It’s so hard to choose honestly. They both look great for different reasons. I saw this comment somewhere else, but it seems magic square is replacing MP10 whereas TE is competing with MP44.

Yeah, i'm finding that out. I would love to just say screw it and get MP-44, or try to find an MP-10 that isn't stupidly overpriced. Sadly I think it's going to come down to one of these guys. I think over all I like Transform Element with the only things I wish he had was the bulkier lower legs of the Magic Square and I wish the feet weren't on the side but rather the middle like it should be, the good thing is I could get the second head which is better for Transform Element with the second release. For the Magic Square, one of the few things I wish was that he didn't have the "baseball cap bill" looking thing on his head. I do prefer the colors of the Magic Square though. The Transform Element looks more toyish while the Magic Square looks better. Tough choice, kind of leaning to Transform Element based solely on the facts that I really wish Mp-44 was cheaper so I could pick him up and also because I honestly think this one might be easier to get a hold of. The Magic Element is kind of falling in to the Mp-10 realm where it's either harder to find than I would like, I'm not sure if it's a crappy bootleg instead of the proper figure, or some jerk is charging too much.

@@joeydahl9594 Why not get a Wei Jiang MPP10? It's an excellent figure, and considerably more affordable than getting the official release. Much bigger too and the way they made his lower legs that little bit longer than MP10's eliminates the monkey arm issue the original had. Really good quality figure; probably even better quality than the original. I got two of them on eBay. One to mess around with and the other theoretically for display but he's still languishing in his box😃

I found it very interesting that the kids like the TE version which is more cartoon accurate and the adults like the MS version which I also like because it's a little more stylized. I like these videos. I think you do a pretty good job of being objective and showing where one loses points vs giving it the point because you like it better. I'd like to see a cyclonus vs vid xtransbots vs fanstoys, Bad cube vs takara lambos, unique toys vs zeta toys bruticus. Thanks for the videos

I think it’s also worth noting that while MS-01 has a thigh swivel, the leg articulation is better on TE-01. MS-01 cannot bring the legs 90° forward although, I do prefer the leg ratchets on it. Also, MS-01 has waist articulation due to the hinge system but, I feel it’s only due to being necessary for the transformation and it breaks up the sculpt. I love both, I own copies of both but, I prefer TE over MS. I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with either figure. Pick them both up, if you can.

Cartoon accuracy is questionable in the G1 cartoon. That said, I prefer both cartoon accuracy and playability. That’s what makes me TE-01, but I think we can all agree on this. At least they’re not MP-44.

Its gotta be Magic Square for me. The only gripes I have with the figure are the Matrix chamber and his lower legs. If MS had the Matrix chamber and leg engineering so that the rear of the truck wasnt so damn t h i c c, MS would be my perfect Optimus Prime. Even still, MS still takes the cake. I do love TE's tho, especially the 2nd release with the Season 2 accurate head

Thank you for making it easy to identify the bots throughout the video (labeling and consistently keeping them on the same sides) and not simply calling them by the brand name. It's one of my pet peeves with comparison reviews (specifically thinking of a few of the 3P Omega Supreme comparison videos I saw) where they aren't clearly labeled and the reviewer will simply call them out by name without as much as a point to which one they're referencing. I think the takeaway here is that they're both pretty fantastic and you can't really go wrong, so just pick whichever one you think looks best (or both, which I plan to do, just because).

I prefer the MS too, would literally never buy the TE at any price, but this video made me realize something. If someone is attempting as objective a measure as possible, intent matters. Like on a cooking show or whatever, where no matter how good the steak is, Sorry Sir But We Asked For A Soufle. And the TE is ABSOLUTELY closer to the cartoon. Of course, that's what I don't like about it, but impossible to not credit objectively. And you're right, a screen cap exists for everything, but if we're real, that TE looks like 90% of what you'll see on screen. So if a collector is looking for an improved/replacement MP10, MS is perfect IMO, but if the goal is a cartoon accurate MP collection, TE nailed it. Anyway, great vid, appreciate the hard work.

I had bought the Magic Square first but it wasn't toon enough for me so I decided to buy this one and I have to say I like it much more than Magic Square. You have to see both figures in person to really see how nice the TE version is. TE has better toon proportions and some real nice heft to him. Both are nice but I kept the TE version.

I had the Ms and Te. I have to disagree with Bobby. The TE definitely has the better presence. It’s why both kids and his wife pick it out of the two. TE’s proportions works better in relation to MP36. (Smaller upper body to leg length and width). As far as materials I just keep asking myself if the build was switched meaning if MS had TE’s build would the transformation be a bear? And vice versa. I think if TE used the same plastic all around as MS, its transformation would break the thing in half.

