I guess it kinda makes sense, as the amount of people learning Japanese at any given time is probably tremendously lower compared to most other things. - I have a question for you Andy. I'm combining your series with learning through Lingodeer's Japanese program. From their examples, and several other sources, I've heard the O *particle* pronounced as such, and not "wo", yet I think I heard you pronounce it as "wo" several times. Is it "o" or "wo" when being used as a particle? :S Sorry if this came up in a previous lesson and I just forgot it.

If he pronounces it as "wo," it is probably just stylistic or a mistake. You will hear it pronounced as wo often in songs or media just to stylize it but in conversation, it is pronounced "o."

Thanks! Considering I've only been doing this for 1 year, I'm actually quite satisfied with the level of exposure this channel is getting! I do hope it continues to grow though! =) を is often pronounced similar to "wo" for emphasis. If you REALLY want to emphasis the direct object, you can say it this way. I pronounce it this way to emphasis that it is the を particle I am using, as this is easier for learners to hear. Many Japanese teachers will do this. In actually conversation I don't pronounce it this way unless someone didn't hear me correctly and I want to emphasis the direct object of my action to someone. I hope that helps!

@@skewminds3756 People will definitely understand you, but your accent will stand out from repeated usage, I think it's just best to work on it now when it's easier, since you're a beginner, than have a bad habit that's hard to get rid of in the future.

@@tjc_2661 I've almost exclusively been memorizing kanji and vocab and completely ignoring grammar until the start of this year, so yeah, I didn't touch Genki at all. Thankfully grammar turned out to be MUCH MUCH easier to learn than vocab.

Hi Andy and thanks for the content again. I'm french and half spanish and when you say ほら means look in spanish, I might be wrong (spanish is a second langage) but look in spanish is "mira", plus hora with ressembles "hola" wich means "hi" or "ola" wich means "wave" (like in stadiums during soccer games, or in the see)

First off: many thanks for these great lessons - you're doing all those who always wanted to learn Japanese, but don't live in big cities with communities of (native) Japanese speakers and are having a hard time pushing through all this material on their own, a great service. Also, being a (computer science) teacher myself, I can only imagine how much work it is, to prepare all those slides and lesson materials on a (bi-)weekly basis … much appreciated! With regards to the presented location words, I have a question though. The presented example sentences were 18:00 クーラーはどこですか。 18:06 バーベキューのとなりです。 Seeing that the words クーラー and バーベキュー are not of the same object category … wouldn't it be more natural to use よこ (instead of となり) in this case?

I just got a comment from a native Japanese teacher asking if Genki got rid of that footnote about となり and よこ because she has never heard of such a distinction, and no Japanese native she's ever asked has heard of this distinction. She tells her students to ignore that footnote. I'm inclined to do the same. Hope that helps!

@@ToKiniAndy Thank you for this clarification. Well, no textbook is perfect. As a teacher, I'm also quite used to having to explain to my students that some parts of the textbooks we're using aren't worked out very well. Nonetheless, while I personally prefer the Minna no Nihongo series, I think that Genki does a pretty good job on providing an introduction to basic Japanese.

the difference between くらい and ぐらい there used to be rules around when you would use one or the other but now there aren't to native speakers ぐらい feels more colloquial and くらい feels more formal, くらい feels more appropriate for written language while ぐらい feels more appropriate for the speaking when くらい is written you can pronounce it/say it as ぐらい

You used the past-tense form of “to speak” (spoke) in two different ways (はなしました for the Godan verb and しゃべりました for the ichidan verb). Would you mind elaborating on why there are two verbs both meaning “to speak” and when it’s more appropriate to use which verb? I tried looking up the answer in Genki but I don’t believe the book uses the latter. Thank you for always answering our questions.

These two words are quite difficult to distinguish, even for natives. I'd say that the main difference is that しゃべる is a bit less formal than はなす. I've also noticed that there seems to be somewhat of a regional difference in usage. For the most part though, they have the same meaning.

I'm going insane here. In the lessen at 12:44 "the picture is on the desk".....the no particle is between desk and on. On is a preposition in this case and is never a noun in any case. I'm just trying to understand why the no particle was used like instead of maybe the de particle or maybe the ni particle. Although de is for action right? but ni would be the location. I have a question about your dialogue in the quantity segment, the line 「ね、隣の家でもバーベキュー。。。」, I noticed that も is in there despite nobody else having held a barbeque, is that just in reference to there being a barbeque at A's house, or is it being used like too in English where you're like suggesting something that might be relevant? I know these videos are a few years old now but thanks all the same! I'm trying to really get into studying Japanese especially around verb conjugation and these are helping tremendously! A little fun rhyme I learnt when learning when to use ふん or ぷん when trying to figure out how to pronounce the minutes: 2,5,7,9 is fun everything else is pun. So if the last number you pronounce is 二、五、七 or 九 then you pronounce 分 as fun.

In the example question どこにありますか, I remember that に and で are particles for direction. Can the particle で be used interchangeably with this question? Like どこでありますか
