A North Carolina couple turned to HGTV’s "Love It or List It" when they decided to fix up their home for future foster children. But now they're taking the production company to court. Jungkook that’s how the show works. You can “keep” the home they renovate or put a down payment on another home which is usually stated to be covered by the increased equity in the home, something they make sure to tell you at the end of every show...

Maybe somewhere in the middle or rural or middle America, sure, but most of these shows (especially HGTV) are done in suburbs outside of major metros on the northern pacific, east coast, and to a lesser extent, wealthy suburbs in Canada. There’s not doing home renovations in Oklahoma or Nebraska, usually it’s upstate New York, Seattle, Vancouver, etc. Show me a home there for a large family for under 200K and I’ll buy it just to sell it.

My husband worked on a home in Sanibel Island, FL that was being renovated by HGTV for a show and he said everything is SO SCRIPTED! The hosts of the show literally only show up when it's time to film and they are gone soon after it's done. What you then have is a bunch of subcontractors just working on their own and there's really no one to act as General contractor to oversee the job. I would NEVER hire HGTV to do anything in my home.

I've had multiple remodeling project done by local contractors over the years. The only one I ever had issues with was a drunken brick layer I hired to build a chimney. The chimney has stood for 45 years, crooked and bent as the day(s) it was built. This guy had me buy all the materials (doubt he could front the money) and took all the extra blocks and the truck load of sand - that was intended for my kids to play in.

Their defense is so good. "We've done more than 250 renovations without any issues." Okay. There's evidence everywhere, but you claim you never did it before, so that means you didn't do it this time either. Imagine getting mugged at gunpoint by someone walking past you on the street, recording the whole thing, and then when the mugger gets caught they say "Obviously I didn't do it, since I previously walked past more than 250 people without any issues."

Their house gets fixed up, while the guy looks for a new home for them. The owners decide to sell their renovated house and buy the new property or stay in their renovated house. Their renovated property goes up in value and if sold, the money might cover the cost of the new property. At least that's the premise. The owners will have to pay off their current mortgage plus the loan to fix up said property. They'll still be in eternal debt. How is this show successful? How do the producers manage to perpetuate this scam? It's a better question...

I was always under the impression that the show either pays a portion of the renovation cost, or offers a large discount on the renovation work. This would save the homeowners several thousand dollars, and if they sell, would net them even more on the sale of their old house.

Got tired of young, first time buyers lamenting on HAVING to have hardwood flooring, granite countertops, SS appliances, 3/4 bedrooms, playroom, finished basement, luxury master bath and so on! Heck, I'm 64 and still haven't got all those things in my 3rd home, much less my first starter home as a newly wed!! How expectations in young people have changed!

I got to interview Shari from Room by Room (she’s awesome) and she talked about how they built everything themselves so they could actually teach the viewer how to do it, that’s a crazy amount of work for two people! She basically started HGTV, it’s not the same now for sure.

Fixer Upper spends plenty - with your house costing $125,000 and your all in budget $300,000, leaves us $175,000 to do the what we just described to you in the house. So says Chip Gaines. Fixer Upper uses their own crews and all their project are in the same general area in (Waco) Texas. I'm sure they get a lot of good deals for materials from businesses they work with on a regular basis. And everything I've read about Chip & Joanna is that they're extremely honest and humble; although it's TV so who knows.

Ill never forget this one. My wife was hooked on these shows. She was watching a bearing wall tear out to inlarge a room. They installed a glue lamb beam to carry the load of the wall upstairs. All glue lamb beams are stamped (TOP) to establish camber or crown. And sure enough when the camara shot looked up at the beam there was the stamp on the bottem of the beam. This was on national television. So they created a sag in the bearing wall above. Remarkable.

Extreme Makeover never scammed anyone... they build things for free the owners pay nothing, their problems were they were genuinely unrealistic about the way they would build the houses WAY too big and expensive which lead to much higher Bills and the owners being unable to afford it, sometimes though they mistakenly hired very bad contractors and then ran out on them half way into the build which sadly has also happened 1 or 2 times in the new episodes and they were genuinely heart broken and i was for them too cos they really do a splendid job, they just can't always know who are bad contractors but a lot of them are these days, back in the early - middle 2000s sometimes they just didn't do the Tiles or Painting correctly and then left early... so by the time anyone realized it they couldn't fix it on time, because the houses were SO big too they really couldn't muster up the time or budget to fix it. It's all free though and their budget comes from whoever gives them their Funding and they raise money on the side for a few other things they give them or help pay off, they were a bit naughty by making it seem they paid off their entire mortgage but then cos it's a new house they have to start paying off an entirely new mortgage which is nobody's fault how mortgages were always a huge scam and we shouldn't have to pay for a whole new mortgage for a house built on the same land... Extreme Makeover is now back but it's a lot better now though and they don't bulldoze the house if they don't have to even keeping original woodwork and if they make it bigger they only do a little bit and still keep it within the size other middle class homes would be and they try to fit in more kids in the same room, so i'm happy with how they've improved :) if a contractor bails on them then cos the houses are standard size they'll be able to fix it. A lot of these these other renovation shows though they were definitely running scams but Extreme Makeover or Trade Spaces and those similar never were it was free renovations and the owners genuinely won it, a lot of them can't even afford to pay to have their house done up. Here in The UK some building companies run projects by raising money to completely renovate someone's home inspired by Extreme Makeover so it's possible for it to be free for the owners.

