N42/N46 Compress and remove valve spring without compressed air?

I've done this using the excellent compressor tool from bimmerzen, and soft nylon rope in the combustion chamber. Easy enough! I recommend starting with the piston about half way, stuffing as much rope as possible, then turning the crankshaft until you feel the piston stopping tight against the rope. Doesn't need to get all the way up to TDC. This way the valves didn't drop at all even with very worn seals.

I used a byline rope by putting it in the cylinder and turning the crank to compress it with piston that held the valve in place

Just get the basic N46 timing tools and do this job correctly. Not worth doing it any other way...

Isn't that a bit risky just to let the valvestemseals hold the valve ? What if it falls inside....?

I agree, this is just an experiment - I would not recommend this to somebody doing this job for the first time. Piston must be at the TDC to prevent the valve from falling in to the cylinder. In TDC, you can still get the valve up with strong magnet or carefuly with pliers.

my ccv keeps clogging, i think occ can alleviate that, but i can't find any detail information about installing occ on a n46

@@erichu9462 If it keeps clogging then I would suspect something else is wrong... Did you check all the hoses going to the CCV? Sometimes the upper hose that is connected to the intake manifold gets clogged and/or collapses and that prevents proper vacuum to be applied. It's also possible that the drain hose that leads back to the oil dipstick tube and oil pan is clogged. I've never seen or heard of an OCC on an N42/N46:)

did you check if your chain rail guide is broken? you can remove the oil filler cap and try to move the plastic rail from side to side:kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3-6mJqPacSdZrs note: moving front to back is normal, side to side not.

It turns out that the n42 engine is a collision and I've read many posts about it not a collision, but I see that the pistons can hit the valves.

When the valves are released, they can drop all the way down and touch the pistons. Otherwise they can only open (drop) as much as the camshaft lobes allow them.

Unsure about that, I had timing compoments removed, spun the engine,but nothing was binding, camshafts were still in