To anyone looking at the TE-01, the MP-44/Movie Head is included with TE-01 OP Leader version 3.0 and the teeth ratchets are spaced closer together. I own two of the TE-01 because I wanted to customize one of them. I also own two Magic Square figures, MS-01X Light of Freedom (Metallic) and MS-02EX Light of Peace. After owning and messing with all of them this is how I would put it. If transforming a figure is important to you get TE-01 OP leader Version 3.0. The plastic is very durable and can stand up to multiple transformations without the plastic feeling fatigued or brittle. The Magic Square plastic just doesn't feel as good when transforming the figures. If you want a more realistic but striking Optimus Price, get MS-01. Like Bobby said he looks beefier. He looks like a strong commander. He is also more articulated than TE-01. If you value articulation overall get MS-02EX. The EX version has the best finish but it isn't paint. The figure has paint embedded into the plastic giving it a painted look without the worry of paint chipping. I, however, do think painted over plastic looks better like Fans Toys does their figures. Paint infused plastic is a good alternative though. The articulation on MS-02 is the best out of the three and I was even able to get MS-02 into a crouching pose. MS-01 can do it but it doesn't look as good because that version of the character should look more imposing. Honestly I enjoy and display all three on different shelves that make each one shine.

Both these figures are awesome in their own ways. If you want the more toon accurate robot mode, the TE is certainly the better choice. I however dig the roided out look of MS because it reminds me of the devastation game. In any case, you cannot go wrong with either because they’re both great representations of optimus prime without the unnecessary bs that jacks up the price for way under $400.

I'm sticking with MP-10 until something scratches all my itches. I'd like to see what Fans Toys can do.

Thanks for the review. I just picked this up on eBay. Although I will keep him in Bot Mode, TE-01 has the best Truck/Cab mode. With Magic Square and MP-10 you see his pelvis in Truck mode which ruins the illusion of being a truck while Transform Element nailed it.

I feel Magic Square wins hands down on this one. Cartoon accuracy is not necessarily a good thing, but those additional details while still being pretty cartoon accurate are preferable to me. I think we can all agree however; both of these look way better than that overpriced Takara piece of garbage that’s on the way, at least based on the pics I’ve seen of MP-44.

It's been almost a year since all this uproar, and I'm finally picking one of these guys up. I know I'll never be able to justify MP-44's price tag, and I've only ever had the Walmart release of MP-01 and a YotH MP-10, so it's always felt like I didn't have a "real" MP Prime. After a lot of deliberation, I'm going with the metallic version of Magic Square's offering. Bobby, your videos covering each of these separately and this "VS" video helped me considerably.

I chose the Magic Square and I love him. I love the way he looks and has a great presence on my shelf. Things about the TE one just look weird to me. The head sculpt and the break in the top of his helmet do not appeal to me. I could nitpick some things here and there on my Magic Square, and some tweaks would make him even better (Some paint tweaks, and I think the plates by his cheeks ought go higher up on his face cheeks, etc) but I'm extremely pleased with him. In any case, both of them make me find the official MP44 unappealing where concerns it's messy, big backpacked, kibble-y, cut-up look (and the visible red plastic in leg gaps etc) and, of course, price!!

Both Primes look great in their own right. I like the TE one slightly more because it feels more like G1 come to life. Zeta is doing a great job but to call the number 1 is misleading to me. They are #1 in the combiner category where you need a entirely unrelated to the toy piece. You can't compare that to a combiner that actually connects the bots to each other to form the bot. Zeta looks okay, but its a display case for 4 bots and a storage bay for the 5th. You can't compare that as equal to say GT Gravity Builder, where its a actual combiner. It's just not the same to me. I would be like comparing a everyday working car to a great looking sports car that has to be pulled by a horse because it doesn't actually work on its own

I love the TE cartoon accurate look, transformation, all red truck, the non yellow coloring on the forearms, the fact that the Matrix has a "door" hiding it and the paint on the pelvic region and thighs. The one thing that I'm iffy about is that he is taller than Megatron. Still for me it's TE for the win! I hope I can get one soon.

I picked up Transform Element. Nothing against Magic Square but it looks too similar to MP-10, which I already have. TE offered pretty much a new experience. Also, since I may have to cancel my MP044 order, I wanted something more show accurate which TE does nearly perfectly. I also got the v2 head which is much better. I am considering the Magic Square mould for Nemesis Prime though. I prefer "mould mates" to look a little different. The beefier Magic Square will help him look more like a Decepticon.

