Food for thought: Air Zimbabwe is so unsafe that their only crashes were in 1978 and 1979, when their planes were shot down by missiles; if not for those incidents for which they can't be blamed, they'd have a perfect flight record. They seem to possess a better track record than so many "safe" airlines.

It's not for lack of local demand that the airline is still going. It's the disparity between their economy, and the American/German economies where one might source a new aircraft - or even up-to-date parts. The cost of a new aircraft is significantly greater to that airline, simply because the seller's economy outmatches theirs. Now, if we could somehow produce safe, reliable aircraft within the economy, even just prop aircraft, we might get somewhere.

Shame! I used to fly Air Zimbabwe from Harare to London back in the early 90s on that 767 (200 ER). There were two 767s - Chimanimani and Vic Falls. Before that, the 707 serviced the route - via Athens, Greece. The 707 couldn't make a direct flight to London due to low fuel capacity. There was no inflight entertainment on the 707 - not even music. But there was on the 767, the same entertainment system which, it's sad to note, is no longer working. There was a communal screen at the front of each aisle and one movie was screened per night/flight. The airline was run down due to a succession of very corrupt leaders, one of whom - Peter Chikumba - is currently serving a jail sentence for an insurance scam which defrauded the airline. My father worked for that airline for 22 years.

The 707s did fly directly to London. I flew in them many times before the 767s arrived. The Athens flight did a stop in Larnaca. Zimbabwe is a beautiful country. Yes, it may have a lot of problems, but the people are friendly and probably very resourceful. The airports looked nicely designed and clean, and had some interesting local products to try. That 737 looked comfortable, and something to really think about, a regional flight on an airline in a poor country gives out free lunch and coffee. Find an airline in the "rich" countries that does that. I'd fly that airline...if I ever get the chance to go to Zimbabwe.

This brought back many happy memories for me regarding my time living in Bulawayo. I flew from London Gatwick to Harare and then a connection to Bulawayo. As we were landing in Bulawayo, the pilot cranked up the power for a fly around. He spoke on the intercom and informed us that landing had been postponed due to a donkey wandering on to the runway, it’s visible from the starboard side. And there was some ground crew trying to persuade the donkey to leave the runway. We circled twice and eventually landed ten or fifteen minutes later.
@davidlegeros19142 жыл бұрын
A go-around is a safe completion of an approach. This is a very common event in the congested and weather-ridden airspace of the USA. A professional crew always briefs the go-around/missed approach so it is never a surprise when we have to perform one.

I worked for Air Zim for over 9 yrs (till Dec.2001) maintaining the fleet's engines. What I would like to say to anybody who have qualms taking off in Air Zim aircrafts is this: their maintenance personnel are a notch above any you can find at any airline you can think of.

That's great.. l was reading on the website that Air Zimbabwe engineers were the first to perform strut improvement on these Boeings, and they were actually given some recognition by Boeing itself.

Interesting plane - so old but interesting to see when it was new Air Zim obviously were super proud when they first ordered it, having gone to all the trouble to get the custom decor and artwork on the cabin bulkheads and dividers. It's actually nice to see that it spent all the time with it's original owners too - so many others would have wound up with a minor operators and had some crappy upgrade to remove all the original features. It's like a little time capsule back into happier times for both the airline and her nation.

As a Zimbabwean, and from a purely economic point of view, I find it interesting that it's mostly black Zimbabweans flying between South Africa and Zimbabwe, and mostly white Zimbabweans flying between Harare and Bulawayo. There are lots of economic nuances there and I need to know what they are...Number of flights taken and the demographic of the people flying between routes are key economic indicators...could it be that black Zimbabweans are unnecessarily seeking economic opportunities further afield when they are right there in Zimbabwe??

The one thing I love about different people in Africa is how optimistic, positive and bright they are; full of life and happy with what they have. Meanwhile, we have people with 50x their salaries and 100x their facilities in developed countries in need of counselling, therapies and what not. Kudos to the Air Zimbabwean crew and all the people in this video for displaying their positive energy and happiness. Africa is beautiful.

I visited Zim for the first time just after ED took over. 5 weeks travelling around all over. I loved it and being Aussie it was different in almost every way to what I was use to. 10 out 10 for Air Zimbabwe. I knew I was in Africa. 10 out of 10 to the Zimbabwe people for making me feel so welcome. They all knew I was not African 😎 ( of course ) but I am going back very soon. The money exchange rate varies very quickly so just don't expect it may be 1.8. How wonderful to think Zimbabwe can rise again to hopefully somewhere where it once was. Time will tell. If your thinking about a holiday in Zim " do yourself a favour mate " go!

Of course Sam do want as many clicks as possible. I have experience of African airlines only Kenyan Airways and it was okay but I noticed at Dar Es Salaam airport parking plot that my flight has been changed to one leaving 1 hour 10 minutes earlier. Luckily I was there early enough. Well... in real life it left just 10 minutes earlier and soon there was announce "...after 12 minutes we are landing to Zanzibar..." Everything was okay but I was not flying to Zanzibar but to Kenya. I was not worrying, after Zanzibar we took direction to Kenya. Overall four flights with them and not big problems but nothing really good either. Just company taking you from point A to B without any luxury or extra. Ok, price was okay, specially comparing to Emirates but next time I pay a little bit extra and fly Emirates if they do have same route
