Time to get an F7 or some other diesel for your passenger trains. I did the Nebraska Zephyr for my railroad!

Just finished assembling a pile of MT 1015 couplers,found quite a few Atlas C40-8's that I apparently neglected to swap couplers

That is always fun. I can only imagine how hard it would be to work on such tiny couplers. I have installed them before but never have built them before. What road names are to C40-8s in.

For your issue with your Athearn engine stalling at the peak of the 4% grade, have you checked if the fuel tank rubs the track at the transition joint? I had this issue with an Atlas GP40-2W engine. The fuel tank was slightly too low and it rubbed just enough to lift the body and lose the contact between the trucks and the body, making me lose power. Probably not your issue, but worth checking!

I can check that out. I know I need to smooth out the transition there. My main problem is the coupler keep letting go. I will throw some attention to the spot here soon. I may add a 2% grade in front of it to help it out.