Hello Bobby. I love both but in terms of quality I think TE-01 has more die cast, the plastic is more solid,I prefer the long biceps, the stomach grill is more cartoon accurate, the Cannon lights up. This is the one I’m waiting to buy. But I prefer de magic square head-sculpt, the chrome in the grill and smoke stacks, the transformation is simpler, but the plastic is lighter for me that’s a bummer, the Matte paint is not for me. The beefy looks is more like they go for MP-10 than the actual cartoon. The lack of die-cast is a Nono for me. But magic square joints are better and better articulation not for much but better. But that’s my opinion. Another thing, Takara prices are killing us now, $120 for bumblebee 2.0 and almost $500 for Optimus fells like Takara wants the competition to make K.O. With that amount you can buy a soul of chogokin DX great mazinger or 2 hot toys. I know some people hate k.o’s but Takara is to blame. Later Bobby love your channel peace🤘🏽

Magic Square is a MP-10 with "cartoon" legs. Not too bad, but not perfect. TE-01 OP Leader is the most cartoon accurate and a great compromise to the overpriced and flawed MP-44.

As it's been stated before, especially with Hoodlum, companies add diecast for that heft and the "illusion of quality" because it is heavier. Not saying either piece is good or bad because of it but, in my opinion, companies just add weight to a figure as a marketing gimmick.

I think that TE is way more appealing in the can back area in alt mode (the trailer hitch area). MS is downright goofy in this area (just like MP10). Very good comparison video.

Both appear to be amazing Nope-timus, but I personally lean more towards Transform Element. I like that the truck cab is all red like the cartoon and that the hands match very closely with MP Megatron. Magic Square looks really cool, but he's a tad too chunky for my liking and the axe is too damn small. I still want the MS mold (maybe when/if a Magnus and/or Nemesis repaint comes out), but for me, TE will be my new Prime

I think... I want both. I also think I like the aesthetics of both more than MP-10. And the fact that you can buy both of them and still come in below the upcoming Takara is cool, too. And what the heck is with that mp-44 backpack? It's like all the recent MP's have just given up on every angle but straight-on front. Lazy, Takara. The aesthetics of their Hot Rod were a joke when put next to the Fanstoys Hot Rod. At least the paint and finish are still usually industry leading (ahem, not Shockwave), but dang. Remember the days when nobody else could touch Takara? Adios to those.

This helped me decide which order to get them in ( as opposed to which to get instead of the other)...Magic Square, THEN Transform Element..on a bit of a note, there have been times where Optimus had the gray stripe in truck mode in the animation ( very rare but in at least one episode that was how he rolled)...I do like the no stripe look of TE ...great job as always.

I agree it comes down two categories ,a visual accurate and presence accurate . People were exposed to the cartoon first will lean to what looks like what they see . those who were exposed to the toy first have an emotional attachment because they can hold it and imagine what it could look like in their eyes. In short te has the look, magic has the essence of prime .but in the detail dept I believe mp 10 still holds up .I love the line work and riviots on the arms and chest ,i ripped the covers off the wheels by the legs ,the look better exposed .kinda like what Bobby sez when its re imagined it looks more adult .

You say the secondary hinge on the magic square elbow is meaningless, but combined with the primary hinge (which gives you 90% of bend) when the "meaningless" elbow rotation is in the right direction, the two together give you a full range elbow bend that goes further than the TE version.

Both of these figures are fantastic. I think they both look better than MP44 (I cant stand that hideous backback). I believe both of these are the first MP figures done by both companies. It all comes down to prize. TE is a great figure at a good prize. With MS you get also get a good figure. but way to expensive. So for me, id go with the TE.

TE all day. What killed the MS for me was how the entire waist is blaring out behind the cab in alt mode. No thanks. In robot there are pros and cons with both. Both look great. But that horrible waist skirt showing on ms in alt though...ugh

If the Optimus Prime from Magic Square didn’t have such a chunky truck mode I would choose that one. Pricing aside, I’d just have to choose MP-44. When I have to choose between two competitive third-party MP Transformers and one from Takara-Tomy, the official toy has to be my default choice. Although, I’m not a fan of the total parts explosion and how so much of the torso is a false version of the truck mode. Both of these third-party Primes have so much more sensible transformations than MP-44.

Glad I watched this, I personally prefer the TE-01 by far. And the new ones apparently have the updated head sculpt

Just an oddball question… but do any of the 3rd party add on kits (like the BB7 EP02A Enhancement Upgrade kit for TAKARA MP10 Optimus Prime) work on any of these figures? Stupid question… but you never know. I haven’t seen anyone mention it. I just ask because I can see add on kits being made for these guys later down the road.
