I have a 455 Buick in my Lesabre convertible and like you I completely rebuilt it and put new pistons honed it 30 thousandths like you pistons from Summit and complete Edelbrock aluminum heads intake and carburetor. Even though it's in a 4500 pound car it'll lift the front end and roast the tires.

Gerald Atkinson well I actually decided to go LSX I'm building a 5.3 on the side. I'm in the middle of welding patch panels and getting ready for primer! I'll tell ya what those 455s are not cheap to build like Chevy SB. so I went another direction.

Hey hope your doing well. I read online 1970 and later Buick 350's oil the rockers through the pushrods while the 1967 to 1969 oil through passages in block and heads to the shafts. Can I convert to 70s and up oiling by blocking the hole in the head or block and using 70s and up lifters, pushrods, and rocker assemblies? I have 1968 heads. Would it be necessary to block holes. It's a pretty much a stock street build. Thanks

Nice work. My experience - watch for an oversize lifter. I had a lifter bore stamped 0.010 over from the factory and didn't notice it at the time of build. The SECOND time I built the motor (hint) I caught it and found there are still a few oversize lifters floating around out there.

I was interested in what cam that you went with. Crane Cam made their own version of a Stage 2 cam, with 226 @ .050s with slightly better valve lift. It showed some promise. The Buick Rods are super strong, great choice to used ARP rod bolts...
@brians.harris34878 жыл бұрын
Glad to see a second video. I enjoy watching them. you have some nice components for the Buick, but I just want to mention that you might want to take a second look at your choice of lifters. Buick engines are sensitive to lifters and some out there don't take this into account. I would recommend you look at TA Performance website. if you already haven't, they are the Buick masters and there is a lot of good information on there, not only regarding lifter choice, but a great deal of other things as well. Also, just to mention, you dont need to install hardened valve seats. The stock Buick 455 heads have an unusually high Nickel content, especially compared to other heads, and they dont need it. This is also discussed on TA's website and it should save you some work. Good luck with the 455 (I've been a big Buick 455 fan for almost 40 years in several Boat Tails). I look forward to the rest of the build.
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
Good point I did consider the lifter choice one thing that most people don"t realize is the fact that there are only two major lifter manufacturers in the world they make lifters for pretty much every company that sells them the lifters we used are the same as Comp cams hyd lifters they work pretty well THX

There's something to be said for a well-executed conservative build; a few subtle changes here and there add up to make a smooth, driveable engine with plenty of power when you need it! My father has asked me to build him a GM LQ4 6.0L next year to drop into his '02 Yukon, and while he wants gobs of power, it's taking some time to help him understand why it's an expensive, difficult and impractical way to go with a daily driver. My plan is to lightly touch on a few key areas, put a bit more time into balancing than I normally would, and keep the engine on the factory PCM with custom tuning.

Hello, I have a question about this engine. I had my engine completely overhauled. When putting this motor together, I also used the best gaskets from TA Performence. I've been busy putting the engine together for a long time. The problem I have is that I can't get this engine sealed. After putting it together, I checked the pressure with air. I then checked the seals with a leak detection spray. I noticed that there were small bubbles on the intake gasket and on the head gaskets. I've taken it apart and put it back together several times. I used new gaskets every time. But it won't close. I've asked a lot of people around me and they don't know what to do either. One said it was normal at first. He says that the engine has to be warmed up before it seals. Another says something else. Can you help me?

Thanks for doing the videos. i had a chevy 383 built last year and it is using oil. It doesn't seem to be burning it but it leaks. People are telling me that the rings haven't sealed yet. In your part 3 video you mentioned that the top ring was a Moly ring. Is that the same as a Chrome Moly ring. I am told that the Chrome Moly rings have a hard time sealing and I think that is what is in my engine. Thanks.

I love the Buick 455, i think its one of the cooler V8 engines out there, sure its not as well known as the Chevy 454 or 427 or the Hemi 426, or the Ford 427 but its a cool engine and like what you said what makes it unique was it had the displacement that exceeded the Chevy 454, but was nearly as light as the Chevy 350. I had no idea that the Buck 455 had smaller combustion chambers, learned something new today. Do you know what version of 455 the 1970 Buick GSX had and its details?

i think a minor port job give the valve guides a little massage a back cut down cut 3 angled valve would be good roof of the ports as you say but the bowls under the valve is the most important area i would love to build a 455 sicks they have that glass bottom end but they are torque monsters
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
True the term glass bottom end is something I have heard before I do agree with you on that I probably wouldn't advise raceing with this engine unless you go with major upgrades like the T/A performance stuff this engine will maybe see 1500 miles per year this car is basically a trailer queen

they have theyre place in the racing world but they are rpm lazy and a girdle will help but the buicks make so much more torque then the chevys

Hey Myvintageiron, I have some questions regarding pushing the RPM envelope of an engine. Assuming we have a forged rotating assembly or at least one built that can handle higher rpm, what needs to be done to the valve train? I figure a roller cam would be a good start but should it remain solid roller or would hydraulic roller be better? Also valve springs, beehive valve springs seem to be the new hype. How do they help? And finally, how much spring pressure is enough? Again lets assume forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and hyperutectic or forged pistons and that this application is trying to turn 7,000 RPM. Your thoughts?
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
What engine?? are you talking 455 Buick?
@TopAnimeGuy8 жыл бұрын
Nope, rather something generic. Big block or small block chevy. I have a truck I want to restore and was hoping to push the engine to 6,500. So far my plan is for a small block chevy but things change and I may want to put in a big block. For now though I would like to stick with a small block.

What car is this 455 going into? I have a 300 cu. in. Buick small block I would love to put in a 1984 Toyota 4X4 pickup truck! Where are you located and how much do you charge for a rebuild? I just want a stock engine basically, I want the max torque under 3000 RPM, I don't care about horsepower that much. I want low-end torque for keeping the same speed while going up hills on the highway and if possible, decent fuel economy.
@skylinefever8 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be easier to build a 22RE-T to replace a 20R, 22R, or 22RE? You could upgrade the turbo and related items during the build. Plus you probably wouldn't need a special bell housing for your transmission, custom engine mounts, and a custom exhaust system to fit the Buick engine. Also, I am not sure how much a Buick 300 weighs versus a 22R or even a 22RE-T with upgrades. The other advantage you get with the 22RE-T is EFI. You would have to build a custom EFI system for the Buick if you wanted EFI. In addition, you say you want good MPG, and EFI is better than having a carb engine.
@johnlincicum63908 жыл бұрын
I don't want EFI, and the torque won't be there, especially at a low RPM. That's the whole point of having a Buick 300 cu. in. small block! They're light weight, have gobs of torque stock and 300 HP. They have aluminum heads from the factory and 10.1/10.4:1 CR! The cast iron exhaust manifolds are even shaped like headers.
@Myvintageiron75128 жыл бұрын
this engine is for a skylark honestly if you want decant tq engine I would put a 305 Chevy in it there are a bunch of swap parts for it and in that little truck a 305 would have gobbs of power and get decant mileage the Buick would cost you way more money and wouldnt make any more tq
