I started getting cold sores since I was 5. I had to have got it from school because no one in my family gets them. They thought I got bit by a spider for a long time. Thank you for this video. I don't get them often anymore, but when I do I just want to stay inside my house.

I have not heard of using heat for cold sores. Heat helps it get bigger. Please try icing it at first onset and throughout. You may be pleasantly surprised at the decrease in severity and length of time. Another word for cold sore is "fever blisters". Icing it prevents the spread of the effected area. It really does work. If it doesn't work for you, you're not out anything, so give it a try :-)

once fully formed try tea tree organic oil for the first two days. Apply with qtips constantly. Then at night boil green tea or any other, grab the tea bag place it on a dry and clean paper towel and apply it as hot as you can handle for about 15 seconds directly to the cold sore. Twice at night only, every night. Then, you should be at the scabbing stages. Then continue with constant tea tree oil with clean qtips dabbing very gently. Then once dryed out, heal your lip with a baby cream called Aquaphor advance therapy. Once you know you can remove the scab, gently remove it with a clean wash cloth. If not ready by constantly applying the baby cream then leave it alone. Third day, you should look much better. Plus try everything else she said. The Lysine, the pills 💊, the spf 🧴 for lips 👄. Lol My first time trying it and it’s helped me heal in 3 days. Omg 😱.

I take a l-lysine tablet everyday and since I've been taking it I have not had a single breakout or even an hint of one. It's fantastic as I was getting cold sores on a monthly basis. Been on the l-lysine for nearly 2 years now. and it's very well priced from Just Vitamins.

My brother started getting cold sores very young. He caught them drinking out of the taps at school.. He got them real bad too. My nana told him to dab some perfume on them as soon as he feels one coming on. He never had a full break out after using our mothers expensive perfume, every time he felt one coming.. I swear it worked for him.. I do recommend you all try simple perfume on the sores.. Saves you lots of money and will disappear in 24 hours..

I have ALWAYS had Cold Sores - I think my Mum - bless her - would kiss us when she had them - but in the 60's this would not have been known. I am lucky not to have had for a couple of years (touching all wood here). We used to dry them out with Perfume dabbed on - seemed to dry them out but nothing stops them coming. My poor Mum who is 82, last year had one from her nose to mouth and was mortified and said she felt really dirty and that everyone one was looking at her - something I think all us sufferers feel.

Am glad I can get them online, shall try that soon as have just got another one... on my nose! Yes! My nose! They were always on my lips but now have migrated to my nose. 😬 thanks again Nadine and fantastic channel! 😊😊

I started getting cold sores in my early twenties. Many years ago I got one and headed to the drug store to find something to get rid of it, and found Zilactin-L. OMG, it cleared my cold up so fast! I used to get a cold sore once or twice a year, but since using Zilactin-L I hardly ever get one now. It's amazing stuff! I needed to replace my little bottle of Zilactin-L and found it discontinued. I can get Zilactin gel so I use that at the very first feeling that I might be getting a cold sore, and that usually kills it straight-away. If I don't use it right when I get that little tingly feeling or first sign of a bump I'll get the full blown cold sore, but the Zilactin heals it pretty quick. Rarely do I have one last more than a week.

Thank you Nadine for the information which is useful. I am 58 years old and have suffered only the beginnings of a cold sore since my 20's. However, they have never gotten to the puss or scabby stage as whenever I feel that tingle I go for Alcohol (of any kind) whiskey, brandy, sanitizer, etc. and rub on the area. Lemon juice or apple cider vinegar can be used in an emergency This will prevent the sore from developing and in my case in 99.99% of the time. I suffer them very infrequently. This year in early May I went to India to have dental work done and I had chapped lips which I had to deal with. I searched for one of those small tubs of Vaseline but could not find one. I instead got a lip balm in the lipstick type container. The chemist, come shop, rummaged around in a box and pulled out this lip balm. It was not sealed. I, however, used it thinking the best of things. This brought on a cold sore, (maybe because it was previously used by the shop owner) just before I had dental implant surgery the next day. This time the alcohol nor anything else seemed to do the trick. I used topical creams, which again did no good. However, the outbreak was not severe nor puss filled. It, however, has stayed with me as a reddish mark on my lower lip until now, July13th. I have used the tablets at a rate of 2 x 400Mg a day for over a week to no avail. I am now trying a suggested ice 'cure' and don't know how that will work out, however, any other suggestions would be welcome. I am looking at the Virulite product which is FDA approved but it seems quite expensive and hard to get!

