MZTV 1554: What Was Paul Doing in the Synagogues After His Conversion?

We begin this edition of MZTV with a recap of how important it was to Paul’s early career (and his very survival) for Peter to understand that the nations were no longer unclean. Next, we look at the faction within the Jerusalem ecclesia (all believers in Jesus Christ) between Peter and James, the literal brother of our Lord. Peter enthusiastically accepted Paul; James-not so much.
Next, why do we find Paul in the synagogues? Was he teaching the Circumcision evangel there? Giving to the Jews his OWN evangel? The answer to both these questions is: absolutely not. Then what the heck WAS he doing?
I am continually intruged by these early, dramatic days of Paul’s career. We are so far removed from this time we forget that, at first, the Jews struggled to even accept that Jesus of Nazareth, whom many of them had met, was the long-awaited Messiah. This was Step 1. Step 2 was the introduction of a radical new gospel by a man who just weeks before was ravenously persecuting followers of Jesus. Yeah, WE get all of this now, but the men and women of THAT day were coming to grips with all this in real time.
Not even the Kardashians can beat this for drama.

Martin, you need to get this to Rodney Beaulieu. You are uncovering what I have never, heard b4. Your insight is almost "not of this world" I need to watch this 2 or 3 more times, like scripture IT NEEDS TO GO DEEP INSIDE YOUR MIND to truly understand the depth of what you are saying. Wow, oh wow. You make learning along with scriptures the, best thing in my life

Really excellent! The more you learn about the history of the culture of that time, the more alive the context of the scriptures become. We can really visualize, put ourselves in the place of those experiencing those events. Great show Martin ❤

Very insightful teaching these past couple a days, Martin. Brings such clarity to how the events unfolded that provides more substantial evidence to the 2 Gospels doctrine. Thanks so much! 🤗❤️

Love this little miniseries, bro. On a side note, had a discussion with fellow believers about Paul’s demise. We only have Catholic tradition to back up that Paul was beheaded. Can we really trust the Catholics on anything? Methinks not.

I have always wondered that myself. I can't believe that the Romans would have given in to Peters insistence that he be crucified upside down simply because he was unworthy of being crucified the same way Jesus was. Not many Catholic traditions are valid ones.

Martin, here are some more comments by Knoch (taken from his commentary on Acts13) in connection with Paul’s “ministries“. All of this is quite confusing to me in light of you saying today that Paul never preached the circumcision evangel. Knoch- Paul's sermon and course in Pisidian Antioch is doubtless a specimen case. He usually went first of all into the synagogue and preached the evangel of the kingdom to the Jews of the dispersion and to the gentile proselytes who attended the synagogue services. His sermons included all that Peter preached concerning Messiah as the Son of David, yet went further in order to reach the proselytes. The three classes to whom Paul preached should always be distinguished. There were the men of Israel, his brethren, who were under the law and to whom the covenants and promises pertained. But the synagogues amongst the nations were largely attended by proselytes, who are called "fearers of God," "devout," or "reverent," and usually included a company of women. The proselytes, as a class, accepted Paul's message, but the Jews rejected it, with many notable exceptions. Outside of these were the gentiles proper, the idolators who had no leanings toward Judaism. Among these, it was that Paul found the greatest response, but it must be remembered that this account does not lay much stress on this part of his ministry. For instance, it is evident from his epistles that the Thessalonian converts were mostly idolators, yet no hint of this is found in Acts, which speaks only of the Jews and proselytes (17:1-4). Neither are we informed of all that the apostle preached, but only that which concerned the fate of the earthly kingdom. The doctrine contained in his epistles is none of it in Acts, but all is distinct from and above the highest point reached in this treatise. To the Jews, Paul spoke of Christ as proclaimed by John the Baptist, and His life before His death and resurrection and ascension, before he knew Him. Paul's epistles, however, are entirely on resurrection ground. Christ was not seen outside the land of Israel until he was seen by Saul on the Damascus road. Let us never mix the testimony in Acts with the truth in Paul's epistles, but let us rather note the great contrast between them.

