Did I misunderstand you or are you saying that even if it jumps time it won’t crash the valves?

Within reason, the vanos phasers can be fully maxed out in either direction without interference. Anything more than that can cause valve to piston interference but you’d really have to try to make that happen. Normally even when the cams are significantly out of time you can just line them back up and retime. Hope that answered your question! -Mike

I just acquired one of these from a family member that was told about the chain a while back and they just kept driving it till it wouldn’t start. I’m hopeful that I can just do the chain job on it and have it running again. They were told by a local shop it needed an engine, but they only did a visual inspection no leak down test or anything.

@@JMRAYMER if the chain assembly is all messed up a leak down will be very difficult. Your best approach would be to snake a borescope down into the spark plug holes and check out the valves or pop the intake manifold off and visually inspect the intake valves themselves. -Mike

@@JMRAYMER Did you ever find out if the valves were bent? I'm in the same situation, my son drove the N26 till it quit running and wouldn't start anymore. I started the chain replacement job, the guides were shreaded and the pieces were completely blocking the oil pick up. The intake timing is off by 6 teeth on the chain; I re-timed it according to the tool and am attempting to do a leak down, but I"m loosing pressure very quick, it might be the cheap tool I'm using not sealing properly. I'm not sure if I should continue with the chain replacement job or just give up and trash the engine. It the intake valves are still ok, I may just continue...
