Not really, fact checking helps too. They won't care and would usually leave threads they were fact checked or called out in, but at the very least it will help others who are not that well-informed with the topics. They're the ones that they target, since it's usually harder to convince someone who was being fooled and would help whatever their agendas are by echoing their fake news and misinformation (which in turn spreads more misinformation to other individuals). Look up those reports like those from ISC (Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament), effects of these troll farms are not to be underestimated.

KZbin comment sections have rarely been worthwhile but nowadays it's completely impossible to get any kind of discussion going. I reckon it might be by design.

The main issue is non-guaranteed visibility, and lack of referencing (which requires tooling). For example, things that might "look" like a url, can be auto-moderated away (so you'll need to ping your comment to ensure it gets posted). Users can also self-delete comments, which will require you to quote them for context. There's also different levels of ownership in the API with regards to being the individual creating the comment versus replying to a comment.

There has to be push back, and not in a pleading or whining sort of way. When you comment often they use a variety of tactics including what they consider to be psychological manipulation to put you on the defensive. Don't fall for it.