This is such a great presentation - like a historical movie playing bfr our eyes...However it has also really caused me to wonder about how Paul worked thru all the things in his mind that he'd learned and taught in error over the yrs??🤔I wonder if he was able to miraculously deal w/ all of that as a result of divine intervention when he was blinded w/ Ananias...I'm sure this ??? seems quite trite, but it comes from my personal experience in learning the Truth of Paul's gospel against the backdrop of many yrs of Christian teachings. So many times ss I listen to you and others, all of a sudden another lie and false teaching will rise up in my thots - and I have to stop and deal w/ it - some times it's such a frustrating process🤦🏻‍♀️I just wonder if Paul dealt w/ the yrs of false teaching as well?? Thanks again Martin for brushing off the iconic gold dust from our heroes of the faith, and making their walk just as real as our own. Much love and grace and peace as you study and bring these treasures to us🙏🏼💜

What was Paul of Tarsus doing at synagogues on Saturday? Giving the Gospel to the Jews first before giving Good News to the Gentiles. He had authority to get up and preach Torah and so he would reveal Jesus. Thus, being thrown out he then gave the Gospel of Good News to Gentiles.

If Paul wasn't heralding the circumcision then what do we make of Galatians 1-23? " He who once was persecuting us is evangelizing the faith which once he ravaged"

Amen! Heralding Messiah Yeshua in the synagogue as Israel’s prophesied coming Deliverer is just a wee bit different than heralding Christ Jesus as having justified all mankind of all nations through all time to life outside of law obedience. That’s so wild Martin...Peter being like “oh crap I gotta split boys…Jame’s troops just showed!”😅…says a TON!

Can I take these questions a step further? It seems while he was writing his most advanced un-circumcision letters (Ephesians, etc) while under arrest in Rome, he was also heralding a different teaching there to the Jews: "...and he welcomed all those going in to him, heralding the kingdom of God, and teaching that which concerns the Lord Jesus Christ..." (Acts 28:30-31). This does not sound like the un-circumcision gospel. And in the previous passages (28: 23-25) this also sounds like what he was teaching in the synagogues years earlier as you reference in this video. Or was it? If not, what was he teaching them in Acts 28? It just seems odd that he would be "prepping" his fellow countrymen to be able to accept the circumcision gospel, while at the same time heralding a much more advanced gospel to the nations. I never thought of it in that way, but it sure would make the puzzle pieces fit together. Maybe you will cover this tomorrow?

@@zendermeister what sayest thou? The last verse of the last chapter of Acts stated that PAUL PREACHED THE CIRCUMCISION GOSPEL (Kingdom of God). 31 He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ-with all boldness and without hindrance!

Catholics of course are into Maryology and her perpetual virginity. Some say all Jesus's siblings were by Joseoh and a previous marriage of his. Others say that just as there is no word for grandson or greatgrandson in Hebrew, just son, so in Hebrew the word brother and, I'm assuming sister, extends to cousins. Just first cousins I don't know. I think Scripture says James's father was not Joseph. Against rabid Catholics, I like to point out the weaknesses of the Rock vis a vis James in arguing against papal infallibility and authority. Great teaching. The private public distinction is very important to our Lord. To be clear, Martin, were there ecclesias of the circumcision and those of the uncircumcision and if so is there a difference between the former and a synagogue? Is a called out group of circumcisionists those who recognized Jesus Christ as their Messiah while members of a synagogue did not? Are not all seven ecclesias, not synagogues?, in Revelation Jewish, of the circumcision? Paul may not ever have heralded the gospel of the circumcision to them yet his desire for their salvation remained. Was Hebrews a form of closet heralding?

Mary did not remain a virgin. She most definitely enjoyed marital bliss with her husband. Matthew 1:24-25 Now, being roused from sleep, Joseph does as the messenger of the Lord bids him. And he accepted his wife, and he knew her not TILL she brought forth a Son, and he calls His name Jesus. The catholics really must not read their bibles. They must be too preoccupied with all their rituals.

Brilliant. Thank you for the ammunition Not that i really care about her virginity. As long as they don't claim she was without sin. But i really dislike them saying she was the mother of God. Very deceptive, like Catholics are prone to be. She's the mother of the SON of God and she's definitely not the mother of the Supreme and Most High. Thanks again. @@rdneonian7680

Wow. That was quick. My third perpetual virginity video and he argued that till can also mean heos in the Greek which has an eternal twinge in its meaning. He likens it to till in Matthew 13:33. So more study required. It reminds me of the saying: the more you know the more you realize how much you don't know, or how much there is to know. Oh, and the same video said brother extends to beyond first cousins. Per Calvin and Luther, who both strongly upheld Mary's perpetual virginity and were highly offended by teachings suggesting otherwise. Just fyi.

Actually he's not convincing. How do you unleavened leavened bread? You don't because you can't. How do you deflower and undeflowered woman? Very easily.