This is completely anecdotal but I went keto a year ago to treat migraines (it's working!) but a side bonus that never even occurred to me is that I also no longer get my quarterly cold sore. I haven't had a single one in the past year. However, I don't know if it's in the UK but I have a prescription for Denavir, if it's applied at first tingle it can either stop the thing in it's tracks or significantly reduce the size/lifespan of it. My dentist had prescribed it for me.

My first memory is having so many fever blisters that I couldn't eat. And I used to get them at least 6 times a year, every year So I've tried everything. I have backups of the acyclovir tablets and when I start to get a craving for nuts (full of arginine, the amino acid that opposes L-lysine), I take the acyclovir tablets for a day. It's working so far.

I use Blistex relief cream - it has to be the one in the metal tube, the one in the plastic tube is rubbish. I use it with my morning and evening skincare routine and then during the day if my lips feel dry. This has kept me practically cold sore free (touch wood!) for about 7yrs (prob only had one in that time) you have to keep up with applying it every day though regardless.

I’ve had cold sores since I was about 6, I also have eczema so I use quite a strong steroid cream for my bad flare ups and I know I shouldn’t use them on my face, but the steroid cream applied thinly and regularly will make even a fully developed cold sore completely disappear within about 3 days, if I apply it at the first tingle they don’t develop, it’s been my saving grace for many years, but will definitely be getting an online prescription of this when I next feel a tingle as I do suffer from them a few times a year

Actually steroids make the skin more vulnerable and prone to infections, including viral ones, so you should not use steroid creams on cold sores, even if it does help momentarily, it will only aggravate the issue on the long term. Besides that, steroid creams can lead to your skin developing acne, rosacea, eczema, as they destroy the skin barrier (and once it's been damaged, it is extremely difficult to restore it, and I say this from experience, unfortunately).

Boots do a little glass bottle of cold sore lotion. It's only about 3 quid. Just dab on with your finger or a cotton wool pad as soon as you get one and do it as often as you can. It stings like hell for a second or two but keep dabbing and it stops. So do that as often as you remember to. It heals and drys everything up super quick. I swear by it. I have the little bottles in every bag and cupboard. My daughter uses it too x

I got mine from my first husband. Funnily enough my second husband has never caught the virus from me !! When we lived in France my doctor there first gave me Acylovir tablets but usually the colds sore starts ( in the night for instance)and once it has started the drug doesn't work. Tea Tree or True Melisa Essential Oils will help to take to heat out of the first blister (they are highly, naturally antiseptic) and often reduces the blister. But after that it is just time !!! Boots used to sell their own version for a really decent price but have discontinued them :( I use it preventatively every couple of weeks (my cold sore always appears on the same spot). I will definitely look into the tablets though, I get them once a year and it would be bliss if I would only get them every 5 years).

And now I can add another trigger: watching a youtube video about cold sores and then thinking about them. Woke up with the tingle. Tablets ordered!

I’ve had them for years and have tried a million different things to make them go away quicker, including most of the ones you mentioned here. I can swear that Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant mask helps mine dry faster. I don’t know which ingredient in it does the trick, but it does. I also use the transparent plasters to cover and avoid contamination. And if I manage to stick them really well and with no creases, sometimes I can even wear lipstick (matte and long stay) on top.

I have been using Valacyclovir 500 mg for quite a few years. I take it at the first sign of tingling & it normally will stop it from going any further or getting too far out if hand. Yes it is a prescription. Thank you for sharing Nadine.

Have you used A Vogel Bio-Propolis Ointment ? It's the only thing I've used that I've felt works to stop the tingle in its tracks. I feel once the breakout takes hold it's also helpful but I've no proof on that one. It's incredibly moisturizing and eases pain more than anything. I also try (it's tiny so I tend to lose it and then it's hard to find in shops) to use it as a lip balm regularly and I suspect that keeps further breakouts at bay.

