I’ve been watching for a few weeks now and I need to find an overview of your layout. I’m really interested in seeing your finished product. Currently I’m working on a 6’x11’ 36” Lshaped n scale layout. I have the bench work done but now I need a solid layout design. I’m thinking 3 lines ( 2 outer loops and 1 figure 8 ). I’m not too interested in switching yards. Maybe a few passing lines , because I just want to run trains. Any suggestions?

You ought to give some thought to getting yourself a hot foam cutting tool. They're dort cheap and no need to continuously replace blades! If you can't find a cheap one at your local hobby/craft store, TEMU has them for next to nothin'!

Sir I'm sorry to bother you, but in one of my comments to you. You mentioned that all I have to do is to go to your description page and place my copy of my layout with your email address so you could help me. Then I said in your page there's two emails so which one should I go ahead with. One is buymeacupofcoffee or the other one is youtube/silverstatetrain. So which one should I use and send you the copy of my layout Sincerely Allan
Sir, When I start installing the feeder lines, Do you think I should go every 4' or every 6' of feeders for every bus line? Also in a completely finished layout how many bus lines should there be. As you can see I have absolutely no idea what I'm trying to ask here. I guess what I'm trying to ask is Do You Think You Can Help Me? Sorry for the Inconvenience I'm causing.
@Silverstatetrains14 күн бұрын
It really depends on the layout but either 4 or 6 feet would work. Could split the difference and do 5. You only need one bus line but it can branch off in different directions. For example, I only have one under my layout but when I expanded it, I added a branch under the new section. Feel free to send me an email with your layout. I would be happy to help. The biggest thing you need to figure out is what you are capable of taking on. For example, if you want easy, do a simple flat layout using kato unitrack. Can make it as big as you want but keep it flat so it is easier to work with. You do not even need to glue it down. Adding multiple levels or elevation makes it more complex which will lead to trouble shooting. I am not sure what size you are looking at. Could always grab hollow core doors and make that your layout. Would be easy to work with and the bench work not to complex. First thing first……you have to start somewhere. Please reach out using my email in the descriptions of the videos. I will help you out the best I can.

I’m no expert on locos, but I don’t think sd40-2’s were equipped to handle passenger cars. Of course, there’s always the possibility it could be consisted with a passenger loco that had equipment for heating passenger cars (steam generators) and split water and fuel tanks, but I don’t think it would pull passenger cars alone. Great Northern had some SDP40’s that came over in the merger, but not sure what numbers that they took on other than the 6327. So far, every photo I’ve found of BN SD40-2’s are on freight duty.

I personally love the looks of the SD40-2, the only one I don't like is the snoot version where they extended the nose to have less walkway. CP has a bunch of the snoot version. I also love the BN version simply because the paint scheme is gorgeous. Also, I have no clue if they ever pulled passenger service, but who cares, if you like it I'd say do it!
@Silverstatetrains10 күн бұрын
I think I have seen those on line and I would agree. Not a fan of the longer front end. Yeah I will need to figure out what I want to use these engines for. Having Kato couplers, it just makes sense to use them with Kato passenger cars OR Kato freight cars as I have not had good luck swapping out Kato couplers with MT ones. I seem to be having issues with those on my layout.
@KevinsTinyTrains10 күн бұрын
@@Silverstatetrains that makes total sense. I also have been having very different luck with the Kato couplers on my engines. I have 2 that work almost flawlessly with Micro trains coupler, and 2 that just won't cooperate. Regardless, enjoy pulling both passenger and freight around with them and have fun!

What is the price difference between the two locomotives, one with DCC & the other without DCC? Also, what is the price for the converter kit to install the DC Locomotive? Lastly, is it worth the frustration of doing all of that just to save a couple of $$?
@Silverstatetrains26 күн бұрын
It depends on the engine and where you buy them. For example, I can get a Kato SD70M DCC ready for about $89.99 while DCC equipped, is $149.99. The average decoder is $29-$40 depending on what you need. There is a savings for sure so it is worth doing it yourself if you feel confident. Eventually the engine will need maintenance so learning prior is not a bad idea.

There it goes again my tremors the word I was finishing the sentence with was particular. Is there any way I can send you a photo of what my layout would look like. I think I will stop here before I have anymore tremors.

