I had seen tis from a Swedish site, wanted to show it to a friend and student and thankfully you put it here. People may not realize that the metal they ware working with is some of the softest iron ever made and could be worked from a white heat to cold. It was, of course, called Swedish iron in this country. Also made in Norway and Russia, no one makes it any longer.

+Bob Patrick Look up pure iron, or wrought iron. Still made.

Hi. Hadn't been to the sie for some time. Having worked with all 3 metals, the Swedish charcoal iron ceased to be made in the 1960's, as did wrought iron. Pure iron is electro-chemically prepared and is very soft, but a little different than the Swedish iron. To the best of my knowledge, wrought iron available in new bars today is repuddled old iron from Great Britain or salvaged iron, and has distributed siliceous slag distributed through it. The wrought iron was manufactured using coke made from coal and behaves differently than the Swedish iron, which can be worked until cold. Wrought iron does not behave well below a red heat. While perhaps not the best expert on hand forging nails I have made 10's of thousands of them. The Colonial Williamsburg, Inc. smiths may be the top experts on making them

Watching him making the nails. Is this the reason why old nails I might find have a flat tip?
