosing encounter. But the way to learn the most from that bird is to go over it time after time, go back and review the ground, think about how he would approach your position, the calls you made and what you were trying to say to "The Boss"! On trying to deal with spooked gobblers, remember he just had the crap scared out of him. He is not going to run back in there for a hen, he is scared. I try to move a small distance to him but at an angle if possible. A ridge top works well. Sit down and enjoy what is going on. The woods is alive with new life, feel the wind against your face, be thankful that you are in the woods battling a very hard to fool opponent. IF you are successful the memory will last until your days are over. Another trick I have used when guiding is to find a bird that is running a ridge from one strut zone to another. Slip in behind him and set up either in the empty zone or the path that he used to leave for the other. He as been there and is much more confident that it is safe.

Awesome stuff man, my first bird last year I called it off the neighbors property, which the neighbor was actually sitting in the next field over, calling to the same bird😂 got him to cross a 4 strand barbed wire fence, to within 30 yards of my ole 20 ga

Glad to see you back! Had them cross fence and fly across a pretty good size river. Lots of old hunters here in TN say that all the time. 😂

Dang. That’s a good idea. I’m going to do something similar. Good job. 👍👍

I killed about ever gobbler on the farm in Saline County Missouri but when I first got married there was not one turkey on that farm. But over the years they started moving in to an area that was peaceful and quite with plenty of roost trees. Then in the spring they would separate and mate and going their thing. Then in the fall and winter they would regroup in structures and head back into the safe zone. I would set a pop up tent there on the edge of the field and just stay most the day watching the and even set up a feeder in the winter for all the birds and deer and other animals. One day and I have it on video 25 full bearded gobblers crossed right in front of me. Wow! That was truly a gift from God. The field always had turkeys in it. Along with deer and other wildlife. I had a small John Deer tractor with a small mower on it and late July I would mow many lanes through the brush that had grown up. They were 7-10 feet wide and completely across the field. I had the most fun in that field and hunting around the places where the deer and turkeys would travel in and out. I set up several feeding stations around the 500 acre as places for them to survive the harsh weather in winter. Plus set up cameras to video them. This was as much fun as hunting them. I only fed them through the winter months and early spring. The farm had plenty of crops for them to eat. Mostly corn and soy beans. I have killed several gobblers just as you gave done when most people would have left. I enjoy your turkey talking . Thanks

Never once have I herd that “turkeys won’t cross a fence” as a cattle hand I’ve watched many turkeys in the cow pastures and they come and go through and over the fences A LOT. Certainly not knocking it as an obstacle, animals are just like smart humans and will take the path of least resistance if possible. One thing I’ve herd with it comes to obstacles and weather in hunting is “they live out here everyday” pointing out the fact that the animals know how to deal with the weather, predators, and their environment.

I always heard and believed gobblers won’t cross a fence or a creek that’s what I was taught. So I’m one of those that believed that myth lol. but I always wondered about it. Good to know they will

Love ya buddy but I want to see a spring hunt where you wear no camo. With a turkey called in and harvested! I dont doubt that yrs ago thats hiw they did it but hunting pressure is far greater now than ever back then. I have had birds called to my gun barrel in the fall with no mask and orange on but i believe with the ol wise gobblers its better to have a mask than not. Please do that for me though and just wear brown jacket and blue jeans for a hunt actaully working a bird. I want to see if you do get a gobbler that way in the spring. Love your videos and enjoy that your a good ol turkey hunter!!! Love ya matt! Hey im gonna order your ol sly 2.5 mouth call can you tell me more about it. Type of latex or prophylactic used and cut in top reed? I have your ol sly box call ready to go!!!

I really enjoy watching your videos. I also live in Missouri, unfortunately my area doesn't have a good turkey population. Do you have recommendations on which part of the state is productive for public turkey hunting?

I think every year I have hunted, I have seen turkeys cross a fence. I've only seen one that wouldn't. That was because there was a dominant bird already on my side of the fence. The dominant bird went home with me right after he got in range. Thanks, Matt.

My first turkey went through a fence. I had another one go all the way around this long peninsula of woods- probably 200 yards in distance.

Thought I let you know that I have also killed a ton of turkeys in Missouri. Plus in deer season in Missouri you have to wear hunter orange during rifle season. This time of the year the gobblers are all together. So I sat completely still against a tree as they walked in front of me. I was bright orange and they never spooked one time. I just watched the forever. They were right in front of me. Then they just moved away slowly. Not spooked one bit.

All of these myths I learned as a kid hunting with old timer guys my first year hunting without someone calling and working the birds for me I realize that if I follow them I pretty much have to go home early every morning after they fly down. I stopped following them and just started hunting birds and doing whatever I could and I am actually calling in birds now I haven’t killed one because I am trying to get my friend who has never shot a bird his first but I am calling birds in to killing range regularly

Had one fly across a deep hollow straight at me. In defense I had to move and it spooked..lol.

And i have to say wanting to have a mask doesnt mean your crippling yourself in your mind. Im as tough minded a turkey hunter you will find. Im always prepared for each hunt and have everything in order to hunt each and everyday. Its truly about preference. If i did ever forget or lose my mask i would hunt without it and do pretty much what you do and pull my hat down as far as i can and hope the white and shine of my face even in shade wont spook gobbler.

We have 100 acres long and skinny. Neighbors has 500 acres of prime turkey and deer land. Small creek between us. Only 4 to 10 foot wide. I have had them stop. But I have called many across. Then dropped the hammer. 👍👍

Just watched Myths (2) You talk about face mask. I remember years back before any camo ( early 60's and on ) we killed turkeys wearing our regular hunting clothes, blue jeans, coveralls etc. I've killed several fall turkeys wearing blaze orange combo hunting, squirrels and deer. Just don't move and know when to pull the trigger.

Last note I do know a patch of public land where the birds know EXACTLY where the fence to the killzone is. During deer season the birds are all over the place come April I'll kiss your butt if you can get one to cross the border. No fence in alot of places but no birds on the public land.

What about one you missed not just spooked. Assuming a clean miss, but I figure after a day of leaving him alone I can go back to the same spot and just soft call if need be.

Took a buddy on his first turkey hunt to get him one couple years ago. I always double check my gear and I didn't that morning. We get wayyyy back in there in the hole and no mask. I was pissed to say the least. Get some jakes fired up on fly down. There were a whole herd of them. They putt as soon as they came up the lip on the ridge. And we did that for two hours. I turned around on the side of the tree and them heads would pop up and start putting. Hit the call heads come up...putt. They were just jakes and they picked me off faster than a flea jumps on a coon hound. I took my pillow type seat and cut it and tried to make a mask out of it. It looked that the scarecrow fellar on that batman movie with the Christian Bale. Still putting. By now I'm ready to be jake shooting myself. I'm messing with the mask and I hear all kinds of co motion. A herd of deer was spooked and damn near ran me over. Literally ran almost on top of me and I have my seat on my face trying to get the eye holes right like the movie Django. Basically what I'm trying to say is Turkeys will bust your ass with no mask.
