I like how you went from the Buick, to an Olds, to a big block Chevy, back to the Olds and finally back to the Buick. That's what I call creative video editing!

Loved this series, learned a ton !!! Especially on the block being light weight. I put a Buick stage 1 455 in alight weight 1976 Nova with a 700R4 Tranny and a IROC 4:11 Posi Rear. The motor got a 500 lift cam, forged pistons, Edelbrock intake, and 800 Edelbrock carb. This will mostly be a street car and occasionally a Friday night drag car. The info on the oil pump was awesomefor the prime as well. Great Job Vintage

Yes indeed you have to pack the pump with vaseline. I've been doing that on buicks for over 35 years, myself. Jeep V8's are the same. one thing that makes it much much easier though, is to pack in the Vaseline before you put the gears in. it's a ton easier and the cavity will be full when you push the gears in and just wipe it flush.

Fantastic and informative video on the Buick build! I finished building a 455 for my 53 Buick 8 months ago but have yet to prime or fire it due to work/life situations. I did the Vaseline in the oil pump method you showed. Do I need to do anything special before firing the motor other than priming it? I was concerned that having sit that long may cause an issue. All the parts were well oiled when I assembled them.
@Myvintageiron75125 жыл бұрын

Did you decide to leave off the valley pan because of the aftermarket intake? I sometimes use the felpro intake gaskets and then trim the valley pan port sections off, so that they don't affect sealing, but they still help shield oil splatter. Thank You for mentioning that lift plates are No Bueno!! Of course so many people will disagree, but taking the chance of distorting an intake even a tiny bit is NOT worth it. Plus, it can't be good for the small threads.

I have run 472 Cadillac engines that I had to do the vasiline trick almost every time I changed the oil and filter. The oil pump is in basically same location as the Buick you are working on.

THANK YOU for showing this build! Im strongly considering this motor for my 71 skylark build and happened upon you're vids. Thank you for being soo detailed, articulate, well spoken and precise. You truly have a gift for this. All those little tips and tricks you showed and explained along the way were great help. Just a couple of questions: If budget wasn't an issue, what cam would YOU have chosen for the build? What carb would you go with? And do you know/recommend if they make a timing GEAR set for this? Would it be better than the timing chain set up?
@Myvintageiron75127 жыл бұрын
I would go with a hyd roller cam setb up it's the best choice I would not use gear drive on the street the 455 needs a 700 to 800 CFM carb

Can't afford an LS right now.. But I saw a couple of things , and I was thinking.. Could I find a decent 4 bolt chev small block and do the LT4 heads bolt right on to these? I would go with the red Edelbrock intake with the dual throttle bodies. And EFI controlled by Megasquirt (Hopefully they have an LT map in their database) I want to go with a (decent) Ebay turbo setup and want between 750 - 1000 hp. what would you recommend? and what might any pitfalls be to watch out for? Thanks, Tom.

Awesome! I wanted to do that Buick 300 cu. in. small block because it wasn't a Chevy! The stock torque is more than enough for the 1984 Toyota 4X4 truck 5 speed manual, but it will bolt right up where a Buick 3.8 V-6 will. I have an original Buick manual bellhousing and flywheel along with an automatic ring gear. I don't need the rebuild to have more torque than stock, but I just would like it to be usable well below 3,000 RPM. I don't need to run above 3,000 rpm on the highway doing 75 mph even.

if im building an engine and adding a new hydraulic F/T camshaft, do I have to change the oil directly after the initial breakin period or is that not necessary? I also have 1 QT of royal purple breakin oil to use as well. thanks.

A fixture was used to push oil through the engine from the relief valve hole. Once completed, the engine was motored for a time using compressed air through the spark plug holes. Before they were started, Buick engines were very ready.
@chrisdonaghy76467 жыл бұрын
The Rover 3.5L ( 215 ci all alloy Buick) primed the oil pump in the same way. I did it after changing the timing chain and changing to a steel cam gear OEM was plastic.

What car is it going into? A wildcat? I can see what you mean about Lightweight Casting! It would be a good street NA motor, but if you tried to put big boost in it in a blown application, I can just see where the rotating assembly would split through the block!, Peace, Tom :)
@thenitroviper61498 жыл бұрын
Buick only made two-bolt main engines (as far as I know) so they aren't good for boost at all. You can put a main bridge on the main bolts to help strengthen that up, but then in some applications, you need a custom oil pan.
@ziggassedup8 жыл бұрын
Notice a very similar engine design between these and a SBC that makes our Holden V8 Tom.?
@shoominati238 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Isn't there a chevrolet part or two that actually bolts to an Aussie plastic ? Funnily enough, I was watching a video with a commodore that had the COME 355 stroker kit in it that was running quite alot of boost and making over 1000hp still on the 2 bolt bottom end (did anyone ever make a 4 bolt 308?).. It smoked a bit on a couple of runs and then blew up just after the starting line. When they took it out and put (what was left of) it on the engine stand later on, it was almost split perfectly enough that you could have pulled the whole rotating assembly out of one side.
@thenitroviper61498 жыл бұрын
yeah, two bolt mains just don't cut it under boost

@timsharpe34987 жыл бұрын
This is never an issue with a Chevy, Pontiac or Olds oil pumps because they actually sit down inside the sump so they never have to lift the oil like a Buick or Cadillac.
@rwbaron62924 жыл бұрын
To avoid using petroleum jelly in the oil pump you can do the following. At first startup remove the distributor and mount a long flat wide blade screw driver shaft in a drill, insert it where the distributor sits and align with the slotted oil pump drive and spin the pump to prime it and distribute oil throughout the engine. You can confirm by the oil pressure gauge if one is installed. This ensures a primed oil pump and having oil throughout the engine on first start. This is how we did it in the early 70's on recommendation from Jim Bell of Kenne-Bell.
@twwtb8 жыл бұрын
200 ft-lb torque, not psi, right. Ok, legit question: How do you prime the oil pump after an oil change?
@brians.harris34878 жыл бұрын
You don't ever have to "re prime" it during an oil chamge. it is only upon a new install or if you remove the oil pump for some reason.
@timsharpe34987 жыл бұрын
I have had Buick and Cadillac V8s lose prime after an oil change. These engines have to lift the oil through a very long pickup tube and any microscopic leak or worn pump gears can cause them to lose prime quite easily.
