I love that you preach that you never have to be anywhere in aviation. That is what I live by. As a flight attendant, I see so many people losing their minds over not being where they're "supposed to be". In aviation, you are exactly where you are supposed to be! Thats the fun part; no pun intended, but fly by the seat of your pants. Also, I was so worried at the beginning that you were going to break your personal limits. You said that this flight was just over your 3 hour rule. And I thought you were eluding to breaking that rule, because it was so close. I am so happy that you didn't. You are very good at sticking to your personal limits and preaching that to others. Live what you teach; lead by example. Thank you, Jason!

Another great video. I learned something new, the procedure tab in FF flight planning and the procedure pick up and the arrival pick up. Way easier than trying to read the arrival plate and transcribe it into my flight plan. Now all I need is a way to go from ForeFlight to my bar in 430w.

This is actually quite helpful in that while the FAA and any given CFI expects a pilot to be able to execute a cross country to standards, the little tips and tricks are often learned along the way. Cross country flights can often be both an intimidating prospect and sometimes a source of accidents. There is often a gap in teaching and content between primary instruction and seasoned IFR and unfortunately that is where a lot of license to learn comes in. Thanks for putting this series together.

Great video as always Jason!! I feel like many videos get posted about flying the actual procedures and sometimes what gets overlooked is the basic set up to the flight. I think it’s assumed that the more technical parts of the flight need to be shown but sometimes it’s nice to see how others set up and simply prepare for a long cross country flight. As a private pilot just starting to work on my instrument rating and planning some longer cross country trips this video nailed it!!! On this flight can you maybe show a bit more about your arrival procedures and dealing with an FBO such as contacting them prior to your arrival and securing parking, etc.

Your three hour rule is sensible and careful and I commend you for it. I fly a Global 7500 and we do long international sectors. The fuel planning is conservative already but I always add 1000 lbs for my wife and another 1000 lbs for my daughter. That is my rule. Approaching the Maldives on a stormy night in the middle of the ocean is no time to wish you had a bit more fuel.

Nice walk-through, and some interesting points to think about. I did a few trips from Plant City to PDK or vicinity in a Cessna 150 and usually planned 2 2-2.5 hour legs, both for fuel and bathroom. Diverted once to Lake City for afternoon thunderstorms, but my favorite stop was Thomasville, GA. Cheap fuel and a great FBO that actively promoted aviation. I didn’t really take services like Uber (wasn’t around then) into consideration. Great point on calling for the location of the self-serve; dropped into Cross City one night after hours and the fuel pump was out of service, and we didn’t have enough to comfortably take off and find another fuel stop, plus reserve. Fortunately there was a number to call for help, and the airport manager drove in and fueled us up.

Great video, Jason. I appreciate the longer format and am looking forward to the next ones in the series. I, also, plan three-hour legs. There's no reason to fly with less than 1.5 hours in the tanks. Also, three hours is about the time when I'm starting to give serious thought to using the restroom and stretching my legs.

Your 3 hour rule is fine for the 172 but may need to be tweaked if you are flying a Cessna 182RG (with 88 gallons of fuel). It flight plans with 6 hours 40 minutes fuel on board. One thing I did was from an FAA circular titled “Time in Your Tanks”. I flight planned a Cessna 210 from Gulfport, MS to Wichita, KS and the fuel was a little tight. I decided that if I was even one minute over Tulsa I would land at Tulsa for fuel. I was 3 minutes early over Tulsa and continued to Wichita. The next day the engine refused to start due to a fuel filter being clogged. If I had stopped in Tulsa I would have been stuck there. However, it is better to be stuck in Tulsa than to land off airport with empty tanks. Great video.

Regarding IFR flight planning from non-towered airport for long x-country - ATC likely does not know your destination unless it is a major airport, therefore they also have no clue what direction the destination lies if the pilot files RNAV direct. In the absence of a filed departure procedure, place a fix in the flight plan within 50 miles of the departure airport (there should be numerous possibilities near the direct route: VORs, intersections, enroute charted waypoints). When you request your IFR clearance, regardless of the method, the controller will have a pretty good idea what direction you wish to proceed, allowing her/him to formulate an appropriate clearance much quicker, saving everyone some valuable time.

Hey Antonio! It's all about preference, they both have great EFB (electronic Flight Bag) apps such as Foreflight (IOS) and Garmin Pilot (both IOS and Android). When it comes to memory it just depends on whether you plan on using the tablet as a personal device and for flying. There can be a lot of downloads associated to keep charts current.

That 3 hour rule is the only way to know you are not running out of fuel. Unless you have a fuel flow indicator (and you know you've set it correctly and it's working properly), there is nothing to tell you how much fuel you have. Having unreasonably large buffer is the only way to ensure you will never run out of fuel, period - unless there's a leak.