It would seem the home owners would get a fee for featuring their home on the show. I understand the homeowners would pay for renovations but I do not think the production company should get a fee. They should get payment from the companies that advertise during the airing of the show.

August 2020 Update: They ultimately settled out of court, while the homeowners were able to sell the property for $570,000 in April 2017 after they only paid $335,000 in 2007. Nice little return on their investment, eh? The bad news is that the new owners then sold it for $500,000 in Dec 2017, while the new Owners after them only paid $479,000 in 2018. Phew.

The point is that is ASSUMED that they will have the best of the best and that the renovations are done super quickly, like the other HGTV shows. I think it's around a month whereas normally a project like that would take several months. They also imply, imply being the key word, so idk if it's true, that the realtor on the show, David helps you buy the home. Exactly! I thought the same thing. The reason this show is so expensive is because the production company pockets a big part of the renovation budget. In this case the production company got 55k of the 140k budget. That explains why it's so expensive on this show. Chip and Joanna Gaines could do better work for half the money. What I want to know is what happened to the DIY HGTV craft type shows. Make a quilt, a rug, jewelry, stained glass, sewing clothing or home accessories, building a fire pit, a kid's gym set and landscaping. Where are the DIY shows that stop to tell you how to hang a door, install kitchen cabinets or a shower pan. All of these were shows that could spark interest in a new hobby or give you an idea if the contractor you hired new what he was doing. These shows would be much more useful. I don't need hours of House Beautiful results, I can get that plenty of other places.

Some of the old decorating shows did end up with some pretty horrific results. Even the newer home reno shows produce that. That John from the Cousins show seems to have fairly unrealistic ideas about how people function in a 'real' home & 'normal' tastes - everything doesn't need to end up looking like the latest in some 'designer trend'. (Trends are simply a way to part fools with their money, because they invariably end up being declared 'dated' by the same designers within a few yrs - half a dozen yrs ago everyone was tossing out or spray painting over anything made of brass, but suddenly now brass is a 'hot home decor trend' again.) That black house with the corrugated steel dormer and the silly wooden carport on which John insisted was one example - no wonder they had the homeowners do a nighttime reveal! Made the house look hugely 'contemporary' when the wife kept saying her style was more traditional. Also can't stand that one show where all the houses look alike due to the woman's constant use of her beloved 'shiplap' & her own more rustic style, regardless of what the homeowners say (& they are paying for the renovations on that show, too). If you notice, on every single HGTV show, the homeowners gush about how much they 'love' it. ALL of them? There has to be people who look at what's been done to their house & thinks OMG they've wrecked my house, & I paid them to do it! I'd bet a high percentage are down at the paint store the next day because they want to get rid of terrible color choices and hideous accent walls, or calling a contractor to put back walls these guys always rip out for their boring open floor plan concepts (& why do they do that when the homeowners keep repeating they have traditional style? traditional style means room definition!), or trying to return the cheap Ikea & Home Goods furnishings & accents to get money toward replacing them with things that will actually last more than a few yrs. There was a Cousins show where they were backpedaling after ripping out 2 walls to add pocket doors and half-walls with columns and a coffered dining room ceiling after finally remembering the people had traditional style sense. They all want to do the trendy stuff to the houses with which they play. Just once I'd like to see a reno that didn't involve tearing out walls, grey tiles, faux wood floors, ugly 'custom' light fixtures, brass accents, etc, ad nauseum.

As a carpenter my dream is to get hired by one of these home improvement shows. My wife watches them and I cant believe the prices they claim things are costing them...she was watching fixer upper the other day and a house needed new handrail on the front porch, about 12 ft total. The cost was bid at $6,000 to build a new rail, out of treated lumber( to those who don't know, the actual material cost couldn't have been more than $300, and a knowledgeable builder would have it done in a few hours.) Imagine of you could go to work and make $2,000/hour, I told her if I could get as much as they get for their remodel jobs, I could retire after just a couple jobs. Either the costs of these jobs is exaggerated or they are inflated because it's for show. I could build whole new houses for what it is costing these people to remodel their living rooms.