Thank you for such a brilliant video; I’ve never managed to stop or curtail a cold sore, but do manage to speed up the revolting ‘goo’ stage by dabbing many times a day with antiseptic sterile powder on the end of a clean cotton bud, especially after drinking, eating or teeth cleaning; this prevents the cold sore remaining as lump of sodden evo stick on your lip for the next few hours. Do always use a clean cotton bud each time & decant the powder into a puffer or shaker bottle if it’s not already in one, so you don’t run the risk of double dipping.

Thanks for the information. My go too is Carmex chapstick. Whenever I get one I use the carmex all the time. The cold sore usually dries up in two day. I am guessing the menthol in the carmex works for me.

Carmex (the stick) works wonders for me too... I've suffered from cold sores for years and would get them every two months. Tried medicine but it never worked but Carmex does... It's the BEST! and if you use Carmex early on, it will even prevent the bladders from forming...

Decades ago my dad taught me a trick for cold sores that would get rid of them in days and that simply was to take pure riboflavin. Take it right away and it would go right away. I'm not even sure you can purchase straight riboflavin anymore but it always worked and I never forgot that. I never get them anymore thankfully so I don't know if you can still get it.

pinkiestwoodsy once fully formed try tea tree organic oil for the first two days. Lol

In the USA people us Abreva for cold sores and claims it works pretty good. When it first came on the market years ago, it was by prescription only, but now it's over the counter, and price range is around $15. according to Amazon.

I use Abreva and it works great for me. Numbs the pain and speeds up the healing. If I get it early I can get rid of it before a disgusting scab develops, usually within 3-4 days. I disagree about letting it dry out. Wounds on the body like to stay moist to heal. That is why we have bandages. IMO and experience, of course.

@@michellesparks1590 So much trial and error. I never thought about the drying vs keeping it moist. I'll have to try moist next time because 3-4 days is very short.

Hey Nadine, first and foremost, thank you for the great video content. A week ago or so I noticed that I was beginning to get some type of sore. After watching your video I've come to the realization that it is in fact a cold sore. To my misfortune, they seem to be spreading a bit. I attempted to purchase the Aciclovir tablets from The Superdrug and was unable to place the order. It seems to be an issue with the Postcode. It makes me wonder if its because i live in the US. Do you know if they're sold online anywhere in the US? Thank you in advance!

I'm so angry that Boots discontinued their cold sore machine which is the same as the original Virulite machine. So angry I could write in caps. I discovered it years ago when Sali Hughes wrote about it and did a video here on KZbin. The Boots version was around £35 unfortunately the Virulite one is anywhere between £70-£90. The thing is even at that the more expensive price I would pay that again, because it works. It is different from the acne pens in that it has a wide opening and it could quite comfortably fit over your top or bottom lip (of course lip size varies so it may not be the case) and all you do is press a button hold it in place and then it beeps when it's time to remove. It dries out the cold sore and halves your healing time, also stops you feeling that flu-ey feeling. I've had cold sores since my childhood and that little machine was a game changer. Whenever I start feeling a little run down I have session just in case I've triggered the virus but I also use it a couple of times a month for maintenance. It is quite simply a brilliant product. Thanks so much for this video and ones like this-the tablets were a revelation for me and I've now discovered I can buy them here in Sweden, alas on prescription but they are available! Hurrah!

Nadine, I have a question and I am not sure that you would know. I am 39 years old and I had chicken pox when I was 11. That is a form of herpes. I have never had a cold sore in my life. However I have had problems with my left eye. So I went to a Opthalmologist and was diagnosed with cold sore of the eye. So what could cause that? And what other things can I put in my eye to help pain, or shorten the infection.? My Dr prescribed me Acyclovir. I have to take 800mg every day for the rest of my life, so I don't lose my eyesight in my left eye. Please let me know if you can find out anything about it. I live in the US and I know the UK might have better Drs than we do. Thank you so much for this video. 🤗

Heather Palmer it sounds like you have a reactivation of the shingles virus in your retinal nerve, as it can lie dormant in your body virtually forever or can be reactivated by unknown factors. The herpes virus is essentially what causes chicken pox. I urge you not to rely on online advice, but to discuss options for treating pain and outcomes with your doctor.

For me, the coldsore plasters are really helpful, they take all the pain away and I am sure the sore heals faster. However, I get them in my right nostril now and I can't put a plaster up there. It's like the virus is saying to me, you will suffer! I also don't get the tingle to warn me I'm about to get one, so not sure the tablets would work for me.
