Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the Ulnar Nerve Anatomy - Cubital Tunnel Syndrome.
The ulnar nerve originates from the C8-T1 nerve roots which form the medial cord of the brachial plexus.
The ulnar nerve runs down the arm where it passes behind the medial epicondyle of the humerus at the elbow is.
The Ulnar nerve does not give branches in the axilla or in the upper arm.
It starts giving muscular and cutaneous branches in the upper forearm and hand.
After the ulnar nerve passes behind the medial epicondyle, it enters the forearm between the two heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle.
As the ulnar nerve passes behind the medial epicondyle, it may become compressed or irritated.
The ulnar nerve travels through a tunnel of tissue (cubital tunnel) that runs under the medial epicondyle.
Pressure on the nerve at the elbow can cause numbness or pain in the elbow, hand, wrist or fingers.
In the case of the Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow: we notice Tinnel’s sign which is:
- a tapping technique performed to test for symptoms of ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow(cubital tunnel syndrome).
- Tapping on the nerve causes electric shock, tingling and numbness in the medial two fingers much like when hitting the funny bone.
The nerve gives branches to the flexor carpi ulnaris and the medial half of the flexor digitarum profundus.
The ulnar nerve travels alongside the ulna bone of the forearm into the wrist.
As the nerve descends into the forearm, it stays medially above the flexor digitarum profundus and under the flexor carpi ulnaris, giving branches to those muscles.
In the lower part of the forearm the ulnar nerve lies lateral to the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle and medial to the ulnar artery.
The ulnar nerve enters the palm of the hand through the Guyon’s canal.
The nerve and artery pass superficial to the flexor retinaculum.
At the wrist, the Ulnar nerve lies just lateral to the pisiform bone.
The superficial branch of the ulnar nerve that supplies and passes under the palmaris brevis muscle and divides into palmar digital nerves.
The deep branch of the ulnar nerve innervates the three hypothenar muscles, the medial two lumbricals, the seven introssei, the adductor policis and the deep head of the flexor pollicis brevis.
It supplies all intrinsic hand muscles which lie medial to the flexor pollicis longus except the lateral two lumbricals(Median nerve).
The deep branch of the ulnar nerve innervates:
- Opponens Digiti Minimi.
- Flexor Digiti Minimi.
- Abductor Digiti Minimi.
- Third and Fourth Lumbricals.
- Palmar and Dorsal Interossei.
- Adductor Pollicies.
- The deep head of Flexor Pollicis Brevis.
The ulnar nerve provides palmar and dorsal sensory innervation to the little finger and half of the ring finger.

THank you for taking the time to publish this video. I’ve been suffering from Carpal & CUBITAL Tunnel Syndrome for some years now but for the last 6-8 months it has gotten worse that I had no choice but to go ahead with the CTS release surgery. I had this about 6 weeks ago and still in recovery. I must say I can/t see much difference in my left hand at the moment but the surgeon tells me it could take some time (sometimes even a year or so as my condition was rather worse due to suffering from this condition for more than 2yrs and nerves may have been damaged a lot and also strong pain killers I’ve been taking for my chronic lower back pain restrained me from the early diagnosis as i did not feel much pain to complain until it got worse! But the pain on my left elbow (mainly upper part of my forearm to ring & small finger) is excruciating. I can’t even bend my elope properly without experiencing any pain. In fact, i have constant debilitating pain. I can feel it it’s the nerve from the type of pain it is. I do expertises my Physio advised me but this doesn’t help. Even with lot’s of strong pain killers are not helping. But my question is that I thought with Cubital TS the pain should be outer part of my elbow ‘ forearm ? But my pain is on the inner part (meaning the forearm that I can see and not underneath section ) why is that please ? Do you think this is normal for somebody like myself been diagnosed with both Carpal & Cubital Tunnel Syndrome for both hands through a nerve conduction test last September 2021)

Q: Why aren't orthopedic or neurosurgeons addressing double & triple crush syndrome w/ their patients or the public? I've been diagnosed w/ both. Also, I have to see 4 different specialists for a problem that is linked together: I have (1) cervical radiculopathy at C5-T1 due to DDD, DJD, fibrosis, & a long history of accidents; (2) bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome; & (3) bilateral cubital tunnel syndrome. At the same time, I suffer from severe fibromyalgia, mild OA, & diabetes Type 2 (A1C 5.7-6.3). I'm told that if I fix one of the above, then I need to fix them all at the same time (one arm at a time). So, they will do spine surgery, & carpal & cubital releases in the same surgery. This seems like a lot to deal w/ at one time. I don't find this surgical setup discussed on the internet & would like sources, esp. regarding complications & post-surgical routine. So, I have a spine specialist, a shoulder specialist, a hand specialist, & a pain specialist. The first 3 are in the same large orthopedic clinic & orthopedic hospital. I have to make an appointment to see each one again, then wait until they all talk with each other, & then I come back & talk with each one of them again for pre-op consultation. What to do? (sigh)

Hi Dr. Im convinced after watching this video that I have cubital tunnel syndrome..one question I have is along with all the symptoms you covered I also have a lot of swelling from top of elbow down to the middle of my forearm.& and extreme pain. & I do mean EXTREME..i have pretty high tolerance for pain but this pain is ridiculous..the back of my elbow protrudes out and is very painful... I have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy but am only experiencing symptoms in my feet...the swelling is extreme as well.. My left arm is almost double the size of my right arm around elbow and half way down my forearm.. The pain is so bad I cannot lift my arm at all let alone being able to do the stretching you recommend. I CANT move my arm at all without horrible pain... Im waiting for my insurance to kick in a7t my new job before I can go to a dr. And advice you can offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Dr.

Is there anyway I can make an appointment with you? I've had elbow pain for years and nobody can figure out why. I've never done a nerve conduction study though..
