Hi Stephen. Happy birthday to you. Removing bodyshells: Try using cocktail sticks to keep the bodyshell away from the clips on the chassis while you remove the bodyshell. Losing small pieces: Put a towel or microfibre cloth underneath the model. Any piece wanting to fly away will (usually) be caught by the towel/cloth. If the pieces (screws?) are made of iron/steel, you can buy a magnetic dish to keep them safe while working on the model. Oh, dear! You probably didn't do anything wrong. Adjustment of a CV or two? Or, as you said, maybe a bad decoder. Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you! The cocktail sticks are a great idea!! The towel too. Through the help of you viewers, I learned that I made a mistake by programming the 3 digit label…..I am blanking on the proper terminology here. I should have done the 4 digit one but now I know. New lesson learned. It is all worked out now though, minus the speed control. Engine does not move until speed step 11.

Short addresses can be 1-127 from what I know. I pretty much only use long addresses because it can be 1-9999 and it doesn't make a difference in programming or running for the most part. Set the short address back to 3 and activate the long address instead. Also glad you put the extra foam in the back since I ended up randomly having connection issues after mine worked fine for a year. Edit: also I have mine with CV29 set to 55 for reverse and analog control. I don't remember having to change anything else for the lights, but those can be changed with CV 57 and 58 setting one of them to 1 and the other to 2 will change which light is on in each direction. I recommend downloading the tsunami diesel users guide as most of the basic CVs are the same for digitrax, but digitrax has their own guide which has differences for some lighting effects.

I would agree with always using long addresses when using DCC. I always cringe when it is said you can run a DCC-chipped loco with an analogue controller - I would do it.
@danagibbs32655 ай бұрын
@@PaulSmith-pl7fo I only ever used mine on DC when I was first testing curves in my track before I had all of the wiring done. Digitrax decoders are always DC compatible as long as CV29 is set for analog.

I learned something new with this install as I was not aware of the difference with short and long addresses. I thought it was as simple as if the loco number was 3 digits, you do short…..I was wrong. But most times, we learn from our mistakes which can be the best way to learn. As long is it does not cost a pile of cash or someone gets hurts. So far the foam is doing its job. We shall see what happens over the next year running it. I tested this out on my DC layout first while it was still DC so no worries there. I never put a DCC engine on my DC track. I do not care to learn that lesson out. Too costly. lol. Thank you for the info!!

Short address can't be set to a number higher than 127. Do a factory reset on the decoder. Then use loco address 3 in your NCE throttle (all decoders are factory set to 3). See if you can run the engine in both directions and control the headlight. If it responds and works, then change the address to long address 501 and test again. Hopefully it will work for you.

This is what I ended up doing. I learned something new but now I know. Works great now though.

I’m glad you had some good listeners who paid attention and know their dcc programming. I never caught the error. By the way, before install, you might consider testing outside the loco first. That way you know you had a good, working decoder prior to install. You can buy or build a tester. I bought an ESU brand, but others exist.

Yeah I got lucky there. It may have been a while before I caught that one. That is not a bad idea. I will have to look into that. Most of my installs have been easy enough that the work could be done over again. The Kato P42 I think it was that I soldiered it in though, is another story.

The problem is the short address. As mentioned a short address is limited to 1-127. It doesn’t have anything to do with the number of digits. A short address is 7 bits long. The eighth bit is for direction. So the maximum decimal value for a 7 bit set all to 1’s is 127. Use a long address. It takes two bytes to store the value and you set the CV29 I think to say use long address. This tells the decoder to use CV17 and CV18 for its address.

Thank you for the information. This is something I was not aware of but know more about it now.

Yeah I am glad I was able to solve the problem. I was pretty disappointed when it did not work the first time.

Did ya start the programming by using loco # 3? I rewound and could not tell. Did it respond to loco 3 before you changed the address to 051? Jusy wondering if it operated on 3 first
@Silverstatetrains5 ай бұрын
I did not. I figured it out though as I did not know at the time that the short address only goes to 127. Engine works good know minus the speed mapping.
@ronhart41665 ай бұрын
Reinstall and use short address 3 and see if it works. I believe you used too high of a short address number.
@Silverstatetrains5 ай бұрын
You are correct. That was my issue. It works good now minus speed/acceleration.