I had a buddy who was a licensed General Contractor and also an insurance agent that specialized in completion bonds. He said the reason these shows could complete remodeling your home in 23 minutes is that they do shoddy work and don't get any permits or used licensed workers. It looks good on camera but upon further inspection the work is not complete. Paint and plaster take a certain amount of time to dry and set up. Unless you are painting a fresco, you can't paint on wet plaster.

Lord. Does no one remember This Old House on PBS and Bob Villa?! They'd go in, quote how much the owner would have to put in and then the show would start. What began to happen, was good ol' Bob would tell the owners in the middle of it all, "Well, if you want it done right it's going to cost another $50-200 thousand more than the original estimate." Problem was, Bob began to do it to almost every owner on the show. You'd see these people, some going into serious debt fixing the house AT the price quoted, get punched in the gut while their house was in shambles and no way out but to go deeper in debt to get it done. Bob, was finally fired. The point is, you want your house fixed or work done, DON'T ask a television show. You want to be able to hold your contractors not only to their bid but oversee their work. Be able to check their standing with the BBB, any law suits etc. A reality tv show takes all of that away and has absolutely no concern if it's done right or not. This Old House was the only home fix show I ever watched. Then stopped as couple after couple would get that gut punch. I'd feel bad for them. (Both the show and Bob was sued by more than one home owner.) But hey, some people live to get screwed over. If you are one of those, call a reality tv show.

You cannot always tell what is happening in areas you cannot see. You used the word "Quote" in your opening statement. Contractors cannot see what is going on in the walls without opening them up. I did a bathroom remodel several years ago and when the contractor opened up the wall there was severe termite damage. How could he or I know that. It ended up costing an extra $5,000 in materials and labor to rebuild the wall and re-install the plumbing pipes. Was your house built correctly in the first place? You cannot see drain pipe until you dig it up. I agree there are shoddy contractors out there.

When referencing the old program with 'This Old House', we're talking about owners that weren't naive about what it would take or happen to get their homes remodeled or fixed. One was in a middle of over a hundred thousand restoration, house jacked up to redo the foundation, and Bob came up with over seventy five thousand dollars more to "get the house restored right means it can't be done with cheap materials."?!?! This included improvements Bob thought the house should have from the original build that weren't included. And he did that more than once. (Bob became a bit of an ass when he began to get popular.) Anyone that has enough money to spend too fix their home, regardless of what it is, should be realistic and NOT just trust a reality television show to be above board. After all, when the works done they move on. Owners are left with the consequences.

I also wonder about the "open concept" that everyone always wants in these shows,so they can see their kids from the kitchen..Or so they can be with their guests while they cook..I grew up seeing my mom having everything ready when the guests arrived,never was she more than a few minutes in the kitchen after the guests had arrived. And she was so happy to have a door to close IF she needed to go to the kitchen to get something,she didn't want the guests to see the dirty dishes in the sink and whatever mess there was. I have continued the same way,kitchen is my hideaway,I love to be there even when I'm not making food,away from the tv-room and noice. From what I can tell, "open concept" is a term that unscrupulous renovators and contractors use to persuade people who've always lived in tiny apartments to keep the same kitchen/living room concept in their house and to talk down about how stupid people are who built their houses with separate rooms for the kitchen and living room (what were they thinking). I hate open concept because I grew up in an open concept home long before it was fashionable and there was no privacy and the whole house always smelled like whatever it was my mom was cooking or burning. We looked at an HGTV house in Austin. My Engineer son showed us all of the shortcuts the builders took with the house. It was flashily but just junk.

shadrach that's all them cookie cutter houses built on spec some are better than others but most are built as cheap as possible if you want a well constructed you have to hire a reputable custom home builder with no less than 20-25 years experience or build it yourself/be your own general contractor but that's a gamble if you don't work in the trades go with the home builder

This makes sense, as a carpenter I look at some of these remodels and wonder where did the money go. I was wondering if Hillary was over charging for interior design services, because I didn't see the amount of money they put up in the construction.

I used to love this show but always wandered why the lady host was always saying how like “$140,000 is no where near enough for what you want! I’ll need more!” When that should be plenty for a huge renovation + addons. I always thought it was due to location, but now I see it’s probably because of all the cost for production 🤔

@ShookSaltShaker they did not even use the whole 140k. they say in the video the contractors used 85k and the production crew pocketed the rest. which sounds like theft to me because this couple were paying for the renovation...