No worries. Feel free to email me your track plan. I can show you what I would do for feeder if that helps. My email address is in the descriptions section of all my videos. If you are using Kato track I can help. Other track. It so much as I have never used it before.
@allanmartinez119026 күн бұрын
I'm sorry for the mistake at the end of the comment. I was experiencing tremors in my hands, and I couldn't finish my statement. As I was saying, I'm having a hard time understanding what the bus line and the feeder lines do. My layout, if I ever get it, started the layout has several levels throughout the table. What I'm trying to find out is How many lines are in a layout? I only know of 2 lines and they are The Mainline and The Branchline. Are there any other Lines besides the two I mentioned? The second part of the question içs What is the proper number of feeders to be used in a layout? Example I have a line which will be making a slow climb about a 2-3% incline. How many feeders could I use for this particulaĥhhgnfnnvr line?
@Silverstatetrains24 күн бұрын
If I am understanding correctly, you will want a bus line running under each level of track. This can be one continuous run of wire spanning under it all or you can run it in pieces using blocks that feed each other. For feeders. You want one just before and after isolated switches, if using kato track for example. From there, one every 3-5 feet. You can do more if you want. No real wrong way. If your trains slow down or stop all together, you need more feeders or missed you missed a track sections. Hope this helps.
@allanmartinez119026 күн бұрын
Hello Sir, I'm starting to get really confused about trying to understand this hobby. To start off with, you're not the problem!!! I'm sure everybody who has seen your videos would agree with me the problem is with me. I'm sure what you're talking about is easy for the majority of your followers, but for someone like me maybe I'm not the model railroad hobby type of person to do this type of thing. The reason I'm saying this is because I don't understand the concept of the bus line and the feeder lines. I have a lot of wasted model railroad magazines and books about starting a layout and the basic books about wiring and it's telling me basically the same information. To top it off to add Insults to Injuries I'm a member of a model railroad club and you would think this is where I could finally get all my questions answered by the very people who actually have Layouts in this club and if they don't most likely it's because either they are in the middle of building there own layout or they don't have the space in their home or apartment. Either way they still have the knowledge in their own field or everything about how to build and run there own layout. So I approached some of the members and I started asking them for some advice. Well my worst fears in my life appeared, after asking a few members some basic questions and "I Did Not See This Coming" Either they were Stupid or they just didn't want to be bothered with stupid questions. I guess my number one factor overall would be wiring my layout. I just don't understand the concept of the use of the bus line as ǰ😊Ctrl

Swap the wheels in the truck of that gondola. Reverse them L/R and front to back. The lead set of wheels may be out of gauge. If the engine has body mounted couplers there may not be enough L/R movement in the coupler box and it is pulling the gondola off the track. Good luck. Progress is looking good by the way.
@Silverstatetrains21 күн бұрын
No matter which car is behind the engine, the same thing happens. It must be engine related but I have watched it closely and cannot see anything wrong. I put new couplers on the engine and I may have screwed it up. I will have to mess with this engine some other time. Maybe even put in the other couplers. Thank you for the help and tips on this issue.

That's much better - still a decent bump but you're not going to be able to do much because you're transitioning from level to a 4% grade and that is crazy steep. if it's a little rough when you run your finger over the joint, you might want to try lightly filing it but i wouldn't go crazy with that because filing ultimately ruins the railhead by introducing micro scratches which trap dirt and grime. small areas at joints shouldn't be an issue, however.
@Silverstatetrains23 күн бұрын
Very good point. It honestly feels pretty good to the touch. Viably it appears to run better as well. I could try sanding the foam to make it a bit smoother but otherwise will just run trains and see how it goes. My Athearn engine will not be used on that line unless I get Athearn passenger cars which is unlikely. Thank you providing feedback.

This is just an issue of using non-fleixble track over a big grade change. The real solution here would be to mix in some flex track at the top and bottom of that grade to allow the track to smoothly bend over the change in grades. Another option could be to use two shorter curve pieces to allow that bend to be shared over a longer distance, or to basically do what you have here which is to add a section of less steep grade in between to give it a smoother transition. As long as none of your couples come apart, it looks good to me.
@Silverstatetrains10 күн бұрын
That is a good point. I did not think about flex track. Hopefully adding in a less steep grade will do the trick. I’m sure time will tell if I was successful or not soon enough.

