you should also notice the when he was going slow he was lifting his feet, more old traditional, you see student do it but they dont know why, its to show the transfer of weight. its again a training tool, dont get stuck in just one way, when he show the faster version the feet are closer to the ground and he is transferring his weight into the next move.... so when you practice, go slow, make big moves then whittle them down as you go faster

I have read his report about karate. He explains kata should evolve according to his/her progression. He compares kata to handwriting. The 1st rigid way is square style. This form is what we normally see and 1st we learn at school. The 2nd is semi cursive style(what he is dong in this video clip at full speed). We can still read it as naihanchi. Lastly, it's a cursive style and it's somewhat hard to imagine what the original form looks like. He says in the report, kata can finally be accessed only if it's at semi-cursive level or higher. When you write your name in cursive style the letters maybe all connected. And your handwriting may look different from others. But he says it's OK as long as you have gone through the square style then semi cursive style.

@karatekid68 Actually, that is easily the most sophisticated use of pelvic rotation and hip movement I have seen. Not only is it NOT wrong, it is very very advanced. Of course, if you want to post a video of you doing the kata the "right" way, I'd love to see it. In any event, it is very far from wrong indeed.

I noticed this as well. There is the horizontal pelvic rotation which similar to what you guys do, but there is also the "internal" vertical rotation. This struck me as the most sophisticated koshi use I've ever seen. Shinzato shinshi's speed and power strongly reinforce this impression.

@uminchu7th That is what is called advanced timing. If you noticed, he did it both times that he did the kata fast, but not slow. This is a sign that this is a Sensei with a higher understanding of the kata.

Very informative! Naha te considers Sanchin to be the essence of Karate, while Shuri te considers Naihanchi. In this terrific demonstration the use of the tanden shows the unifying element in both traditions. Sensei is very generous in his revelation."The good student needs only one corner to know a triangle." Thanks for the post.

@uminchu7th , this is the understanding of 'zen-dachi'. Stances are merely transitional as they vehicle the techniques of karate. When executed in proper katamari bunkai, hand and foot will often blend in the unison of execution.

Ummm, I've been doing Shotokan for 37 years and have never trained in another style. His hip movement is NOT wrong, just so very advanced that it's difficult to understand. This video is worth studying. Also, any Shotokan student would benefit from checking out how the Matsubayashi Ryu people move.

Naihanchi footwork is subtle but very powerful and advanced footwork, once one understands its application. Different schools teach different versions of naihanchi, but the footwork is superior to many systems and other katas, even within karate. I have some opinion on this shown version,but that is irrelevant. The naihanchi step-across gives great defense and positioning against a variety of offensive moves.

@uminchu7th ; diffidently did not "goofed" you should be able to practice it both ways... dont think of a kata as "you can only do one way and that the only way", the kata is a tool, the technique is with in. a block may be a strike and a strike may be a block, not one rule applies, never limit your self to one technique

It's called screwing up because of he camera. If he was going the tempo he naturally does it, he 'd have done it correctly. Enough of the yakity yak, I've lived in Okinawa over 30 yrs and seen masters make these little errors consistently, it comes with age. Everyone goofs, everyone is human. Look at him on 2:38, he almost forgot the next move. He is one of the highest skilled shorin ryu men I know, but a camera in your face can mess you up guys.. stop "godifying" the masters, they're human.

So what? If you just evaluated his technique based on whether he perfectly followed the pattern, as if this were a dance routine, there minus "points", then you've entirely missed the point. The man's body mechanics are off the charts.
@evangodbee2425

He is demonstrating that the kata can be interpreted and performed in different ways. The purpose of the kata after all is to teach us applications for combat, not for rigid performance of a pattern
@KOTR2003
@KOTR2003 8 жыл бұрын
Evan Godbee The point of a kata is to do it in order. Deductions would be made in a competitive environment if you do them out of order.
@evangodbee2425
@evangodbee2425 8 жыл бұрын
+KOTR2003 um this is not a competitive environment, it's a demonstration at a karate dojo. And no the point of kata is not simply to do the techniques in order. That is a very low level understanding of karate. The point of kata is that it contains a plethora of combat skills. One who has studied for years realises that in application they need not always be performed exactly as they are in traditional kata. It's techniques for combat, not a robot dance
@KOTR2003
@KOTR2003 8 жыл бұрын
Evan Godbee But for a teaching resource you need to give proper information. With your logic a school teacher can give misinformation and still be doing their job properly.

@Shoreihito I have heard of advanced timing, but never heard of katamari bunkai. Is this an Okinawan concept? If and when you chose to answer, I would rather do this to my comments board as oppose to the more public forum.

I know your comment is 12 years old, but that is not a goof. That is the result of knowing the way kata is done out of the public eye. If any goof, it would be doing that rhythm in public, on camera. I'ts likened to how Oyata Sensei's senior most students do Naihanchi, in example - Peter Polander's video Naihanchi.