Sadly this is what happens if you aren't careful, this happened in a minor way while Extreme Makeover was on in the early - middle 2000s and some people found they didn't do things properly especially where it concerned the Tiling which weren't fixed on properly and some rooms weren't painted properly, they also made it seem like they wouldn't have to start paying an entirely new mortgage and that it was all paid off but cos it was a new house they had to start all over again paying on a completely new Mortgage and didn't tell them how it would significantly up the costs of the Bills, and because of inflation it started to become difficult to own your own home, when 2008 hit i doubt many of them could afford their house any longer even if they still could back then. Extreme Makeover is back but they're doing things right this time around by only bulldozing a house if it's unrepairable and only adding a few more rooms or keeping it the same size and renovating it to open it up and giving it a new room, windows and walls with a makeover on the inside, they're being a lot more realistic about it now which is good, they wouldn't make the owners take out a loan either. So if any TV Company makes you take out a Loan they're clearly running a scam.

im disappointed, these shows used to be my inspirations as a child to become a civil engineer and focus on residential construction. at least i won't make the same mistake they've done

Having watched this train wreck of a show, It is cringe worthly, I would NEVER trust the woman who acts as the Project Manager. What i've seen is a gross ineptitude and lack of any understanding of building and remodeling. She is clueless. I hope this couple wins the lawsuit and HGTV drops the show.

That show is NOT a train wreck. Hillary is a very intelligent and competent project manager with superb taste who always produces magnificent results. That couple who sued is probably a couple of kooks who expected far more than they got but were unwilling to pay for it.

Having been a PM in the construction industry the woman is NO PM. She is a designer. She is clueless about building anything including time requirements, material, and costs. the woman and the show is absolutely the most annoying thing on HGTV. Every show where she "acts as PM" always has cost over runs because she is clueless, in the industry if you don't estimate correctly and do not have contingencies budgeted, you lose your job. Job 1 in a whole house remodel is a thorough inspection and estimate of work, prior to bidding on the job. She wings it and it bites her and the client in the ass every time.

*Willy MacTavish* Wait a minute here, big boy. You seem to be a chauvinist who is threatened by a woman who works in the same industry as big macho YOU. She doesn't have to be skilled in all aspects of remodeling because she employs competent trusted tradesmen who are, as any good manager does. She is certainly NOT clueless. She is always keenly aware of time constraints, material and costs. Cost overruns occur because of unexpected problems or last minute changes on the part of the homeowners, not because of any fault of Hillary's. You must not have watched the show very often because she ALWAYS brings a trusted contractor with her to inspect the house, the work to be done, and an estimate of the costs. She does NOT wing it.

The home remodel shows are always over the top . They never do anything with a modest budget in mind. I remember on one remodel with a budget of over $200,000 ,they were saying a small freestanding wine fridge was not in the budget. On another house they couldn’t fix two small bathrooms that had outdated fixtures and a shower that leaked. They had used all the money in the kitchen and living room .

hamsterama i was thinking the same. i mean come on people,its like all the shows on that channel want them to all look alike. all the buyers seem the same too....want everything under budget, "champagne taste on a beer budget", complain about everything, & the hosts are always douches. its tv, people, what did u expect?? +Daners 424 The logical thing is to fix and replace what's worn out, but keep what's still functional. My house (well, it's not really a house, it's a duplex where I live in one side and rent out the other unit) had to be partially remodeled because some things were old, worn out, or not original. It was built in the 1950's. I saved money by keeping the 1950's look. I kept the knotty pine kitchen cabinets, because they were original and in great shape. The laminate countertop was in poor shape and not original, so I had my contractor install a laminate countertop with a linen print, which was popular in the 1950's and is still available today. Now I've got a nice, functional retro kitchen that was done at affordable price, rather than tearing out the vintage cabinets and putting in blah new cabinets with blah new trendy granite countertops. The bathroom was in terrible shape and nothing was salvageable, so I had it remodeled in 1950's style, so as to integrate it with the retro kitchen. I get tons of compliments from people who visit my duplex. And it was affordable to remodel, too, because I kept original features where possible. Anyway, the point of this story is that it's so stupid to get into debt because someone wants their house to resemble some overpriced houses they see on TV. It makes more sense to remodel a house around its original features. Or, don't remodel at all, if it looks good and is in good condition.

+Gabby Flores Those 1950's tract homes are everywhere. Hey, maybe one day you can buy one for yourself! They were so well made. My place is made of concrete block with stucco on the exterior. Even if there's a severe storm, you don't hear anything creak, because it's so solidly built. And my place is really unique. It's a duplex, with each side being 1,140 sq ft, and 3 bed/1 bath. Each side is the same size and layout of a typical 1950's ranch. It's like two L-shaped ranch houses stuck together to resemble a U-shaped ranch house. I bought it from Mr. and Mrs. Slumlord, who were selling it because they were divorcing. They put no care into it, letting it deteriorate. That's why I needed to have both sides partially remodeled. It's quite surprising that Mr. And Mrs. Slumlord put no money into it, given that it's located in an upper middle class suburb. Luckily I came along, since I appreciate 1950's houses, and gave it plenty of love. And the rent from the other side helps me pay my mortgage, too!

I agree. My 117 year old Colonial has most of its original woodwork. I'm keeping it that way. Heck that's why I bought it in the first place.