Hi Silver State Trains . I had a couple of issues like that. I went on a sanding detail and it fixed my problem . I also us Kato unitrack I’m not going to glue my track down. When you are done ballast and other scenery you’re putting down a good amount of glue and it will run under the track. I learned this from another KZbin channel. He’s got a large double track layout and did not glue the track down. Just in case you haven’t checked the coupler height that could be an issue. Just make sure you enjoy and do it right the first time,so you don’t lose interest. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍
@stevetee5076Ай бұрын
It looks like the far rail on the right is slightly higher than the adjoining rail on the left so he might try running his finger along the track to see if this is correct. If so, filing the rail might work.
@Silverstatetrains24 күн бұрын
That is true. Once you add the glue to the ballast, it cloud half the track down too. I am planning on using a bit of caulking to half the track down but I am not going to go crazy with it though. Just enough. To hold it in place.
@Silverstatetrains24 күн бұрын
I saw that when I started. I think I got most of it out but will check again. I solved most of the problem with just reconnecting the track but there was still a good jump there. I need to run a few different trains and see how it goes there.
@roncrook8656Ай бұрын
You've certainly improved that hump. From the video, still looks like you've got a little bit of hump left right where the track sections join, but if running trains, you no longer have the uncoupling at that spot, then it looks you fixed it.

Yeah I got pretty close. Only thing else I can do is maybe try sanding it. Not sure if those transitions pieces hold up to sanding though. We shall see.

I’m glad you had some good listeners who paid attention and know their dcc programming. I never caught the error. By the way, before install, you might consider testing outside the loco first. That way you know you had a good, working decoder prior to install. You can buy or build a tester. I bought an ESU brand, but others exist.
@SilverstatetrainsАй бұрын
Yeah I got lucky there. It may have been a while before I caught that one. That is not a bad idea. I will have to look into that. Most of my installs have been easy enough that the work could be done over again. The Kato P42 I think it was that I soldiered it in though, is another story.
@irrationaltimer4901Ай бұрын
You need to take out some foam under that high spot. Sand it, Carve it, whatever it takes to remove that high spot. Remember go slow and test. When you see the trucks going thru there without that motion you showed us in the vid...success!

Don't sand the rails where you're having the disconnection issues. that joint is way too steep and you'll need to sand too much of the rail down to make a guaranteed difference. ease the grade there with the foam like you suggested - take it back towards the station as much as you can. you've got two things working against you - the grade and the curve will play havoc with the couplers if they're even slightly out of alignment. it'll be a bit of work but the results will be worth it.
@SilverstatetrainsАй бұрын
That is not a bad idea. I will need to pull the track and just play with the area. I will keep your suggestions in mind though as those are great tips! I will not sand the rails though as I agree with you. The foam is the issue. Thank you.

I think if you take a sanding block right where the track has a bump in the back corner, that may be enough to get the track to set flat. Probably need to do about 6' or so. Great to see the progress your making.
@stevetee5076Ай бұрын
Seems like the rails are not aligned. The one in the right is slightly higher. Perhaps switching out the rail joiner might work.

Yeah I will pull the track there and take a level to it to see how bad it is. That I will sand it to make the transition as good as I can.

I know your KZbin replies bans links, so I'll just have to say I got this off a model railroader site. "In the March 1979 Model Railroader Magazine, page 147, there was a discussion about calculating vertical curves, flat to constant grade or constant grade to flat. The length was identified as: %age grade change times a constant "K". K values are: 3.2 for N scale" So you'd need a transition of almost 3' to smooth out that change from flat to 4% Wonder whether the bent yardstick method can be used for horizontal transitions?
@Silverstatetrains14 күн бұрын
That is good information. I cut out a chunk of about 4 inches to smooth out the transition. Hopefully that will make a difference. This is what I get for again using 4%.

For your issue with your Athearn engine stalling at the peak of the 4% grade, have you checked if the fuel tank rubs the track at the transition joint? I had this issue with an Atlas GP40-2W engine. The fuel tank was slightly too low and it rubbed just enough to lift the body and lose the contact between the trucks and the body, making me lose power. Probably not your issue, but worth checking!
@SilverstatetrainsАй бұрын
I can check that out. I know I need to smooth out the transition there. My main problem is the coupler keep letting go. I will throw some attention to the spot here soon. I may add a 2% grade in front of it to help it out.
