My cats have been very well fed their entire lives (they are the kittens of one of our other cats, so we have had the kittens since day1) and it’s been 9 years with them, they are probably some of the fattest cats, yet they cry just like this for food and for treats 🤣 they know how to work the system 😜🤣 (they are not 20lbs cats tho! I'll never forget my own cats first surgery to remove a huge splinter from his neck... He was brought in, and everything went fine, but he was completely out of it when we got home! He seemed fine, but we opted to keep an eye on him, as he was a bit unsteady, but could still walk and jump just fine... That's until he wanted to get down from the table, and instead of jumping down like normal, he pretty much just plopped head first into the carpet... He was completely fine, but we clearly underestimated just how sedated he still was!

My idiot flame point siamese Axel JUMPED ONTO THE STOVE WHILE IT WAS STILL ON and I didn't realize he had burned his paw until I smelt that kind of burnt singed smell. And even then I was freaking out because he had singed his paw pad, the vet gave me antibiotics for him just in case, and the whole time Axel was just like "bruh what's the big deal?" I know this is 5 months late, but I figured I’d drop in any way... my dad is a veterinarian and he always recommends that young cats (like Nagi, Haku, and Poki) eat oral care food, such as Hill’s. It cleans their teeth as they eat because it’s very large kibbles and they need to sink their teeth into it to chew it more than other foods. This way you wouldn’t need to brush their teeth every day because the food does it for you. You guys are AMAZING pet parents, just thought (on the off chance you see this comment) it might make your life easier and your kitties teeth healthier! ❤️❤️

Most cats who are trained as kittens accept tooth brushing. Even if it's grudgingly in some cases. He doesn't. Other cat, gorgeous, just hates them and I'm lucky she trusts me enough to administer medicine but for whatever reason stays away from tooth brush like it's a vaccume. Probably a story there. Too bad she's never been able to tell me what it is. She was like that when I got her from a shelter when she was a couple years old.

Yeah it's pretty huge, it's about 0,2% according to the most well-conducted retrospective studies (if we were to compare it to the risk for humans to die during anesthesia, it's 1000 times higher), BUT these studies include a very large panel of cats : young healthy cats like Nagi but also old cats, cats affected by various diseases, some who need emergency surgery... So the risk for a young healthy cat like Nagi is wayyyyy lower than 0,2%, especially if they analyze a blood sample beforehand. Sadly, Rachel's family cat was a senior cat when he got a surgery so it was way more likely to happen. Nowadays, new safer molecules (such as alfaxalon) are used on old cats or cats with a cardiac disease if they need surgery, the risk is still higher than it would be for a young cat, but it did get better. And it will keep improving, so don't worry (or worry, after all they are our little fluffy babies, we can't help but worry). Hope you're a bit reassured :)

I grew up with one who was distant and pretty mean and didn't really know anyone else with cats so didn't know much about them. I just wanted to weigh in on the vet statistics. I'm in Canada, in the 10 years I was in clinics from emergency to GP to exotics I only ever saw two pets die because of the anesthesia. So I hope people will know how uncommon it is nowadays :)

On an older cat a quick cap would have probably been easier on the kitty but honestly a single tooth removal isn't really all that big of a deal. I've seen 13 year old cats have over half their dentition removed and recover well and with "kitten-like" spunk :)

I wanted to get into veterinary services and man, anesthesia is the only thing I've ever been worried about. Even for people, anesthesia seems to be a risky situation!! But, do they simply use less anesthesia these days compared to older days? I've always wondered if that may play into the role of less incidents these days

This is surprisingly common, but not often mentioned, so many people don't know. Do always visit a qualified veterinarian, because there can even be other, even more obscure, issues. My cat Fiona chipped a tooth just like Nagi, but the vet found that Fiona has a congenital condition which causes his gums to dissolve the roots of their teeth, thought to be by their bodies mistaking the teeth as foreign objects (like splinters, thorns, etc that can get embedded in tissue) and attacking the part of the tooth that is within the soft gum tissue. We had to extract 5 additional teeth, and he likely will need more removed as he ages (he was diagnosed with FORL at only 3 years old). While it is indeed very important to take care of plaque at home with brushing, there can be other dental issues that you won't notice or could mistake for odd/bad behavior, so you must always have a yearly visit to check on overall health, including teeth. We didn't notice his teeth were getting loose, and because FORL is obscure, we didn't realize why Fiona was chewing on things (table legs, pencils, anything he could use for teething). W just thought he was a trouble maker. In hind sight it makes sense that his teeth were getting loose and bothering him, so naturally, since he doesn't have fingers, he would chew on things like a child wiggles a loose baby tooth to make it come out. Indeed, once the loose teeth were removed, his teething ceased and he became very affectionate.

Poor Nagi! My cat had a really bad infection in her mouth when we got her from the shelter. Basically, antibiotics didn't work and we had to remove most of her teeth. She only has her canines left and a couple little teeth in the front, but all the other teeth are gone. She eats like a monster though hahaha We make sure to give her small pieces of food because she can't really chew as well as a normal cat. She doesn't have any issues with food other than that. A happy cat overall :)

If she can’t eat dry food too well, and you can’t feed wet food all the time for whatever reason, try adding a bit of warm water to the dry food to soften it. Not every cat will take to it though, so try with a small quantity at first.
